Title: Leveling
Post by: on October 18, 2004, 01:39:00 PM
I'm new to "role-playing" with actual people and I want to do my best to not ruin the mood for others.  (Sorry about the shout outs a couple of nights ago, learning the custom text macro.)  I'm a Paladin of Toran and I'm curious what is an appropriate way to tell others in the game that I gained a level and want to take of it.  Also, telling people how many levels I have obtained.  Thanks.

I usually like to level while praying. Its easy with a Cleric of Paladin, you've just become closer to your God.

Meditating, reflecting on lessons learned, yeah any of the above are great as well and keep everyone in RP.

Thanks for the input.

Describing my level, I guess I could say, "I've survived a couple (or several) adventures in my time."

Or you could say, I've seen many winters during my time here....

People usually ask me seasons as if they are years, and that works.  Wish we could have like a birthday and everyone's ages goes up one.

Then Matilda went from 17 to 29 in less than a month. Don't know about that. If we had very slow, progressive leveling, it would be. But, its more like a skyrocket, down time, skyrocket, down time. Eh. That doesn't make much sense.

too bad we didn't understand the seasons for Layo better.  Like wouldn't it be cool if it snowed sometimes in Hlint?  or that the seasons were more pronounced?  that would be cool

"Toran has granted me new knowledge"

"Been here for "X" seasons"

I'm not a huge fan of using the term seasons.  Then again I hate the CR sheet.  If you are much higher level and want people to know it - it should come out in abstract pragraph form, as in, let me tell you a tale of the day I defeated the ancient lich of....
It works for lower levels too.  I mean, what the heck are seasons and why are they asking me my age like that?  Hrm... 548 I think?  But the there are no seasons in the deep dark from where I come...    I usually mess with people asking me that - sorry, it's not that I'm mean or dislike you - just don't understand the necessity for it.  As far as leveling goes - it can be as simple as telling your party that you need to stop and think on things.  I mean, that could mean you leveled or need to go talk to your lawyer - quite honestly - does it matter?  And if you have buddies you like and want to shout out to them about making lvl 13 because it was such a haul - by all means send a pm if you guys like doing that.  Btu I know a lot of people that just don't want to hear about tnl or lvls.  Anyhow - find something you like, and do it.  Unless it is cleaving noobs heads.

I try not to talk about leveling in game, like party talk or just talking. Its not really RP to talk about it.

If I am going to level I tell the party leader that I have leveled and I need time to take spells (in a Tell).
I RP learning new spells and feeling stronger then before. :)

There really isn't an IC reason to tell another player what level you are, as they can gauge you comparative level by examining you (right click, and then click the eye thingie)

The only real reason anyone may need to know your level is if they want to know if you meet the level restriction for an item, and usually they would then ask OOC.

Paldains, Clerics, Druids and a few others, say that they need to go pray.  When they come back, they say, "(whoever there god is) has given me insight into my travles".

I've just stopped calling attention to it really. Lives aren't divided into 40 different stages.

speaking of levels is for sure where many new players struggle. It is actually easiest to simply not talk of them at all. There are no levels in RL when playing sport are there?...  the point to make really is that as your character gains experience you can RP that in general conversation quite effectively - your character has seen more combat, and so he can give better advice, and make his feelings of what can/cant be done easily better known.

Another way of doing it would be to speak in terms of what spells/skills you've learned.  Instead of refering to "level 10", you can say you now know how to {insert appropriate skill or spell learned at that level by that class here}.

I'd also try not to use the newly used ability until I could get back to town and RP that I've learned it somewhere, but I digress.

You could say your RP piece and then send a tell with the level. i.e.

I am a bit green, but I know how to hold my blade pretty well.

tell://I'm level 6 dude.

There really isn't any reason to think of a way to announce your level in the RP world. They can guage your power through the character info screen if they need to know how powerful you are compared to them (which also takes some fun out of RPing, but that was Bioware's stupid decision). If they need to know your level for something like a level restriction on an item, that restriction is an ooc restriction anyway, so it should be asked ooc through a tell.

Something kind of off topic, but I should be able to take up a prc when I level this time if the DM's let me. I was given some names of people that are that class so do I need to seek them out and ask for training before I can level up in that class? Or can just level up?

First, you must have an RP reason for wanting to take a PrC. They are there to show that your character has trained hard to reach a special level of a certain ability.
Second, you must resubmitt your characters Bio including the new information that will allow him/her to take the PrC levels. If it's approved then you are good to go.
It's usually a good idea to starting keeping a journal about the PrC (ie: learning how to sneak better for shadow dancer, learning more about necromancy for a pale master) for a few weeks before you intend to take the levels. Then resubmit your bio with a link to the journal and that will give the GMs more of a reason to approve you. Either way you must get reapproved before you can level in a PrC.

For me, I would say something like:
"What the...I feel different, alot...stronger..."
"Ive learned something new!"

(Im a wizard necro, just waiting for my character to be accepted)

You could always go with, "You know, I've always thought that dogs... lay eggs... and I've learned something today."

I have always found the "seasons" terminology insincere. If you say I am level 7 whats the difference from saying I have 7 seasons?

Rping would indicate something along the lines of explaining what experiences you have had over the years and if its related to resting to level or an Item level restriction , I think a tell with ooc information as needed is best suited.

Every time someone asks Yardislan how many seasons, I laugh inwardly and he tells them that he probably measures time much differently from how they, as less long-lived races, do.

Every time someone uses the term seasons I cringe.  Honestly, if you need to know my character's level, compare CRs, check the server stats page, or just send a tell.  I'm more likely to give a straight answer to a tell than some awkward RP convention for an OOC concept.  Its not something I consider to be IC information.

A lot of people feel the same way.

Acacea doesn't know what levels are, she thinks epic characters need her protection.

Yeah, the whole seasons thing is really annoying. Just send them a tell or something.

On actually leveling up, I find the easiest way to RP it is to say, "Hey! I just had a REALLY good idea! Hold on, let me think about it for a sec." For Berris, or for Sargon, I just whip out my spellbook and start scribbling frantically. Seems to work well.

the only thing in-character about seasons is >if< the character happens to have been in a military as a soldier's prowess, pay, and overall seniority has to do with the number of seasons they were in the services of said military.  (as a season in the armies of old was not a full year, as most campaigns only lasted from spring to fall, the winter being difficult to maneuver and house troops).  As such, an ex-soldier can compare his years as a freeblade to fighting seasons in his former military.

Couldn't one's character just say something like:

"I've had little experience in this world."

OR

"I've had a lot of experience in this world."

It's all about experience and experience shouldn't be a word that's avoided while roleplaying should it?

One can always say that they lack sufficient wisdom for a venture, let's say, Dregar without some more seasoned wisdom.
Saying wisdom just implies lack of practical application for existing knowledge or skill.
Find that it works best.
