perhaps not pedantic though it may appropriate, but more likely condescending in the thought that we are too stupid to know the meaning of pedantic.

actually, Ice, it would be a matter of ignorance on our part, rather than stupidity.  and since everyone is ignorant of something, I don't suppose it's so bad that there are 'English' speakers who are not familiar with the word.
