Title: Use of Internet Lingo and "l33tspeak"
Post by: Talan Va'lash on May 27, 2005, 03:58:00 PM
Quote from the Server Rules:

"Use of Internet Lingo and "l33tspeak"

Layonara is a world all about RP, and players should remember to refrain from using what has come to be known as "l33tspeak". Use of such lingo really serves to detract from the overall immersion of the environment and world for other players involved, and can be a real headache at times. For instance, it would be quite jarring to be in the middle of an epic quest and return to town to see someone using l33t. The effect is more often than not annoying to most players, but for many it can be downright offensive. Take the time to play your character and immerse yourself in the world, since it makes it that much more enjoyable for all involved. In addition, most GMs find it especially frustrating when the chat windows are flooded by reams of lingo while they are in the middle of planning a quest or event. This is of course by no means asking all players to speak using "thee" and "thou", but everyone should remember that no one would use language such as "plz" and "ph4t lewt" even in real life. Again, use your common sense!"

This goes for using np, ty, cya and such in character as well.  These are fine to use in tells and the occasional OOC comment, but they are not IC.  I have seen a trend of these things being used more and more frequently, and even spoken to players about it and many of them continue to use it.

Please dont.  Its in the Server Rules.

Talan is 100% correct on this post.  Please do not use that stuff.  Every once in a while is okay but keep it well under control as it is not roleplaying and it is jarring to the immersion level of the world.
You can use them in tells if you wish and the receiver of the tell does not mind it but if asked to stop then it is your responsibility to stop.

Gee whiz...Nobody gives Klaug more grief than Gulnyr.  *mumbles* hinting that Klaug is a book-burner, harrumph!

I know, I know...*grumble*

//;) For the record, I am NOT accusing Gulnyr of griefing, he's just being an older brother type.

I used to not mind this so much until I noticed it happening all over the place.  The other day I was around Hlint and someone was asking if anyone had a 20 or higher intelligence.  It does detract from the experience.  If you have to ask something ooc then a tell would be so much better than blurting it out.

Thanks for bringing this back up Talan.

Gnome: "Here is an item full of information."
Klaug: "Can we destroy it?"

You had that book-burning comment coming.  Your first reaction to the box of plans was to bash it.

Imagine what it would be like if Gul had a Charisma lower than 8...
