Title: The Troll King presents: The Explorer Series
Post by: miltonyorkcastle on December 11, 2008, 11:36:39 am
I'm introducing a new series for the rest of this month and the next month (and maybe longer) that highlights the dungeons of Layo, and especially the new content. Primarily, the purpose for the series is to allow for those that have yet been unable or simply won't be able to explore the various dungeons/adventure areas due to time constraints, since many of the dungeon areas require a significant time committment to visit.

This series is.....

.... regular adventuring but with added GM spice/help/porting in and out.
.... an effort to give our casual/family gamers who have a hard time committing five+ hours to adventuring a peek at what's out there to be explored.
.... an effort to help people develop new adventuring groups as well as play with their current one.
.... an effort to help new players become familiar with the world and with older players.
.... an effort to allow for slower and more directed, meaningful exploration, without the feeling that "if we don't rush through these areas, this will take ten hours instead of five."

This series is not.....

.... a set of conventional quests with plots and stories.
.... a way to gather CNR.

The format goes like this:

1) Name the area we'll visit and a starting location. Most locations will require multiple sessions, so often the session will end and start within the dungeon. Therefore, the primary duty of the GM is to port folks in and out for these short sessions.
2) Give level req's (I'll aim for high, mid, and low levels areas).
3) Each session runs for two hours, two and a half max.
4) No XP will be offered, save for maybe 500xp RP bonks. The payoff is the exploration and monster XP.
5) The party closes after it enters the dungeon. The party opens again when it's time to visit a new dungeon.
6) Gathering CNR during the trip is prohibited. However, dropped loot is kept and split by the party as usual. This doesn't mean that we can't go to places that have CNR, but gathering CNR is not the purpose. Exploration and PC interaction is the primary goal here.

The purpose of this thread, other than to explain the new series, is to allow for everyone to make requests on dungeons/areas people wish to explore. So, with that said, request away! You've got slightly less than a week to choose the first place to go.

Silkwood spider cave... I've heard a lot of eerie things about it through Dorg and some other people in IRC. Maybe Hlint should be the starting point?

Level req wise... I honestly don't know what's appropriate there. It sounds a bit mid-ish

Simple, but a good idea I think.  I'll make what of them I can and am level'd correctly for.

I'd make a request but I don't know of any areas to ask for that I have not been.  I know they are out there, I'm just not worldly enough to know of them.  I think there is someplace past the winter werewolves.  But I don't know if its an area or a dungeon.

Once again, sound sgood Milty.

The Silkwood Spider Cave...  good place to start.  I've been there and... well... haven't gotten to the bottom (I don't think)....

Word of advice...  Bring LOTS! of antidotes/wands of remove poison/restoration potions/bandages....  Or just bring like 7 clerics...  ;)

I'd say somewhere between levels 8-15 for that place.  Tyra, Maran, Fleur, and Willy survived most of it (with the help of Willy's 20 Cure Poison Wands)...

Two for the silkwood spider cave. And don't give advice, Shiff! Make everyone figure it out on their own! ;)

I vote for the Broken Halls.
I was in there a LONG LONG time ago and it was very tricky.  It would make for some great RP.

I also wouldn't mind Arindor's Demise, however my choice of characters for that area is limited by IC oath.

I would love to see some of the new areas north of Dalanthar, however this would restrict many lower levels.  I do not even know what caves/dungeons/crypts might be up there to request.

Either the Broken Halls or the Spider Cave sounds fun.  I have never made it very far into the second level of the Broken Halls.

I would also like to see what is on Alindor and the dragon Isles for future outings.  (Other than Kenku and Minotaurs, respectively, that is)

I believe its called the Whitehorn forest, the area near Wayfare, past the satyrs. I have been farther back only twice where the wild magic is, and well not sure what is past the baddies there.

Thats the Forest of Moans.... ;)

Bad stuff lives there. Really bad.

*coughs* I want it to be known that just because I am hosting this series does not mean that I am responsible for TPK's and SS losses, since I'm letting you choose the danger you want to get into. ;)

There is something past that deadly dark place? I am up for a look at that.

The host takes all responsibility for the end scene.

Lets go there! *laughs*

But seriously... I know a few places that havent been touched upon in awhile... Enderal Dungeon being one. Hardly gets visited.
Title: Re: The Troll King presents: The Explorer Series
Post by: ycleption on December 11, 2008, 05:55:10 pm
Places that hardly get touched would be lovely...
I would love to go to the Dark Peaks of the Watchers.. (that place past the forest of moans), I've peeked in there a few times, and been scared at what I saw.

I don't know where Enderal dungeon is, so I'd be happy with that.

If there is something on the mid/low end, perhaps something that would require a bit more exploration than simply a dungeon... A tour of the Dragon islands, or maybe a romp around Vanavar (depending on the levels). I'd argue against something like the spider cave, because it's relatively small, and easily doable for a party without needing a break for porting out.

At some point, I'd love to have a long tour of the Spikes, or the kingdom of Ilarial... places that are difficult for people without a whole lot of time, or who don't often join the high level parties needed.

The wild magic area Bye the crazy monks , is nice never made it to the bottom temple  but thats for higher Pcs ,

Lower lvls my choice would be Seilwood spider cave

Based on your 2.5 hour session reqs... I think I can think of a pretty solid 6-8 session venture that not too many folks know about.

;)

That one would be pretty stout for the sub-20 crowd though.  As for the request format... just put it in as the 'great traverse'.

Post by: miltonyorkcastle on December 12, 2008, 12:31:35 am
Already planning on that one, Chongo. That will be a special case, though, and I'm hoping the next update hits before we try that one.

I would say the Broken Halls for low-mid level folks, and the place at the far end of the Dragon Isles, where there is the *coughs* mean thing, the latter would likely be ~20th+ level place. ;)

This sounds great, the kind of thing I'd really want to come along on! :D
I don't mind the place, as long as it's exciting, but Broken Halls sounds good, don't think I've really been there...
Anywhere I haven't been really, I'm not picky.

Please note Format item #1 that there can be multiple sessions for one dungeon. You then start where you left off the previous time.

Yep, it's the aspect I really like about this series idea.  We can break it into 6 sessions instead of not sleeping for two days.

Title: Re: The Troll King presents: The Explorer Series
Post by: miltonyorkcastle on December 15, 2008, 11:59:16 am
For when, see the calender; for where, I'll post here.

And sorry, Interia, the times are as is based on when my daughter goes to bed. :P

Though perhaps it can be changed if another GM wants to host an earlier start time. Unfortunately dungeon-crawling is out of the question when Hannah's awake.

Finally, it would appear that I currently have the most votes for the Silkwood spider cave, so we'll start there.

Suggested Level Req for this one is 1st-11th lvl characters. If you're above the range, but wish to come (and I'm mainly speaking to near/post epic characters), please plan to use that oak crossbow you found instead of your totally-awesome-axe-of-head-chopping. You know what I'm saying.

The "quest" will start in Hlint.

If I'm not too tired tonight, I'll make a poll with every dungeon/adventuring area I can find in the module. Then we'll descend in order by number of votes for the places we will visit, with the exception of when I start the very long Deep Trek (tm).

Remember, you have all the time in the world (in two hour increments) to explore, discuss, and write tales of the amazing dungeons you will visit.

Another possible destination...

Any cave / crypt / dungeon on Corsain, Tilmar, Alibor or Vanavar.
Or even a tour of the entire realm would be interesting.  We can skip those nasty monks though.

I am not sure of the specific level requirements, though being on Central, there would be a minimum of 8th level for any of these.

This series is mostly player driven, so people can meet up and head out before I even get there, it's just that if you come to a stopping place and are ready to port out and wait until next week, or if you have any other issue, I won't be around to help until after 9pm CST. Other GM's can hop in and help, though.

There will be no Explorer event this coming (Christmas) week. We'll pick back up again around New Year's, though not New Year's Eve. Watch the calender for an updated time (possibly December 30th or January 2nd). Thanks!

Happy Holidays!

Well, I'm trying to figure out a time we can pick this up before the week is out, but a few things are up in the air right now (specifically, my wife got tickets to the Cotton Bowl on Friday, and while I'm actually not going because I have to work, she's going with her dad which leaves me to sort out who's watching Hannah while I work and a few other things.) If you guys have any suggestions on times or otherwise, let me know. I was thinking of doing the Ruins of Madness this time around, which is an 8th-17th level dungeon.

Broken Halls - Mid levels 8-16

 Thorn Dungeon - Mid/high 12-20

Enderal Dungeon - Mid levels  8-16

 Lizardman Quest - 10+

 Dungeon of the Eye - 10 +

Moss Crypt might be another place.. can't say for sure though, as I've never made it very far in.

That would prolly suit 12 - 20 lvls

I would second the broken halls suggestion. Arindor's fell would be another great place - it requires a broad range of skill sets (usually need a caster and a lockpicker), so it would be ideal for this kind of thing. I would say levels 10-15.

For this event (http://forums.layonara.com/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=9742&day=2009-1-15&c=3), how about the Crypt/Mausoleum on the King's Road on Alindor. No idea how big it is, never been inside; the door is locked and trapped, I'm assuming there is a dungeon on the other side. :)

Title: Re: The Troll King presents: The Explorer Series

Hmm... that gives me an idea..... I think it may be time to start on the "Classic Dregar Tour!" aka the "Dregar Run." Be prepared to visit every forest, mountain, cave, nook and cranny of Dregar, with the noted exceptions of the Rift and Essrantor's Domain, but with the addition of Vanavar.

Starts in Lor. Same time as usual. First site: Forest of Fog. We'll see how far we get. Level reqs are 8th and up**

** If you're above 20th level, don't overpower everything; allow encounters to be challenging. You know what I'm saying. Also, for those of you who have specific ties to areas of Dregar *pokes Angela* and want to pop in at the time the group reaches an area, I'll be posting the new starting point each week (which would have been the endpoint from the previous week) so you can prepare to be around for the group's appearance.

This is, as Minerva suggested, a good chance for new folks to hook up with a group and explore somewhere other than Mistone and the fire-opal cave :p , which means two things:

1) New folks that read this need to show up.
2) Long-time players that read this need to encourage new players to join.

I've had a request to bump this week's installment due to another quest running at the same time. Since this is a very PC maintained series, I leave the decision up to you guys. But whether we go this week or not, the starting point and situation remains the same as per the events from last week.

Meet in Lor, and I'll port to location (inside the "Goblin House," Forest of Fog). For those others that wish to join, do the same, only your starting location will differ, and it may be several minutes before the groups join up.

I was talking to a Stargazer yesterday, and looking at the calender, when I realized that once again the Doomchicken has decided to challenge the King for a Wednesday night slot. However, the bird lucked out in that I am in the process of moving my family from an apartment into a house this week, and probably need the extra time to get that done. So, for one more week I shall allow the intruder to use the King's space, but next week, next week I shall retake my rightful place at the head of CST Wednesday evenings.

You are not feeling well.  You seem to be coming down with a mild headache and stuffy nose.  You need to call in sick to work tomorrow......  You will begin to feel normal again around 8PM CST tomorrow evening.

Tomorrow is fine! ;)

So in the eventuality that there is a trip this week. What are the options?

Starts in Orc's Watch, Dregar, at the same time the Calendar indicates. We are, in fact, still on the "Dregar Run." Level req remains 8+. Please review the rest of this thread if you have any questions.

Reminder: The quest is open for new PC's to join and there is no party-size limit.

Where will be next one Milty?

Still on Dregar ? Or are we planning to go other place ?

We're still making the huge circuit of Dregar, and the next session will start in Highpass. However, no quest this week. I've a few things I have to get done before this week is over, both RL and Layo related.

We're back on for this week! PM me any questions.

Starts in Highpass (as previously noted).

Hm. Seems like tonight was an off night for everyone else but me and Jennara.

We even had a few (feathered and braceleted )perks around tonight as well. Better luck next time!

I've been trying to find my way to Highpass but so far all I have for my efforts is some hobbit weed, roast crag cat, and a severe beating from the Storm Mountain giants. Can I get directions to Highpass?
From "Near the Bay of Carocsa" (which is south of Dalanthar)
East to "The Rolling Hills"
South to "Rondora Lake"
East to "The Rolling Hills" (arriving from the south)
East to "West of Point Dart" - take care here
North to "Mountain of Storms" - take care here
North to "Highpass"
*cough* Perhaps Shrowd needs a good map (http://forums.layonara.com/trade-market-hall/162972-maps-sale.html). ;)

Good question. **peeks at the calender** Hmm... looks like we left off in the middle of a dungeon... so that's where we'll pick up... but the meet-up point is Willow's Weep.

New folks who wish to join park in Willows and the party will catch up to you when they exit the dungeon, which will likely take about half an hour (so feel free to show up a bit late if you're wishing to join and weren't with the group already knee deep in danger).

EDIT: It's Ruins of Madness, Script, but hey, same thing I guess.
Title: Re: The Troll King presents: The Explorer Series
Post by: ShiffDrgnhrt on March 18, 2009, 01:01:40 pm
How do you get to Willow's Weep without getting eaten!?

Wait, I know how...  go Towards the Rift from Dalanthar, then go past North Point, right?

OH!  And Newer Players that can make it (meaning have a level 8 Character) should come, at least to Willow's Weep!  You can meet my PC, Tyra, in Leringard early and I'll bring you all there.

Post by: Carillon on March 18, 2009, 02:01:26 pm
Players can also use the portal from Spellgard to port to North Point, and then it is just one transition south of there. Like the Dalanthar portal, this one has a cost of 300 gp.

Or they can be anywhere on Central (server) and request a friendly GM port.............................

Next session (tomorrow) meets in Prantz to await port to location outside the ruined Ca'Duzite temple.

The quest is still open; same start time. PM me (or post here) with questions.

One thing to note: This series, as the name implies, is to focus on really exploring an area. Ask questions; look for more than what's visually represented on the screen. You just might learn something new about the place you've visted a hundred times before. For that matter, if you don't find out everything you want to know regarding some location, and your character would try and find out, PM me with what ways your character tries to get more information. Don't be afraid to take initiative. In fact, that's what this series is all about: player initiative.

Voltrex is an option, if a wee bit dangerous. Would be fun NPCing the uppity elves, though. Just a reminder, as soon as the update comes out, the Explorers will be diving into the Deep.

Okay, one more "off" week while I study up on the new areas and monsters/NPCs.

However, on April 15th:

Destination: The Deep.
Level: OPEN*
Starting Location: Leringard.

*Note: The Deep is very dangerous. Bring characters below 17th level at your own risk.

Starting location: Arnax

Party size: Still open.
Danger level: Still ridiculous.
Fun factor: Equally ridiculous.
Newcomers: Welcome. Just be prepared with your own RP excuse as to why in the world you were wandering around in the Deep all by yourself when you just "happened" upon the party of adventurers.

No explorers this week or the next. Got some stuff to work on this week and family in town next week.

Also, be thinking of where you want to go. I mean, if I keep the Deep on the docket, you guys will just keep going (as proven by last session) and keep getting smooshed! You people are crazy (an attribute I admire, I must admit)!

You guys did make it pretty far, though... I think you visited about 1/3 of the Deep.
Title: Re: The Troll King presents: The Explorer Series
Post by: Acacea on May 27, 2009, 05:32:33 pm
Heh, well, we continued with the Deep 'cause that's where we left off... hard to say where anyone ends up or why after, otherwise.

It was only the "death on successful ranged touch" that got anybody killed, anyway... *mutters*
Title: Re: The Troll King presents: The Explorer Series
Post by: davidhoff on May 27, 2009, 06:14:39 pm
I don't mind the deep...I think our little party did pretty good last time and if we had some "foe", as I've heard it called, for the final part we would have faired much better.

It would be nice to have some others return or show though...especially a stout fighter type that eats alot of pork to take on those water elementals.

Ferrit can't afford to keep attending.  That's why she stopped coming before.  Books containing protection against undeath are extremely hard to come by, and potions are expensive.  Sorry.
Title: Re: The Troll King presents: The Explorer Series
Post by: Lord Dark on May 29, 2009, 08:50:40 am
I kept asking if I should have used a book before the accident but forgot the basic rule of the Deep, "always have true seeing and death protection!" So, if we continue down there, I'll try to get another tome... but I'm up for anywhere!
Title: Re: The Troll King presents: The Explorer Series
Post by: davidhoff on May 29, 2009, 02:36:22 pm
Oh I didn't know that "foe" was from a tomb that had charges....I thought it was a dragon scale that had unlimited uses/day.  Yes that does make the use of "foe" costly and a bit of a guessing game so to speak.

I'm up for whatever, and I appologize if I came across as attributing fault; that was not my purpose.  I was trying to defend our small party by saying we would have kicked their arses if we had foe is all.

Actually foe is a ninth level Cleric spell. The Dusty Old Tome has maybe enough charges for 15 foes and the black dragon scales also has charges for a few uses but is still limited.

Those were lowered in the last update - just as an fyi so you know to conserve them.  Their rarity also increased.

Sorry folks.

davidhoff, see [LORE]Undeath's Eternal Foe[/LORE]. Of course, your character may still not know much if anything at all about the spell other than the short reference "Foe."
