Title: I realised something wierd earlier.
Post by: Vyris on June 27, 2005, 11:43:00 PM
I am playing NwN without the CD. I didn't give it much thought at all, it fired up and played fine, my HotU CD is sitting on top of a stack right next to my monitor, and I have a DvD in the computer. I am curious, would the game search network drives for the CD, my wife has her HotU CD in her laptop right now. Thats the only thing I can think of it being.

Anyway, just thought it was kindof odd.

If you had mapped a network drive that would be picked up I expect.

Does her CD-Rom spin up when you start the game and login?

Must have been an oversigth from Bioware. Cannot believe that they would allow play without the CD.
  Interesting.....

i don't think it was an oversight, the latest update also allows multiple coppies of the same CD key to be connected at the same time

Same thing was done to Europa Universalis II (and I think other games from paradox), it seems quite common for companies that support their games for a long time after the initial release to make them playable without the CD after a few years (when I presumme only the diehard fans still play the game).

Another issue has been that some copy-protections would work fine at the release, but a few years later it turns out they don't work with new drives and/or software. For this reason I cannot play Wizardry 8 on my new computer (without using a crack). Hence companies probably cuts down complaints and support costs without affecting sales much when they remove the copy-protection.

Wish all companies would remove them in the later patches. *sighs*

I noticed this too and looked into it. Thunderpants is right, they pretty much opened it up on this release. I believe they did this because right now their monetary focus is on the premium modules. So since they have that system locked down pretty well to their satisfaction, they did a pretty nice thing and opened up the protections on the regular game so their long time users won't have to use the CD all the time.

Well gee.

It would have been nice to know this BEFORE I went and spent 40.00 on Platinum last week so my GF could get on and play...

Well, Vyris, I guess that means my hypothesis about you being extremely clever was wrong...

I think its good, I noticed too after the update you don't need a cd.  Thats good because everytime my sis plays she changes the disks and scratches it to hell.  Now I can leave the disk in its like cozy case with the other 4.
