Title: question about hit points
Post by: Imperious on June 23, 2005, 11:37:00 AM
If this has been asked and answered in some document or thread somewhere, feel free to slap me around and point me in the right direction. I've looked a bit but haven't seen anything....

How many hit point should one expect when one levels up?  I ask because the first three levels, I received the max based on class and con. The fourth level was different (plus i had been poisoned and then my con had been increased magically, so it was all over the place), and I got less than max.

which is fine...hit points are not a main concern when playing the game (although I am fighter!)....just would like know what to expect, that's all.

Thanks!

Hit Points are based on your class. You can see which die gets rolled for each class in the NWN manual. You are a fighter so it rolls a ten-sided die and you get between 1 and 10 HP each level. The first 3, NWN always maximizes the number.
HP are further adjusted by your CON bonus or minus. If you are poisoned, it is temporary and you will get back those "lost" HP when you recover from the poison. Temporary effects like poison or jewelry don't affect that core number between 1 and 10 you get each level, so it doesn't matter if you were poisoned when you leveled up.

*looks sheepish and embarrassed*

Huh...I guess it's been a while since I played the NWN official game, because I always remembered getting the max at each level....I thought maybe there was some unique formula Layonara was using after third level....good enough...thanks!

I could be wrong, but I thought the # of HPs one got at level-up was related to the difficulty slider in some way.  Set it really easy, and you get max on all levels.  Somewhere in the middle, you max for the first few levels then roll.  After that, you roll for them and you get what you get.

Well, "officially," as far as D&D rules, and I believe NWN works this way on the "D&D hardcore" difficulty level, you automatically get max for the first level, then roll after that.

In Layonara, however, I just reached fourth level, and have recieved max hit points every level.  Whether this is the way the server's set up, or I'm just incredibly lucky so far, I have no idea at all.

I believe that it is possible to have the lowest roll possible when leveling up in Layo, like a 2, if your CON modifier is 1, or even only getting a single point of HP for a level-up... at least it once appeared on my character levelup summary. :o

Mage classes get d4+con mod.
Rogue/bard get d6+con mod.
Cleric get d8+con mod.
Warrior and subtypes get d10+con mod.
Barbarians get d12+con mod.

Level 1-3 are always max in NWN.

It's written somewhere in here... in the handbook or burried in the volumes of helpfull posts, but it works like this.

For levels 1-3
You get the max hps for your class and con bonus/penalty
-This is done to give you a decent chance of survival in the lower levels, same reason that theres no chance of death tokens and no xp/gold penalty for dying in the first several levels.

levels 5+ you roll a die determined by your class, thieves 1d6, barbarians 1d12, paladins 1d10, mages 1d4 etc. and your con modifier is either added to or subtracted from your roll.

The 'toughness' feat I believe adds +1 h.p. every level, and is retroactive, so if at 15th level you took the toughness feat you would gain +15 h.p., which has often been the magin of victory in my experience.
Adding any of your additional stat points gained at level-up to Constitution also retroactively increases your h.p. total.

Hope that helps.
