Okay, not asking for locations, I want to make that clear right off .... but ...
Are there any fish in Layo bigger than the Catfish?
-
Nope. Catfish are the biggest/highest level catchable fish.
I've never really understood how fishing worked. Talan's probably level 1 or 2 in fishing and doesn't have much trouble catching any type of fish.
Are the higher level ones harder to catch?
Is it because i'm fishing with a bow? Is it because I'm an AA fishing with a bow? hehe
Or perhaps its Str/Dex based and my abilities are putting me several levels up.
I'd write a fishing guide, but I have very little idea how its implemented. Someone was fishing in hlint one day, and they started going on about how they'd just caught an axe. To this day, I have no idea whether they really caught an axe or were just RPing it. So yeah... no idea how fishing works.

I caught a throwing axe when we were testing fishing for V2

You can catch items instead of fish, random ( I think) events, as I have caught rope, boots, throwing axes, and a few other items in the past.
I must also ask, is it camping to fish? For Mr. Quinn and myself (Noss) Catfish is the only fish to catch. as a catfish gives you more (uses) and exp. I seen Mr. Quinn jump over 200 exp ahead of Noss in the last two days, and I know only two spots to catch the fine catfish, and they are not near each other. When Noss needs to supply his fish freezer (chest) he sits and catches fish all day, cooks them then takes them home for storage.
-
There is catfish available on Rilara that is two screens away from each other.
-
Yeah, I was running between those two spots ....
but yeah, considering it is a 400 gold investment, I would presume that camping fish isn't really as frowned upon as camping, say, diamonds .... but I could be very wrong.
If catfish are the largest catchable fish in the system .... then can we get more? I mean, I personally like to fish, and I like making progress on the fishing chart. I am very proud that I am one of the best fishermen on Layonara, but if there is nothing for me to catch ... well, it seems like it would be like ending the cooking trade at bread. Breadis good, but I want my proverbial pie of fishing.
Maybe have it so you can rent a boat for 1000 gold pieces or so, and go out and do ocean fishing. HAve one or two of the boats, and you have fishing/socialization areas. I already make picnics to Rilara to fish ... I think this would be cool too.
Any other fishermen out there with me on this?
-
I always wondered how grilled sahuagin would taste like.

I am with you, Zhofe. Going on a boat to catch some tuna would be a great addition. We will need a sturdier pole and stronger line, though.
I also agree with Talan on the level of difficulty with fishing. Basically, if you have a pole, line, and bait you can catch any fish no matter the level that you have obtained.

Zhofe and I were talking. Thinking that Lannisport and Fort Velensk would be good places to catch a boat for deep water fishing. At least on Mistone. On Dregar mayne North Point for the best fish around. I think Hurm is pirate water so not sure thats a good idea to take a boat out on that, could be wrong. Theres also a small dock near the desert believe it or not. :P
Anyhow, the idea's cool. Getting a group together, renting a boat for 1000 gold, fishing all day, throwing Acacea in the water. I like that. :)

I was thinking of having Whitefish outside Velensk. 30 pound or so, same as catfish. Outside Lannisport would be Tuna, 40 pound or so. Outside Northpoint would be some sort of nifty quasi-mythical fish that would be a full 50 pounder and actually be difficult to catch. (i.e. impossible without being level 12 or so)
I think using the 50 pound line and copper lures would make work here .... stupid to create a whole other pole when all we need is there.
I would be willing to build the areas ...

Have a boat go out from Hurm to the bay of Carocsa for shark fishing.
-
They should revamp fishing.
Instead of having a dot in the water with the name of the fish.
Maybe have a Highlightable area in the water where you can shoot or drop a line.
There be a secrect dice roll for faliure or sucess.
If you Fail Nada,If you suceed you catch a Random type of fish.
Have each area stocked with maybe 2-5 diffrent types of fish.
To add some excitment a critcal faliure maybe you can catch a Monster of some sort.
Ive seen a craft system like this.Forgot the ame of the system.
I have no clue how to script so its up to those wizards.

Why not include a bigger fish and somthing that can be crafted from these higher level fish or fish parts. Shark sail fish or even some monsterous fish we have not seen that have rare compnoents for crafting special items. Thinking shark teeth, Sword fish nose, sail fish fin, octopuss ink, or even Garr Guts :). This would allow for the tradeskill of fishing to have usable and desired trade letting the crafters look for the fisherman. Even some poisonous fish or jelly fish for the poison crafters. This could also spawn a whole new proffession of professional fisherman guide that will take you fishing to find that trophy or hard to get component. I can see it now a tour to the reef and fishing spots to get thoes big uns. It seems to be a slow XP hobby and have given it up (After I ate my herring raw). just my 2 cents.

The problem with making Fishing usefull is ...
Well, let's take a look at the tradeskill chart for a moment. You see those people on that chart for fishing? Well, I can tell you from personal experience that if you are on that chart, that you spend ALOT of time fishing, and probably not because you need the food.
I started fishing, because it is something Quin would do to relax. I don't go out and fish because it is profitable (really, with a 400 gold investment to get to my spot, I would have to charge a bundle to make a profit ...) or because I need the food (because it would be cheaper and easier just to buy inn food) but because it is a fun RP "craft."
Quin goes fishing to relax. Sometimes he takes a few buddies and they sit by the lake and talk for hours while catching fish now and again. Hardly anyone passes through that way, and when they do, they are moving to quick to bother with us. We are pretty much left alone to RP and fish and have a good time with our little fishing-trip (that is 400 gold per person mind you)
Now ... if fishing becomes "usefull" then that will change. First off, the CNR camping rule would have to be enforced, which means Quin and his fishing buddies can't sit around for hours catching fish. For two, EVERY crafter will want to fish to get things. People will be running around the fishing-spots like they are going out of style. Even if Quin does get a chance to relax, I doubt he would enjoy it for long before someone else comes up. Now, an even bigger problem is that the fishing system is kinda weird as far as difficulty. Quin began fishing Pike on Rilara, and when he hit level 2 of fishing, could get a catfish at a decent rate. Right now, Quin can plop up a catfish almost as soon as he sits down with his pole. I have no idea how this works exactly ...
Really, I just want some new places to fish, and take my friends.

I agree With Zhofe.
I would however, like the fishing spots not to have the names of the fish you are about to catch.
"Good I caught a... oh just a carp."
It would make it interesting.
I personally LOVE the little messages that appear: "fishing is relaxing" etc.
Perhaps add more of those?
-
You would like to have the caught type of fish being random? that would be sweet if each pond had a certain fish population carp, catfish etc. and you would have a percantage chance of catching each type of fish. even fish you could not eat could be added or some that are so small that you put them back again.
Heh, don't know if it is possible, would just seem more realistic to me at least...
And if we ever have a chance of fishing from a boat Skarp is going out to catch a swordfish he can hang on the wall. That would surely give Gro something to nag about *grins*.
