Title: Choosing Your Trade - Who's Good At What Under CNR
Post by: Vincent on August 09, 2005, 06:42:00 PM
I'm new myself, and have never used CNR before.  I pulled the key abilities listing from the CNR documentation.  Maybe it'll help the other clueless people (like myself.)

Note: This assumes the default CNR settings.  Layonara's actual implementation may vary.  These should only be used as rough guidelines.  I know that these key abilities raise your success percentages, but I don't know by how much.

Strength-Based
Weaponcrafting - building weapons - Strength (70%), Dexterity (30%)
Armorcrafting - building metal armor - Strength (70%), Dexterity (30%)

Dexterity-Based
Gem Crafting - refining & fitting gems - Dexterity (80%), Charisma (20%)
Wood Crafting - bowcrafting & fletching - Dexterity (55%), Strength (45%)
Smelting - refining metal ores - Dexterity (75%), Strength (25%)
Tailoring - leather & clothing - Dexterity (65%), Intelligence (35%)

Wisdom-Based
Alchemy - making potions - Wisdom (60%), Intelligence (40%)
Brewing - making alchohol - Wisdom (60%), Constitution (40%)
Baking - cooking food - Wisdom (60%), Constitution (40%)

Intelligence-Based
Enchantment - magical enhancement - Intelligence (60%), Wisdom (40%)
Scribing - writing scrolls - Intelligence (50%), Wisdom (50%)
Tinkering - building tools & traps - Dexterity (50%), Intelligence (50%)

Skills I Don't Anything About:

Fishing
Magical Instrument Crafting

Poison Making

I believe if I did my math right then no matter how low your stats are you will still have a tiny chance at even the lowest level item in any craft. The only restricted tradeskills to my knowledge are-

Poison Making - By the alignment requirement on the tool
Scribing - By the requirement of spells
Infusing - Also the requirement of spells
Instruement Crafting - By class (bard)

Do any of the abilities affect how well you can dig for clay or is just random?  If I have a high strength do I get more lumps?

I dont know if having higher strength helps you dig better.  Even though i like to think so cause im supersticious.  But i do think that the higher your strength the less often you break your shovel.

I've never noticed a difference between strength scores in breaking shovels or chisels.  I think that method of harvesting is regulated mostly by Murphy's Law. ;)

I have noticed on another PW that my level of strength via spell did affect how many hits it usually took to chip off a nugget of ore. So, you may not get more, but just get it in a faster amount of time.

I have a halfling rogue who wants to specialise in woodcrafting (to make bows and arrows, mostly), but I only have str 10 (and dex 17 - probably 18 soon, though) - is my strength too low to get good at this?

The biggest problem with low strength in terms woodcrafting is the damage resistance of the trees, that makes it difficult to gather lumber unless you have power attack.

Yeah, I did manage to chop some hickory branches, but it took quite a while...

Oi, I've got something like six or sevent ranks in UMD, but I still can't use the poison extraction tool. Or at least, it's still cloaked in the red non-proficiency bit.

That's different I think. You can use the poisonmaking table, but you can't hold the poison extraction tool. Never used poison myself, so I'm not totally sure.

If you aren't holding the poison extractor tool, you can't use the poison table.

And if you can't hold...

Poison extractor takes simple weapon feat to use I think.
As for low Str Miners and Wood Crafters.Hire a fighter to gather or a mage to cast strength and Greater magic weapon on you.

Im new to Layonara and haven't had the chance to try any of the tradeskills. But I can't see your reasoning why a crafting skill should be limited by alignment.

I can see why a lawful good or neutral good character would not feel comfortable making poison, but it would be possible to roleplay. Chaotic good as far as I am concerned would have no problem creating poison of any kind, law means little and issues that poison would be "bad" would seem really silly in someone that think any action leading to a better world is a good one. So creating a dangerous poison and then pour it into the well which 5 gazzillions of evil worshippers of doom use seems like a perfectly good thing for someone that is chaotic good.

Critical Failure, you are forgetting awfully quickly that even evil communities have children and those of relative innocence.  Mass murder no matter the target race/alignment of the community is still mass murder.  I think that would even turn a chaotic good character's stomach.  Now if you are discussing an armed camp of drow bent on invading the town you are in, that to me would be a different matter.

**Edit**  Is there anywhere to find a listing of all of the possible trades that I can learn?  I wasn't sure if the starting post on this thread was an all inclusive list or not.  I am also brand new here and am trying to find a craft that would fit my character.
