Title: Layonara is soon to be migrating to Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition
Post by: orth on March 27, 2019, 03:22:33 pm
A lot more details to come.

Expected migration is a couple of weeks, could be sooner, could be later, may depend on testing but there are administrative tasks that need to be performed as well.

Speaking of testing though, I'm going to need testers so if you have EE already and want to help test please raise your hand in this thread. You will need to be accessible via Discord (https://discord.gg/YQRd5hB) to help test.

Again, I'll have a post(s) in this thread with a lot more information but I wanted to start with an official heads up and let people know if they don't yet have EE it will be needed soon.

Yes. If you're still running XP I also worry about your graphics cards too. NWN:EE will support 10 year old type hardware but not 20 and the same goes for the software drivers needed. I don't know what your hardware is so I can't comment on the upgrade path or cost. Nor do I know what else you use your PCs for but if you want to continue on with Layonara you're going to have to upgrade to at least Win7 or move to Linux or if it's in your budget consider an altogether new (refurb) machine, even something like this (https://www.amazon.com/OptiPlex-Workstation-Quad-Core-WINDOWS-GRAPHICS/dp/B06XS27Y2Y/ref=sr_1_12?keywords=windows+7+computer+nvidia&qid=1553727015&s=gateway&sprefix=coffee+cr%2Caps%2C151&sr=8-12) will suffice.

Thanks for the link and info.

We run Dell Optiplex GX 280's right now with Pentium(R) 4 CPU, 2.8GHz, 1.99GB Ram (Ram was upgraded a little by us). Our graphics cards are original equipment; Intel(R) 82915G, Express Chipset Family.

Wonder if cheaper to buy Win7 (x2) and two graphics cards? We'd need miscrosoft office for Word and Excell.

We use our computers for light business (Word, Excell, Quickbooks) and casual internet surfing and email. Probably Layo is the biggest draw.

We'll look into our options some more. $189 (from your link) for a new system doesn't seem to bad considering.

Feel free to consult me before buying but I think for the headache that can come from attempting an upgrade of XP to 7 plus installing new graphics drivers the cost of that would be close enough to just grab a refurb instead. Here's another option (https://www.amazon.com/Dell-MiniTower-Processor-Professional-Refurbished/dp/B07P97GMF1/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=windows+7+dell+optiplex&qid=1553739818&refinements=p_n_feature_seven_browse-bin%3A18107820011&rnid=3012494011&s=pc&sr=1-1) right here.

Thanks again. We're kinda still waivering on the cost issue and the setup time. Also I've formed a bond with my old Dell.

We're considering the Linux option now. It seems to be free. I'm learning more about it but it sounds interesting. I was hoping on being able to run it at the same time as windows, but not sure if I can or how. Any advice about installing/running Linux and playing NWNEE on it?

Also, we might just get the EE and try running it on our current system n see what happens. Some forum posts say it may work.

You can look up dual booting linux and windows xp, it's not incredibly difficult. But certainly give it a try on just windows xp if you've caught some reports of it working perhaps.

Definitely try to run it on your current system and see how it performs. Alternatively, look at Ubuntu which it appears NWN EE runs on natively. Then I would use Wine to run your on-prem Office software. No costs above the NWN EE costs.

This is all good advice if XP doesn't work out. That's what I run as my NWN:EE client, Ubuntu 18. And for all my office suite I use Libreoffice (https://www.libreoffice.org/).

I didn't have much luck with wine to play Diamond, but I found a slick program called "Porting Kit" that uses wine wrappers but it's all tweaked for the game. Hope it helps...

I only run linux.... so I run nwn original on linux natively, as well as Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition Digital Delux (x2) on my machine (you can run about 10 copies of the game before you can start to slow down a geforce 1070). I've got an optiplex 745 slim i use as a server, you can play nwn on it run 2 nwn servers, and possibly EE on it if you buy a slim card. not sure if you have the slim models or not

I would -not- buy windows 7, you're going to end up in the same situation down the road. Windows 7 is near it's EOL... If i was you I'd get Lubuntu (you don't want to run unity on that old hardware trust me) and run vmware for your M$ office suite. you can install and run windows xp and your office using virtual box or vmware or qemu.
you can run MS office in wine, and Excell. Open office can handle anything they put out I believe, but I wouldn't use Open Office, I'd use libreoffice

For whatever reason I couldn't get it to work, but I'm new to the Mac scene... I'm sure it wasn't the application or computer that was the hang up there... But like I said, porting kit made it stupid easy, and they have a ton of games to go with it.
Title: Re: Layonara is soon to be migrating to Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition
Post by: orth on April 01, 2019, 03:26:51 pm
Here are a couple starting notes for the migration:

Migrating your Characters
If you have played on Layonara before and still have your old CD Key you will be able to migrate your characters from the servervault automatically. To do this you need to copy your old nwncdkey.ini file from NWN 1.69 and place it in the new NWN:EE folder (this is usually My Documents/Neverwinter Nights for Windows installs.) You will know it's the proper place for the file if you see a cdkey.ini file in that folder, as that's the key file for NWN:EE. Once that's done, you will also need to make sure your login name is the same as the one you used on the old Layonara. You will be prompted for this before you login. Remember it's case sensitive! if your login name before was orth don't enter Orth. If you do not have your old cd key and can prove you are the player who once played certain characters, please send me a PM. If you have access to your forum account this is usually sufficient evidence.

Automatic Content Downloading With NWSYNC
The first time you connect to the new version you will be presented with an automatic download dialog box. NWN:EE includes a fantastic new feature called nwsync that means players no longer need to download, extract and install haks. Whenever changes are made that would in the past require hak updates you will now just automatically download the content before connecting to the server. Note: there is no way to speed this process up for the first time even if you already have the old layonara haks. In addition while the download will be large the first time, future downloads will be much smaller.

New Features and Bug Fixes
The extent of the improvements made and bugs fixed in NWN:EE can be viewed in this log of updates at Steam (https://steamcommunity.com/app/704450/allnews/). (some are still in the dev edition) I have also added some great new feature enhancements and fixed a lot of issues specific to Layonara. Over the coming while I will outline some of these features so they're used and passed along. To get you started please make sure to read the updated online help system using =c help

Apologies for the Halfbaked comment if someone took it the wrong way. . This has nothing to do with the excellent Developer team we have here..
Too bad Layo Devs team didnt have the coin the so called AA game producers have out there ..I envision even greater things than what we have here if that were the case.

You don't need the digital deluxe edition to play on Layonara, just so that's clear. Beamdog has NWN:EE (https://store.beamdog.com/products/neverwinter-nights-enhanced-edition) for $19.99, gog.com (https://www.gog.com/game/neverwinter_nights_enhanced_edition_pack) has it for the same as well as Steam (https://store.steampowered.com/app/704450/Neverwinter_Nights_Enhanced_Edition/).

PCs can set their size to give a bit of a more custom look, size can be tiny, small, normal, large, huge. Currently a PC can use this as often as they want but please only set it with the setting that you want, experiment and then stick to it. Changing of size is logged and we don't want to see a PC manipulating it on a whim whenever they feel like it[/li][/list]

Will there be lenience in quests where someone designs a costume that might bulk them up, like a tall skinny guy with a well made animal bladder to make him look like a tall huge guy? :D

The test server is running for people to drop in and help report any issues.

Direct connect to ee.layonara.com:5121

Note: I'm running some profiling stuff, so things might be a little slower than what will be typical.
Note 2: Your PC will be transferred over automatically as described earlier in this thread. If the testing turns out to not mess up anything critical then we will continue with all experience/info gained. If there's major problems I may need to reset all chars/database to the previous point.
Note 3: The old server will continue to run for now but your characters will now be forked if we don't need to do a redo.

Feel free to talk with me on Discord (https://discord.gg/YQRd5hB) to discuss issues, I'll also be logged on as DM but not always at my keyboard.

Post by: orth on April 27, 2019, 04:49:25 pm
Yes. Forked. The PC can't expect to play both the old server and the new server and expect continuity with their characters. The new server contains a snapshot of the old server's character at this point.

This is all just for now, the old server is going to be taken down eventually when we're confident everything is working fine on the new one anyway.

For those that are porting over... When you log in, give it a few seconds as sometimes it takes a bit for the characters to pop up. Don't think it won't work, it just takes a little bit.

Yeah, you can also copy your old installation's override, portraits and music folders' innards to their appropriate folders in \Documents\Neverwinter Nights\ so you'll get the same overrides, portraits and the layonara custom music with the EE version without the need to download everything once again.

I guess I didn't fix them not being destroyed upon logout, thought a quick fix would do it, but there's probably more. I'll take a closer look later tonight.

In the meantime you're fine to use one, it won't hurt anything. Just don't try using multiple ones.

Thanks

You can gain items and character levels/XP/gold but keep them on your PC and I can migrate okay. Anything else is a kind of a pain in the butt.

Don't use bank vaults nor persistent storage, also crafting XP will be lost too.

I'm also taking your honour here at stake to not do the following: take something from your persistent chests and put them on your PC. If you do this that item will be in the new server's persistent chest and on your character, hence duplicating an item.

I can verify the differences in chests if I really feel like I need to audit, but I think you guys are honourable enough to not try to cheat the system. If you absolutely need something from a persistent chest then please tell me and I will delete it on the new server. Same goes for gold/items from a bank vault.

A few more notes on some of the new stuff:

* Custom weapons work completely now, all feats and such, you can even be a double scimitar weapon master for example. The light pick, katar, sai, wind fire wheel and nunchaku are considered finessable. Katar for tiny+, the rest for small+ creatures. (Thanks to Hellblazer for the help with this)
* New spawns have random sizing
* Players can name their holy symbols
* Players can bold words/short phrases that they speak by surrounding them with
Code: [Select]
to show emphasis
* Spammy unnecessary feedback messages have been removed. You remember that wall of text that used to tell you your quest journal has been updated the first time you logged in after a reset for example.
* When you lose a strand a tell is sent to you instead of a combat message as before it would get lost in the combat logging
* No one can log in while server is starting up as the passwords are different until the start up is completed

Just some fixes that have been made, thanks for all the folks using the =c bug command

- True Seeing VFX on eyes works again
- Racial bonuses on ammunition works again
- GMW and Magic Weapon works on ranged again
- Horses being invisible was fixed (they were actually scaled to zero)
- Pawn shops should keep cycling through the six open quests instead of stopping after a few
- Merchants not opening their inventory has been fixed

A couple of these are in the next patch update I'll do when it's quiet but most of them are in the running module. I will keep changelogs in a cleaner place for future releases instead of continuing to use this thread.

Where are the chat logs stored with EE? Is it in a new location, or have I just forgotten where to look. Thought it was in logs folder.

Ok, think I found it.

In nwnplayer.ini, set ClientChatLogging=1 and that should start logging to the logs directory.

Hi,

It has been a while but finally got the NWN EE installed. When I logged in, I didn't see my characters ported over. Should I create a test character? Thank you.

Finally! *grins* I think Orth knows better but what he usually does is just port your chars over but it might be helpful to create a test char.....we'll see what he says.

Hello,

Please create test characters, yes. I'm sorry I didn't get to this sooner. NWN is going to be getting a large patch soon and I'm working on the updates Layonara will require.

I only see two test characters under the same account. You'll need two accounts to play simultaneously with NWN:EE. Did you purchase two licenses? Perhaps you will need to update one of the cdkey.ini files to the other.

Ohhh... sorry. My sister logged in with the one purchased by me. At the "player's name" screen, she put her name. Does she need to do that whole long process like me? She has the old game with separate key and stuffs.

I have the Platinum version. Guess that's not good enough? And if I have to purchase the EE, is it just going to overwrite updated files or totally reinstall the full version again in another file? Lost and confused … (yeah, always been that way :P )

Yeah nwn ee is a totally new game but its pretty much the same thing with tweaks. You'll need to buy it and install it. It will be a separate game than your old nwn 169 game. Its a pretty long download. Once u get it running Orth can port your chars over. Best of luck and Jil needs to get IG and give Kal and Sehks some lessons!

First; Woot!!!!

Second; purchase it either through steam or GoG. Don’t update it to the 64 bit client yet. Then create a test character under the account name you want to use, once everything is installed. At that time Orth will move all the toon over from your previous accounts.

NWN:EE I got as a torrent download and upon further research, there have been 4 patch updates. The torrents for those have extremely small seeder counts and hard to find. The game plays fine. I have 2 of the 4 update patches, just wasn't sure which one Layo was on.

Not going to talk about the legality at hand here ;) but from what I know, you wouldn't be able to use it anyways because the codes required for the game are not the same as the diamonds ones. Although I could be wrong there. Both Steam and GOG have the game at 23$.
