Title: A guy named William Schnoebelen ranting about the evil that is D&D
Post by: OmegaZERO on June 05, 2005, 09:32:00 PM
Some of you may not find this quite as funny as I do, but this guy's blatant lies
(in my opinion... ex: http://www.chick.com/information/authors/schnoebelen.asp " Through much travel and also trance channeling, they came in contact with supposedly high "Spiritual Masters" (both physical and astral beings), who told them that different currents of power were necessary to totally fulfill them as authentic seekers on the Path of Wisdom.")
have me laughing my butt off.

*rifles through his 1st Ed. rule books for details on these rituals*

*finds nothing*

*makes some comment about his deeply religious D&D-playing friends*

*adds the author to his "Misguided Moron" list*

Oh man, Chick! Read his Bible Tract Comic things. They're freaking hilarious. I read one on how Freemasons are actually worshipping Satan, disguised as the "Divine Architect", who is actually the Baphomet. This Freemason worshipping the Baphomet causes much evil to overcome his family, as his son gets in a nearly fatal car accident. But wait! The evil Freemason turns to Jesus, and all is saved! *coughloadofcrapcough*

Hehe, few things I'm gonna say that I think are pretty interesting...
[list=1]
I think this guy was probably dropped on his head as a child, and fell off his rocker some time between wanting to be a priest at the age of 5, and heading into the "church of satan" just a guess though. ;) Really really hope my mom doesn't get a hold of something like this...
Funny how many parents and adults say "kids are so impressionable, they shouldn't be allowed to play with this stuff" then they go and read one article and take everything in there as fact.  O_o Anyway, I'm out... gotta go pick up my Enchanted Yew Staff from Grobble Gunker at the thrift shop. ;)

Hmmmm! I find these sort of people mildly disturbing; if not a little sad. While everyone is entitled to their beliefs, I am often amazed at the lengths some will go to to gain recognition and publicity.

*Crosses this guys name off of his Chistmas card list*

LIGHTNING BOLT!

*Looks up*  Aww it's old now...

Someone post that link, it's hilarious...

Anywho, for the record, I am an ordained minister, and I play tons of D&D, so don't read too much into this.  My words of wisdom are as follows:

       "Moderation is the key."

Seriously.  As long as there is balance and you don't let a single thing take over your life, you're doing good.

The best way to shut the religious fanatics up is to take their religion and research all of the polytheistic influences behind it.  Show them how all the extraplanar servants and opponents of their have the exact same names of ancient gods predating the advent of their own religion, particularly names reoccurring from the ancient Sumerian texts.  The feuds between the ancient gods Ennlil and Enki account for the vast majority of modern religions' tales.

The same holds true for D&D campaign setting deities for the most part: Baal, Tiamat, Bahamut, Nergal, Myrkul etc. found in the texts of Egyptians, Akkadians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Hittites and Hebrews.  Beshaba for example, was originally the wife of King David who seduced his empire into ruin.  Therein lies some truth to fuel their accusations of D&D conflicting with their religion.  They see a name of a D&D god and remember when it was used as a defamatory being in their own religion... but seldom do they dig further to realize how many of the beings proposed in their religions did the same by pulling the names of gods from other religions. (Demons: Lucifer, Mammon, Barbatos, Beelzebuth, Moloch etc. as well as Angels: Asmodel/Asmoday, Hanael, Barchiel, Sammuel/Sammael, Anniel(Ennlil!) )  Furthermore, the hierarchy of the heavens is based off the zodiac, numerology and several other "unworldly heathen" sources.

How do I know this?  I am a rogue Nephilim hellbent on the destruction of the great Annunaki conspiracy.  The biggest secret of all is that the angels are really aliens breeding us for cattle/labor, and that the demons are really angels freeing us from the earth.  The gods are merely persons further up in the hierarchy that issue their workers orders with how to handle us.

Why else would self-denial and law be so venerated if not to subjugate a population to obey its masters?

Never trust a man who commands you not to think or question your own morals.  Whether its a preacher, politician, teacher, coach or parent; self-realization and exploration of truth is vital to spiritual/moral/biological/intellectual evolution. (hence why the "Light/truth-bringer is the most demonized of all their foes)

There is what I said...

I'm still wondering where that quote came from...  since I completely reject wicca I could never be a witch, and I've never tried to get into a Freemason Lodge.  Just another unsolved mystery I suppose.

Oh, already pm'd lonnarin about it but I feel a bit responsible for this. I wanted to quote the witchgeek so I quoted lonnrin but forgot to change names. The quote is from the website.... from the geek.

Seriously this guy has issues and by the look of it, he enjoys his own little fantasy world where everyone who doesnt follow his thinking is EVIL. Talk about being out of touch with reality.

i was at a gameing convention in LA a few months ago playing a PVP game. We were taking a launch when some kid about 10 or 12 er somthing walks up and asks somthing about a bone wand of frost. I belive he asked where could one find a bone wand of frost or how to craft one. So the DM's kinda explained how he could make a bone wand of frost like IG, but we were all rather confused on what this kid was talking about. But then i belive he asked somthing like, where can i find the bone (being human bone) and we were all confused once again. So they started kinda messing with him and told him that he could go to a church and go into the alter, which they said had a small chunk of jessus bone or somthing. then he could put saphirese(however its spelt) into the stone some how. ANYWAY, he walked off and we all looked at one another in shock. we could not figure if he was speeking of IG or RL. Strange looking nerdy kid, should have got an signiture, might be worth somthing when he gose nuts and kills people.

Did anyone hear about that woman who sued the D&D guys (I guess) about the game making her son commit suicide? Apparently, they did some research and found out that D&D players were statistically LESS LIKELY to commit suicide. This was in the 80s, I think.

Unfortunately...  there are close minded people who would believe this loon...

That cartoon was unbelievable.  LOL...  I also found it interesting that it was all women in the strip that were influenced by D&D. . . and it was men saving the girl from evil.  I wonder what he is really trying to say...   It totally contradicts his list of suicide victums who were all male. . .

Seems like I remember something in history about burning books...  now where was that?

Of course you have to give him props... if anyone knows about brainwashing...  it's religious fanatics =P
The all time King of brainwashing =P

http://wayofthemaster.com/

Seriously... you have to check this... LOL  it's even interactive =D

If you are a Christian you can click YES and go to a page that tells you how to save your friends and family from the burning pit hell...   ummm by buying his tape library...

If you are not a Christian you can click NO and go to a page that tells you how to save yourself from hell...   ummm by buying his tape library...

The site is so wholesome and cheesy it makes the Ozmonds seem like the Ozbornes

LOL  I remember showing this to my wifey and she was like... Is this a joke?  LOL and what makes it funny... is that it isn't a joke LOL!!!

Enjoy!

So. . . if the rituals are real. . . all I have to do is sit down with my PHB for the next eight hours and memorize the spell entry for Finger of Death and I can kill someone by reciting it?  Sweet!

PsychicToaster, I'm afraid it's not that simple.

I mean don't forget the spellcomponent. :)

I mean people try it and it fails and stop believing in it, don't they realize they should have taken the feat eschew materials first? :D

"D&D is not like chess or Monopoly. It is a game that engages the whole person at deep levels, and it can last months if well-played."

I have played games of monopoly that took months. Is that evil too? Does that mean that I am being brainwashed into becoming a real estate tycoon?

And I don't know about you guys, the D&D games that I have played never got all that serious. We kind of sit around, make fun of each other, and eat a lot of snacks. That must be why it's so fun!

Found some interesting stuff about this at wikipedia.org:

"Beyond lawsuits, greater controversies have surrounded D&D due to allegations of its connections to devil worship, as well as claims that RPGs in general lead to suicide. These allegations were popularized in a novel called Mazes and Monsters by Rona Jaffe. The book was turned into a TV movie featuring a young Tom Hanks in the key role of a mentally unstable collegian who experiences psychotic episodes and loses himself in the game world. It should be noted that the allegations in the book and film were based on faulty interpretation of William Dear's 1979 investigation. Dear, a private investigator, searched for a wealthy college student, James Dallas Egbert III. While the search proved successful, the brilliant and depressed boy committed suicide after a quarrel with his wealthy, domineering father. Dear later wrote The Dungeon Master: The Disappearance of James Dallas Egbert III [5] written from case notes. The author described his own experiences learning D&D, as a key to understanding Egbert's withdrawal from reality. Dear also makes it implicitly clear that Egbert's suicide had more to do with family troubles than with roleplaying games. [6]

"One of the big names in the anti-D&D movement was Patricia Pulling. Pulling founded Bothered About Dungeons and Dragons (BADD), a one-person organization, after her son (Irving "Bink" Pulling) committed suicide which she believed was from playing the famous RPG Dungeons & Dragons. Pulling wrote Interviewing Techniques For Adolescents (1988), a primer for police officers who are dealing with crimes that involve role-playing games. Michael A. Stackpole (himself a writer and designer of role-playing games) wrote The Pulling Report [7] in 1990 debunking Pulling's claims.

"Chick Publications produced a comic book tract called "Dark Dungeons"[8] about a girl who got involved in witchcraft through a role-playing game, and cast a spell on her father to make him buy her books and miniatures.

"Such negative portrayals of role-players, ironically, may have originated from an initial inability of some outside observers to properly differentiate between reality and the immersive role-playing aspects of game play. Misperception has been the major prejudice that role-players have had to face over the years. Some religious individuals consider roleplaying games immoral or irreligious for multiple reasons, most commonly due to game uses of magic, spells, the worship of pagan gods, the glorification of violence, and the use of supernatural powers (whose game uses are not always distinguished from reality by observers). Such accusations continued well beyond the 1980s and into the 1990s. There have been numerous studies (including several from within the RPG industry) exploring this allegation that have generally concluded that not only does D&D not seem to encourage suicide, but players of this kind of game are in fact less prone to take their own lives. For example, studies conducted by Michael Stackpole show that the suicide rate is actually lower among gamers than non-gamers.

"Often this connection is pointed out when young people are indicted for crimes, such as a 2001 murder of Robert M. Schwartz, a prominent scientist in Loudoun County, Virginia. The connection was also made during the investigation of the Stephanie Crowe murder in San Diego, where Stephanie's teenage brother and two friends were accused of the killing because prosecutors said that the killing reflected a brother's hatred of his sister and the three boys' interest in role-playing fantasy games. The three youths maintain they are innocent and a transient named Richard Tuite was later arrested, charged, and convicted of manslaughter. [9]

"The Swedish National Board for Youth Affairs has published a report on "Roleplaying as a Hobby." The report describes roleplaying as a stimulating hobby that promotes creativity. [10]"
