why are there so few paladins
pallys are the best in every game ive ever played that had apllys in them
-
there is not few paladins really.. I have seen pretty many of them..
Well to comment what you think is "cool", so yes paladin is a cool class, but it has to played properly to..
Thinking about paladins in Diablo2 :P right..paladins.. Just wandering around butchering things..
-
diablo 2 is a great game and i dont see many pallys i see 2 at the most on at one time and that only when like 30 somethin people are playin
-
I have seen way more paladin's than that.. Just wait and see ;)
-
Thats because here paladins also carry the RP luggage and that usually turns a lot of players of. Its not just about being good at bashing things in Layonara, trust me, the life of a paladin here is one that very few can withstand.
-
i just got my pally approved and im goin start playin this afternoon and im pretty sure i can withstand alot of the stuff sincei dont really have anything else to do

Indeed they do.. And isn't that good? More RP, better the class and char :)

As someone who plays a paladin I truly believe they are the most difficult characters to role play correctly. I still have trouble really trying to bring out what I'd like to see Michaelis as and there are numerous situations where the experiance that may be gained from an adventure is great, but you can not attend because it violates a code you swore. Personally at this point you may not see Michaelis because unless there's a DM quest he'll probably be at his god's temple praying or role playing somewhere. The "lets go and hunt some giants" thing he'll probably refuse everytime unless there's a good cause. He can't do things a simple fighter can because he's bound to a certain set of codes and for many players this can get very frustrating and even sometimes rather boring if they hope to just gain levels and loot - oh and paladins don't just loot and sack every creature they've killed. If they do they donate a share to their respective temple...but *shrugs* meh...I'm just blabbering now.
-
I seen you play Michaelis and you have done great.. And for the hunting, there is allways a good reason for hunting I think.. I mean what about the undeads? Souls put to rest.. The giants, well they are a huge threat to velensk and shoufal for example...
You are right about the codes of the paladins, but it's a bit hard to get some levels without hunting at all..
-
i plan to hunt alot of undead

Is that really what you are here for? You looking forward to carving out your character and playing him? Just wondering..
-
muaddib,
Please slow down!
1) This is an RP server. It is not about hunting a lot of undead. Your approved character is a Paladin and I really hope you can RP it. Some (quite a few really) of your posts has me concerned that you think hack and slash and RP are nearly the same. Please prove me wrong. 2) Use capitalization and punctuation when posting. 3) When posting please make sure you are posting intelligently and not just posting to post.
-
i know the difference
-
Hey whats the deal with the star things under the amount of posts youve posted.
Whay are they different colors and amounts mean.
-
oops..
The last 2 were me i got loged out somehow.

Ah, but doesn't a paladin have a duty to destroy evil when he/she encounters it? That's a big reason that I dual-classed to Champion. A Champion is supposed to actually seek out evil. Thus, I have a reason to accompany a group to clear out the Berhagens. Not that Klaug is all about hack 'n slash. I find much more enjoyment in RP and crafting. And don't forget, this IS an RP world.
My difficulty in RPing a paladin comes in two flavors:
1: Finding a good reason to loot. Paladins are supposed to live meager lives. But let's face it, you need coins to survive here (ship papers, upgrading weapons/armor, eventually a house (actually should be a stronghold, but I don't think that is available yet ;) )
2: Interacting with PCs whose deity is either unfriendly toward or an enemy of Toran. Should I accompany them on a quest? Should I transact business with them? Should I talk with them at all? Probably not, but then I probably would miss out on a lot of what Layonara has to offer.
That said, if I have the wrong idea of what a paladin/champion should be, please tell me. If I am misguiding future paladins, please delete this post.
-
And what i mean by hunting alot of undead is i plan to jion Torans Order of the Shining Hand. And i plan to become Undead Slayer/Pally so pretty much any quest that deals with undead Kharl(name of my character) will jion in if he has time.

Just so you know muaddib, Layonara is a very fair place so none of this is meant as an insult and we're not trying to shoot you down or drive you away. Currently, you're coming off as someone who gets the basics of the classes and races and is looking to make a powerful character. I'm sure however that you can RP as all it really is, is taking on the personallity of your character and reacting to situations as your character would. Please take the time to look through some of these links.
The very bottom link is about Paladins and their Oaths. You'll see it is to be taken seriously. The second to the bottom is the Server Rules (just common sense stuff). Next is a list of links to a bunch of different player resources. And the top one will show you what's up with the Stars. Good luck. ZV-

Cool thx that star thing was gettin me confused.
-
Whats the big gold star beside my name for.
-
The gold start next to your name indicates that you are logged on... It really helps you when you see it next to other names in various posts as you can see the other people are logged on as you are reading through posts etc.
-
Both approaches are dead on.
"1: Finding a good reason to loot. Paladins are supposed to live meager lives. But let's face it, you need coins to survive here (ship papers, upgrading weapons/armor, eventually a house (actually should be a stronghold, but I don't think that is available yet)"
Finding a good reason to loot isn't necessarily that difficult - The coins are needed for the tasks specified and even a paladin needs to eat. And while this point is common sense - to run around looting everything you killed for the sake of gaining wealth is not "paladin like", but there will be situations such as during a DM quest whereby one of the quest characters offers a reward - as a paladin it may be more honorable to tell the character to donate the reward to the local temple.
2: Interacting with PCs whose deity is either unfriendly toward or an enemy of Toran. Should I accompany them on a quest? Should I transact business with them? Should I talk with them at all? Probably not, but then I probably would miss out on a lot of what Layonara has to offer.
I think this one depends on the diety, but for the most part interaction in many cases is warranted and necessary. I don't think there's anything wrong with a Toranite interacting with a Lucindite - The characters go on quests together all the time - the nature of the quest in many cases holds presidence - for example - the major plot quest now with Bloodstone - there is really no in game reason why a lucindite and a toranite can not travel together given the situation. There may be some animosity however and it should be RP'd as such. Perhaps I'm mistaken, the fueds of the gods hold great weight that should be evident in the worshippers - it requires a delicate way to RP.
By the way, I remember long ago there was a really nice post on how to play a paladin - I suppose I could do a search for it but I'm lazy at this moment...that would be a good read for any future and current paladins.
EDIT: I think the post was by Wolf Token (not sure though)
-
Speaking of Paladins. Now I'm not looking to make one, nor am I looking for this to explode. Now I know the rule about starting off evil and I'm not heading down that road. But, I was wondering if someone was wanting to play say a paladin of pyrtechon could it be done?
-
That would be more like a blackguard, so you'd either have to be a fallen paladin turned blackguard or an evil fighter/whatever who became a blackguard. Just saying how it would be possible, the chance of any of these things happening to a PC on layo is rather slim.
-
I think it was Ghost who posted that the Blackguard class is reserved for NPC characters.
-
nah, its just called Unholy Champion of Pyrtechion/Corath. And while no one has ever become one of those classes and it would be difficult, It would be possible I believe. I know of one character who almost became one before a fork in the development took the character in a different direction.
-
Pretty sure the Paladin's name was Wolv not Wolf. Also as long as we're on the subject I'd say the toughest classes to RP are Paladins and Druids, but the hardest to "play" are Rogues. (And not you Fighter/Rogue stinkers... Note: That was a generalization and I still like you all ;))
-
Yes a half-orc paladin with rather good skill using Halberds with different enchantements. His name was Wolv Toklin.
And I agree now it has been made hard for druids and Paladins to play since they have to rp all about their gods not interacting well with others and all that jazz.
-
I miss Brastias and Wiscoin; they were WICKED at playing pally back on LOA. Murat! Next time you're in the campus lab, tell Mike to get his butt into gear and remake Brastias! We need SOMEBODY immune to lycanthropic diseases so that Lonn doesn't get infected again, spreading wererat filth through all the sewers again! :)
-
I never thought of makin a half-orc pally. That could work out good.
Is there a half-gaint class in layo.
-
Oh I remember Wiscoin from LoA...I used to play an elvin ranger there Quicksilver/Earadril...Wis was a great paladin...I'm sure Brastius was as well.

aye, I still miss my old bardarian Zigfried Glammoroth. Half orcs more than make up for the lack in looks with their battle capabilities. We also have both half-giant and half-ogres, their stats should be in the races section on this site and in the handbook download. There are also only a few gods that sponsor paladins, which I think is listed in the character submission section in one of the stickies at the top of the page.
And aye, I remember Quicksilver! You'll be happy to know that this time around, Lonnarin is pure ranger, so he won't be shooting fire arrows near yer blast radius anymore! ;)
-
Cool since there are half-gaints i think ill make my next character a half-gaint pally or wizard
-
Good plan. I suggest being descended from a fire or an ice giant with some of the physical characteristics, as they are almost always lawful and the other giant types are almost always chaotic. I think we also have a feat for cold or fire resistance if you really want to play it up. ;) (Bloodline of Fire we may have too as a 1st lvl feat, not certain)
-
Actually server rules: Half-Giant must be non-lawful.
No Half-Giant Paladins and no Half-Giant Monks.
-
straight from the race page for half-giant...
Alignment:
"Half-giants are as diverse as humans in alignment. Few, however, fall into the extremes of Lawful Good or Chaotic Evil; instead they are usually somewhere in between, tending to the chaotic"
it's Half-OGRES who must always be chaotic. Considering that Fire giants, Ice Giants and a few other types are LE, Half-Giants should be able to achieve lawful so long as they adopt the heritage of one of the lawful subtypes. They should also try to take the feat elemental resistance for the element of origin though.
A half Hill-Giant certainly wouldn't be able to be lawful, or storm or rock, etc.
Also, Grannoch does not sponsor paladins, so a paladin half giant would have to likely subscribe to Vorax, Toran, Rofirein or some other paladin lovin god.
-
Yes, that is what part of the handbook says and it is true of half-giants as a whole. But the subset of half-giants that are playable, must be non-lawful. You'll notice further in the handbook in the summary of racial abilities it says "Must be Chaotic." This was later changed and updated on the website under the races section to be "Must be Non-Lawful" so a cleric of Grannoch can exist.
Don't quote half of something to back up your point. ;)
-
I'm not going by the handbook, just by what the races section of the forum says...
"Religion: Those raised by humans tend to favor Vorax."
Vorax is LN. Why would a lawless race love a man of pure law?
plus the "Full range" thing opens all alignments. We need an official GHost/Leanthar opionion on this I think. Too many contradicting bylines in the source material.
-
Hes got you there v.
So i should make a fire half-gaint pally.Ya that sound cool.
-
He doesn't "have me there."
He is going by the descriptive portions of the write ups. For character creations you have to go by the mechanics portions and the the mechanics portion of the handbook clearly says "Must be chaotic" and since the handbook is slightly out of date the only contradiction is the mechanics section of the website clearly says "Must be non-lawful."
You can get Leanthar or anyone else to chime in, but the fact of the matter is, there are none, and will never be any playable half-giants that are lawful unless the rule is relaxed again at a future time.
If you create a half-giant palladin, I guarantee you that it will not be approved and you will be told to pick a different class and alignment or pick a different race.
-
What vgn stated, he is correct.
And please quit using the name 'pally'.
-
The thing about the non-lawful half-giant I think is that the playable half giants are half hill giant. There are lots of types of giants of different alignments. A lot of them have a lawfull bent, that is probably why the giant god is lawful. however a half-frost giants or half-fire giants are not playable only half-hill giant. Thats why the information seems to contradict itself.
Also, a half-giant paladin makes very little sense.
-
besides, -6 int and -6 charisma?
To paraphrase someones signature here losely "what diety wants a stupid ugly person as thier avatar." or something like that. And well... it just doesn't make much sense, I think all the half-monster races are restricted like that (-orc -ogre -giant) with thier alignment.
Vyris
-
lol! if you have a negative cha does your lay on hands hurt yourself and heal undead?
Edit:edited for stupid typo
-
it reverts to minimum 1 hp per level Talan
as to a halfgiant paladin of vorax that doesn't make much sense really, why would a dwarven diety have a paladin decended from a race that dwarves have such emnity against that they actualy train to fight them (hence the dwarf combat bonuses vs giants
-
awesome. We should update the "alignments" section of that race page to match this so it's not so confusing in the future. That whole "free range as humans" line completely threw me off. :)
I would also presume that Talan's theory that they are all hill giant descended would also be correct, else they would begin with elemental DR options and such; and the fact that only a hill giant would have such a low cha and int to make a halfbreed human attain -6 to mental stats.
I think Fire and Ice giants are at least on par with half-orc intelligence if I remember correctly, so it makes sense that the playable variety of halfbreeds would need to come from slower stock.
-
*smacks himself in the forehead* you know, I didn't even notice the bottom part of the race page this whole time... heheheh.
yup, it's right there, no lawful giants :)
-
Also, Vorax's alignment is LG, not LN. ;)
