It's the day with the longest time of daylight in the year (as opposed to midwinter, which has the shortest). And it's a different day each year, but it is around this time.

Yeah, and somewhere it's celebrated, somewhere it's not.
Here in Finland it's one of our major things to celebrate... Traditions and all. And we like our summer, the winters being so cold and dark you know.

This has to do with the Summer solstice. It's the middle of Summer, thus Midsummer. Technically, the solstice occurred at about 6:30am UT on the 22nd of June this year, but Friday and Saturday seem like much better days for a celebration.
And yes, in the U.S., people tend to think of the solstice being the beginning of Summer. If you look at the astronomical reason there are seasons, you'll see that the Summer solstice is as Summer as it can get. The weather has nothing to do with it. Well, that's not quite true. The weather is influenced by the season, but it does not have anything to do with determining the season. The North Pole and Antarctica have Summer, too, but it's not really bikini weather.

Yeah, over here I don't think people celebrate the Summer/Winter Solstice... we just go for the Fourth of July... make it nice and simple. ;)
Mm... Bar-B-Q, Fire Works, Sports and Games, Picknics... ahh... the joys of summer.

Although recently it's been as hot as many a tropical country. My gollum-like skin can't handle it...
Anyway, hello everyone - new player here :)

I'm the loser from GA where its hot and muggy all year round. Temperatures range from like sixty-something in the middle of winter (during the day of course) to like 110 to 112 in the middle of the summer (during the day again). The muggy-ness just adds to it. I hate it.
