vista and nwn
« on: March 05, 2007, 06:31:52 pm »
A friend of mine has nothing but fantastic things to say about Layonara and I finally was able to get the money to buy a new computer(my old one dies after 4.5 years) and try this out and what happens... Microsoft screwed me. NWN as far as I can tell is incompatible with windows vista (which was on, pretty much, all computers you can buy now). I bought NWN diamond, and the game did load, but when I try to play..."This program is blocked due to compatibility issues".
I tried to update the NWN to the latest version and got

"Your game version is: 1.66.8074 English
An incorrect version of the file was found on your system.
The update was unable to complete, since the file contents were incorrect.
C:\\NeverwinterNights\\NWN\\nwm\\Chapter2E.nwm
File Size: 17088702
File CheckSum: c4aeece165bef1f2ed3958218d7844fc
Get the critical rebuild.
http://nwn.bioware.com/support/patch_english_hotu.html#crit
The patch has been aborted"

Checking online I have found no solutions. Bioware says they HOPE to resolve this in the future.
Please Help a newbie out. I have very much been looking forward to the Layonara experience.

Thanks in advance,
Stolen

I don't suppose you can take the computer back and ask them to put Windows XP onto it? Or buy/download/whatever's legal, a copy of XP for yourself?

I have thought about going duel boot with xp but was hoping I wouldnt have to resort to that. as far as taking it back... other than this issue I really like my new computer. I'd hate to have to take it back just fot this.

I was told from DeLL Techs that on the Microsoft website, there is a program to revert your Windows Vista to a previous windows version.  Haven't checked it out yet ...

sounds like you have an error in your install
wipe it clean uninstall the whole game

then after you have loaded the main plus the expansions
update
then load your layo haks

Ravemore what version of NWN are you running. I got diamond, the only one I can find in stores. I dont know if if makes any difference but the critical rebuild doesen't seem to work on diamond. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and cutting out all the extras that come with diamond but got the same results.

    And the real killer

As for downgrading your computer to WinXP. I highly advise against it. There's a small chance that you're computer might experience a few glitches because it was meant to run Vista.
It's all up to you, of course.

    Goodluck

this sounds like a real issue to moving forward. I mean the current player base will do whatever it takes to stay on Layo. But how are we going to attract new players if NWN cant run on Vista. The bioware website says it will not run at this time. Ravenmore, did you upgrade to vista over your exsisting applications/ or did you buy a new computer and load NWN Gold? I would say this is misson critical to the growth of our community. We will lose a lot (most) of the new people that come looking if we say "you have run windows XP, so wipe Vista and you are good to go". This will get more prominant as it gets harder to buy NWN and the churn on XP machines grows. I am sure that six months from now you will still be able to get NWN online but to ask people that have new computers to buy windows XP also and then to dual boot or wipe vista just seems a little too much. I hope our gurus here can help find a solution to this.

*chuckles* like I said, I have no issues and have been running it daily for well over a month on my Windows Vista. I did not install it though. I hooked up my old laptop to my new one through my wireless router on a direct connect cable...I then transfered the entire NWN directory to my new machine. Took awhile, but went through with no hitch.

so what that means is if you have a fully upgraded install it will run! But if you have a new install you cannot get to full up grade due to it being blocked. If it was legal you could create a image of your install and we would be done, but it is not :)

    From Bioware:
1.51: Neverwinter Nights Windows Vista compatibility issues. (All versions) (Back to Top)

All versions of Neverwinter Nights to v1.68 are not compatible with Windows Vista and have been blocked from installation by the operating system. BioWare hopes to address this issue in a future NWN patch release.

wait new idea. Use a old system and load and upgrade NWN and add all the files for Layo and then do what Ravenmore did. Still that is too much to ask of new players.

If it helps, I downloaded all the layo haks and stuff directly to my vista machine and installed them. I had no problems with it.

I agree, it is a lot.

I dont think it will be a layo issue with that said. But the base issue remains.

We really should mark this with a big RED light.
