Title: Previous character knowledge
Post by: KageKeeper on June 19, 2005, 04:45:00 PM
One thing I wanted to point out..

If a player has more then one character, while playing the new character, he/she should not know the locations of everything or the required items needed for a quest ahead of time either.

In my mind that is meta gaming and poor RP. When a player first arrives with their first character they do not know this until they are shown around. Using OOC knowledge is not RP. Sending a tell to someone and request assistance when dead, not good RP.

Maybe it's just me. *shrug* If it is, I apologize.

That's all true, and it's sad when it happens.

Of course that you are free to explore areas that as a player you know that exist, even if your purpose is to get a certain item, and claim you were pointed out in that direction by someone... There are more people around towns than just the visible NPC's and Players. ;)

*nods* 100% correct and this should always be RP'd.

Heh, when I take my new char somewhere he hasn't been before I always rp that I get lost. Like if we are running to Hampshire, I take a right in Krandor outskirts and keep going untill someone comes and gets me.

"Hey, you...it is this way!!!"

There's a difference between knowing the quests and knowing the area. For me, it all depends on character background. If my new character comes from somewhere on Mistone and either he or his family is traveled at all, then it's not a stretch that he would know areas, and may know some better than other characters.
Likewise, if the character is from some area on Dregar, Roldem, or elsewhere, he may be quite lost on Mistone, but know the other areas quite well.

What Kagekeeper is referring to is me using OOC info. I said it was
probably bad RP to some, but I also said something like
characters aren't newborn. Meaning that things that aren't secrets
should be accepted as preknowledge if you want your character
to have it.

But of course if this is in no way accepted I will stop doing
this in the future. The exact issue was Johan's quest and my
character knowing the locations beforehand. Tasteless to most
probably, but I thought something that hundreds(characters),
maybe thousands(NPCs), know of should be considered available
knowledge.

I've not done the helmet of armor quest yet. But I've seen
several times people buying all the needed items in one batch
then finish it in one go and I've never thought twice about it.

It's not a problem for me to stop doing preknowledge, I just didn't
see it as a big deal. A whole lot of people know there are giants
in berhagen and Silent Watch(used to be).

If this is a nono playing a bard wouldn't be as much fun as it
could be. Not saying it can't be a blast without it, just that
there would be more options and chance for more fun.

Already made a char from another world who OOO:s and Aahhh:s at all
the new things. So making a character completely different to him
I thought a fun thing.

But like I said before, if it's a problem I'll adapt right away.

I was not mentioning names. :P

And you are not the only one who does it (another reason I was not mentioning names).

This post was also not about drawing attention to anyone person, more along the lines of just some friendly advice as how *I* see it. It is my opinion. Not necessarily everyones though.

It is somewhat similar in my mind as knowing a characters name cause you can see it above their head. That is similar to saying that some unkown NPC or PC may have, unbeknownst to me, pointed it out to you? I can see where that could happen a time or two, but if it was everytime it would get a bit silly. To me anyway. :)

Again, just my opinion.

That goes more or less under the forced emotes "rule" I was going to post
about some day. Meaning any information about my character have to be
given by my character directly or indirectly(I told person A, person A told
person B) for any other character to be able to know about it. So basically,
you need PCs for PC info and NPCs, PCs or a made up persona for common NPC info.

I think it was one of the worst situations to be in as a DM, that you would have players that had advance knowledge of a module or campaign prior to sitting down and actually rping. Either that, or they would sit down and rp, and then go the store and read the module or a collection of monsters already picked for the campaign.
It kind of cheapens the gaming experience for everyone.
Best thing I think would be, if you have another character, each character be treated as if it had been born to the world, and all is new.
