YOU DO NOT KNOW MY NAME!
« on: February 14, 2006, 11:24:05 am »
I'm sorry but this is one of my BIGGEST pet peeves, is when I'm trying to play Caldiir, who RARELY lets anyone know his true name and someone uses his name in conversation when I've never seen the character before.  I'm not mad or anything, but it just frustrates me to see it happening.  What is everyone else's take on this?

Yeah..no one is wearing a "Hello, my name is: ______________" sticker on their shirts.
As a GM it can be extra frustrating, because there are only so many models we can use.
  Label reading = bad.

I refer to them as 'Hey you' or 'You, Dwarf' or something similar when I don't know them.

My opinion:  The only solution is to name your PC with your fake name at creation.  After that, people will learn your real name through RP only.

Another PW I visited strictly enforced that PCs be named with descriptions only, no names (eg. a dark skinned elf).  That way, all names had to be learned through RP.

Wow, that sounds pretty cool, Pen. I think I'll try that with my next Layo Char...

Not a bad idea, but a lot of people do RP it properly.  There are a few characters (or were) that introduce themselves with different names.  I think it adds to the RP, knowing that they are hiding something and you have to pretend you dont know who there are.

I know Isilme never calls anyone by their name, unless she hears them being called it or is told it.  I told think she has ever called your character koppig.  She only refers to him as pig, even when talking to other people.  Most of the people I RP with, do the same as well.  The only time I might use someones names before being told it is in an emote to indicate i am talking too or looking at that person.

I agree it is real annoying, but I hope it is in the minority.

    @Stephen:

I suggest you refrain from NOT using your characters "real" name when creating them. Using a fake name, or no name at all, could and probably will cause confusion. Players and GMs pay attention and will probably end up reporting a character who's name was not approved. Then things start happening where we get people checking on the Forum for the character name until eventually you get pulled over IG by a GM and spoken to. In short it would probably end in you having to restart and rename your character.  ;)

I try to introduce my character by the monicker (sp?) Hood, simply because he wears a hood all the time and it doesn't make sense for him to mention his name, especially when it could get him kicked out of places. *grins*  But it's hard to do that when someone says his real name before RP'ing for the information.

If I could disable the floaty names above your PCs I would do so without a second thought, however this just isn't possible or practical.

Also, the idea of naming your characters something descriptive, is a good idea providing the entire world is setup that way which in our case it is not. As mentioned above, there are many reasons why the names must remain as they are.

This is illustrating a defined need for bringing this topic up with new players immediately. Perhaps an addendum to the handbook, a LORE page dedicated to "RP Guidelines" or something along those lines are in order.

Heh, I can 100% agree with you, Deacon. My old character Ne'er was supposed to be in disguise and only told one person his real name. But some people would either forget the name I gave or simply just read the label anyway. *shrugs* Eventually part of the fun of playing a disguised character was lost due to label reading.

I do understand it gets tough to remember the names of every character you meet. Sometimes you aren't sure if you've given your name or recieved them, so it is understandable sometimes. But, as I think I have always done, when in doubt assume you don't know their name.

A general hint is to write down all names your character knows.

    That's what I do.

I also write the names given to me of everyone I meet in my CD thread (along with a link to the character's profile on LORE, for the character description).  With the hyperlinking, I can remember everyone with a quick glance at my CD thread if I lose my piece of paper with everyone's name.

RP'ing folks names is fun, especially when someone doesn't want to give me their name, like Zill, so I just call him GuyWithHat, the conversation we had about this was a lot of fun.
