When your character is looking for Holy Water (for example for scribing inks), you may want to consider to ask what deity has blessed it to make it holy and then make your character wonder if you want to be associated with that deity.
-
Very good point Ed.
Sago has actually used this same idea to steal holy water making business away from Chanda. He mentioned to the buyer that he may not wish to have holy water tainted by an evil god and would be much better off with my holy water.
-
Also, when making holy water, think about if the temple you're doing it in is appropriate. If it's a temple that your deity isn't at least friendly or allied with will certainly kick you out before you can desecrate their Holy Pool.
Also, your deity probably doesn't like it that you're not devoted enough to come to his/her own temple and do it there.
-
Does someone want to double check the temples and make sure they all have enchanting pools then. I am pretty much certain the temple of Mist in Leilon doesn't have one.
-
Not all temples may be able to afford it. The holy water font is an incredibly expensive piece. Perhaps if your local temple doesn't have one, you could donate some coin to help them...?
In P&P the font is around 10000 gold for a large one if I remember. Its been a while since I had to look. Needless to say, they are expensive. And not all temples can afford it.

There is a post on the trade and market hall for Chanda to sell holy water. Case and point Ed, we all know who Chanda serves...
-
Well, besides this thread seeming like a bash on Chanda. Let me make a few comments about the thoughts posted above.
Not all characters are going to care about where they get their alchemy supplies from. Especially a Nuetrally aligned mage who wants to make his inks, heck a desperate CG mage might not care. If it matters to you where you get your holy water then by all means don't buy it from Chanda. Same goes with healing potions or anything else I might sell. I don't post my wares up on the board, but I will respond to others needs. Here again, don't want to sell or buy from me that's fine.
As for the usage of holy pools in temples, if you are only allowed to use pools in favor with your diety then your basically saying only certain characters are allowed to gain skills in enchanting. Last I looked there aren't any Nuertal to Evil churches on Mistone. So basically you are putting restrictions on who can do certain skills. This is fine if this is the way the GMs want it. I have complied with the GMs requests in the past.
So following this logic here are the following deities that would not be welcomed to the Holy Pool of Ilsare.
Unfriendly: Rofirein, Dorand, Katia
Enemy: Pyrtechon, Vorax, Shadon, Branderback, Corath, Aragen, Baraeon Ca'Duz, Sulterio, Vierdri’ira, Grand
-
I never saw chanda mention her deity even once, so if she attempts to sell me as far as i know its ok:p
im not sure how sago knows or how the temple priest would know either!
-
There is a temple of Branderback in Pranzis, a temple of Deliar in Port Hampshire (and Deliar is enemy to more good than evil gods) a temple of Mist in Leilon, a temple of Shadon in Port Hampshire, a temple of Xeen in Karthy. All except Deliar are neutral or evil.
If they do not have an enchanting pool, well then get to donating!
Just a small question though ... assuming there are enchanting pools in temples of Aragen, would Aragen care who used them if the holy water was being used to persue knowledge?
-

Nope, knowledge is used by all. Progressing knowledge is done by all.

There is a temple of Shadon or something in Port Hampshire.

Sago, like many others knows because Chanda is very blatant about who she worships, just talk to her. Especially during the red fog incidents when she danced in the fog and called on the power of Corath. Um, little clue there.
Just as Sago is very blatant about serving Lucinda, Chanda is about Corath.
But, having said all that, then yes, if your character doesn't know then it would be fine for you, but if your character is one that would care, it wouldn't hurt to ask.
-
Also, it seems chanda would try and make it where she can. I have seen her in disguise more than once. So if she is in disguise we wouldn't know what god she served. And, Cole watched her heal some friends, and him I believe, so he has a small reason to sell/buy to or from. The blasted Corathites helped us stop the red fog incedent, so to my character...well, lets just say the drow have topped the hatred list.
And Aragon, I am thinking this thread wasn't meant to be a bash on Chanda. it seems you are just the one who all remember. And you all play your char so well that that you stick in our minds as Chanda, the follower of Corath. But like I said, in disguise you are someone selling needed supplies.

Right, I just go like this. Buying holy water..... I don't care who I get it from as long as I get it. (Paladins and devout clerics would probably be more strict) Temples, I'll enter almost all of em, with the exception of a few (unless I have good reason). Ie: Ilsare, the goddess who's child Ca'duz slaughtered. Well that's kinda a no brainer, I don't go there. I'd say clerics could be a bit loose as to which temple they enter and buy from, however I would say enemies of your god, are probably not going to want a cleric of that god hanging around. :)

I assure you that it was not meant that way at all, Aragon.

Correct, that's why I wrote it the way I did, that you should think if your character wants to be associated with the deity that blessed the water. If he doesn't care, it doesn't matter whom he buys it from.
Not really, as mentioned by several people above there are temples to neutral gods on Mistone or Rilara (so at least on the West server). In your case, you could go to the temple of Mist in Leilon, granted it doesn't have a pool at the moment but anonimous donations might work.
So following this logic here are the following deities that would not be welcomed to the Holy Pool of Ilsare. Unfriendly: Rofirein, Dorand, Katia Enemy: Pyrtechon, Vorax, Shadon, Branderback, Corath, Aragen, Baraeon Ca'Duz, Sulterio, Vierdri’ira, Grand
Correct.
As to the priests of a temple not knowing what god you worship if you just walk into the temple and use their pool. They would definitely ask who you are and would hear your prayers as the water was blessed so they'd find out :)
-
I agree with Ed ... disguises wouldn't hide a black heart. Thanks for the posts above about several nuetral temples, I had forgotten about those. BTW Chanda never danced in the fog, that would be the Ghost Pirate that did that. I worshiped it and yes at times I am very open about whom I serve .. ask Kobal ;)
Ed could a holy pool be purchased outright by anyone ... say I wanted my own personaly pool to Corath, could I purchase one?

I'll leave that to Leanthar.
-
Hmmmm I think I will need to make a returnn trip to the Temple of Lucindas to find out if there is one there. Could make my scribing a bit difficult if there isn't.
-
Yes there is one for lucinda in the blackford castle. ;)
-
Ok I have done some investigation into temples on Mistone. Which incidently was the main point of my original post.
Hlint - Ilsare
Fort Llast - Toran
Leilon - Mist
Port Hampshire - Deliar, Shandon
Blackford Castle - Lucinda
Fort Velenske - Rofirein
Looking at the relationships between Corath and each of these temples, there is only one that an enchanter of Corath could use. That is Mist, I have confirmation from the big L in the sky that coming soon to the temple of Mist is a Holy Pool. Clerics of Mist and Corath rejoice we are back in business.
-
you forgot the following
Seilwood Forest- Aeridin
High Forest- Katia
Spell Gaurd- Lucinda
-
yes I did ... but those don't count anyways ;)
Though I wouldn't reccomend anyone trying to use the pool in Spellguard right now.
-
For RP sake, I am wondering...shouldn't or wouldn't a paladin or cleric be able to feel the taint of the dark side? Were some evil to handle a flask of LG created water, would they smell it? Likewise, my perception of a Toranite handling a flask created for/by Corath would have the evil sickening feeling?
This was my point. We can play market dynamics, and ignore it (which was a great point about Neutral scibers made by Aragon), or do we address the concept of divine power in the water lends itself to a side in the struggle.
Could Toran holy water be used in the ink to scribe an animate undead scroll, for example?
-
I agree with you on this. The commoner or common adventurer would not be able to tell the difference between a Toran or Corath Holy Water in an unmarked container. But a paladin or cleric intune with their god most definately would feel an inclination one way or another ... they may not know the origin but I would think an item blessed by Corath would give off a negative aura.
"Could Toran holy water be used in the ink to scribe an animate undead scroll, for example?"
I think the problem here is that all holy water ingame looks the same. It is not feasible to have coding in place that looks at the holy water and determines if it was made by a Corath worshipper. The key issue here is the RP and how much is a person willig to RP the situation? The issue rests with the individual, there is no way to enforce how the holy water is used. But I would question why a scriber who is a devout of Toran or Aeridin is even making a animate dead scroll.

Couldn't agree more.

Corath water would be like unholy water, filled with dead fleas, moldy and with a squirrel's skull bobbing. Who knows, if you opened the cork, you'd probably hear a bunch of crying dead babies or such.
Xeenite holy water would pretty much be anything over 120 proof that made you see double. :)
-
I disagree, because Corathite holy water is would still be used in cure potions. Holy water from the Roman Calothic church isn't any different than holy water from another church. Just blessed for a certain faith.
-
Totally disagree with that last one. Corath holy water could heal evil and such, but would do illness or damage to good. Just as Toran holy water would damage undead and heal good. Neutral, to your point, could probably go either way.
And as usual, a quibble point, but I mentioned Toranite holy water being used for an animate dead scroll, and the immediate question was, why? It was just used to illustrate a point. A Corath cleric would not use Toran holy water to scribe the scroll, as an alternative example.
Holy water from a Catholic church is not just the same as holy waters from other churches. The sanctifying by different organizations and the beliefs of power are totally different across the board. And what about blessed water from pagans, wicca, or satanic organizations? I tire.
-
It is a good point that to followers of one faith or the other, holy water blessed under one religion is not the same as holy water blessed under another. Even within our real-life religions, there's plenty of...rivalry (for lack of a better word) between different sects of what amounts (ultimately) to the same religion. But I think it's important to note that it's different to those who are faithful. To them, there's an important difference.
In game, a Toranite may not want to accept holy water from a Corathite, thinking it unclean, unpure or even unholy. And I think there are plenty of really good RP reasons to refuse holy water from an unliked or enemy diety.
BUT, in the end, all holy water is blessed by a god of the Layonara pantheon, which makes it, by definition, holy. To a Corathite, their holy water is...well...holy, not unholy. And in the game context, it works the same (i.e. can still be used for potions, will still cause damage to undead, etc.) as holy water from Ilsare, Toran, Vorax or Lucinda.
So mechanically speaking, there's no real difference. BUT, I don't see a reason why characters wouldn't (and shouldn't) refuse holy water from a rival or enemy diety....especially not clerics and paladins. For good RP, this only makes sense. Others, however, may not care where it comes from. It was blessed through the follower of a god...and that's enough.
Having said all this, it would be kind of cool if there were different holy waters for each diety, but I fully recognize that such a system would be probably too complex.
-
I also believe that Holy water can come in various shape, color and taste. I think of R.A. Salvatore's saga with Drizzt and Bruenor, at one point Bruenor is looking for another "head" cleric and he actually taste each contender's holy water to see which one has the best taste (or alchool :) )
Each diety has it's own definition of what is holy water and I would think that races too may have some preferences. Maybe vampire holy water would be blessed blood...
just my .02 cents...
-
Woah! .02 cents?! Man all this time I've been chipping 2 cents in and now I find that people are giving fractions of cents... *sighs* Talks about stingy.
