That is all.

It's best if you leave like 10 minutes more...When it crashes...Find something Fun to do - contribute on the forums or something, get your voice heard!
Try running around the house 5 times, that should work.
-
This has come up so often it is natural for most but theres always new people and so I would like to have this as a *Sticky* somewhere.
Regards
-
Acctually, I think its not natural for most people. Often when the server crashes with 32 people on or something, I chat a bit in the chat look back to see if it came up yet, and theres 21 people on. Thats 2/3rds who aren't waiting 5 minutes.

Thing is, when the server comes back up, people think 'heh probably it won't hurt if i login already, i mean, what's wrong with only one person logged now?', and then there are about 20 more people thinking the same way... *shrugs*
This has to change, but it's so hard for people to realize it, it's just sad.
-
The people who are causing the crashes have no clue, they don't bother to read the forums.
We can all make posts till were blue in the face, its up to them to read them and follow it.

First time I saw this. Will do....Looks like five minutes of forum browsing for me.
-
When the server crashes and I feel like waiting around to play some more, I go and chat with other players. More often than not, I get so caught up in the conversations that I forget to log back in and end up only coming back after 15-20 minutes of chatting.
-
I tend to walk off and do everything i haven't done yet....
eat,
sleep,
drink,
use the toilet,
and actually one time it was all of the above.

Most exciting day in awhile, huh? ;)

Harhar :p Sorry couldn't resist

*winks*
-
Yoohoo...*shakes his head and points to the heading of the thread*
Edit: Heh...from the time I started posting this (because I witnessed people doing it) to the time I alt+tab back to the game, the server had crashed again. Just wait and let it load.
-
lol sry I did all that and went to log in and got booted, bad timing on my part sry
-
OK I have a cure for this I hope
1 can you make it so we cannot login until the server is done rebooting up? If you gurus can problem solved.
2 Can you program in a SHOUT that comes on every 3 hours that states not to rush the server
3 Can we (the community) write a standerd SHOUT that the GM's and /or selected players can do once and a while
well just a sugestion of a cure
-
If people would just go and take a bio, get something to eat, read the forums....If you wait a few minutes it will come up and be playable.
-
STOP RUSHING!!!!!
-
*sighs* I tried to tell them.
Now you all have Pankoki yelling...that can't be good.
-
Stop rushing, or some GM will port you and I to the GM Area. And then you and I will talk for hours... until you crack!
-
I guess an idea to temporarily change the password for the server until the reset is complete would be a good a idea...that way NOONE could get back on until the password was changed back.
-
One way I tell if it's okay to log back on, is by my ping count. If my ping count is above norm, even by 20 or so pings, I wait, until I see the ping drop to what it normally sticks around, which, for me, is around 98. When the server is rebooting, or lots of people are trying to log in at once, my ping count jumps up anywhere from 150-250. When I see that, I simply go do something else or chat.

This is a possibility, however...
* It does not help in cases where the game server crashes. I don't mean the hardware server, I mean the game server software itself. In the event of a software crash, the game server restarts, and this typically happens in an unattended manner.
* While rushing during startup is certainly a great waytocrash the server, rushing even after the server is fully started can lead to crashing. Changing the password prevents the former, but does nothing for the latter.
Here's what I suggest:
1) When the server goes down, whether it is manually reset or it crashes, wait at least 5-7 minutes before even thinking about logging on again. 2) Dust off your old PnP dice, find the d20 and roll that. Add the number to that 5-7 minute wait time and wait that much time again. Impatient types can roll 1d6+2 instead. ;) If you don't have these dice, then pick a random number in that range or have someone else do it....or count the number of empty soda cans around your computer, or potato chip crumbs stuck in your keyboard... 3) After waiting this semi-random amount of time, begin to log back on. If the ping times for the server are still really high or unstable, hold off another minute or so.
You too can help avoid needless server crashes! :)

Thanks Dorganath
I kinda like #2 but now I need to get my dice from my sons. Kawika, Kekoa where are my Ultra Rare Big FOAM dice? hehe Don't tell them! When the server crashes I will hunt them down then use the son I see frist for target practice. hehehaha fun fun fun
Before you complain to me they are FOAM so SOFT d20 is about as big as a T-Ball Baseball but much much softer!

If this thread (topic) isn't a sticky it should be so it will not have to be constantly bumped as people tend to forget. Although for most of the community this should be common sense by now (I hope).

Soda cans? Crap... I'd not be able to come back for a few hours. o.o;;
-
ahh, memories of soda cans..... I recall, freshman year of college.... the room was overflowing with empty Dr. Pepper cans...... so many, we decided not to throw them away, or even take them to the aluminum recycling center..... rather, we cut a piece of board in the shape of the Texas Tech "Double T", and screwed the cans to it.... it took over a hundred cans, but we finally made our five foot tall "Dr. Pepper Double T" ..... every can was a Dr. Pepper can except one, which was a random Coca-Cola can we found....

8) 8) BUMP :p :p
-
*sits in her chair, rocking* don't rush the server... don't rush ther server... don't rush the server.....
-
hmmm, server crashed 5 minutes ago, and 11 people are back on...
I think that don't rush the server rule needs to be, well, enforced
-
*bumps* Five mineral sapphires I'll never see again, don't rush!
-
How do you know when the server crashes vs. your connection got messed up and you "timed out".
Im in Alaska and suspicious of our cable. Whales have bitten it before on its way to Seattle.
Joking aside sometimes the game appears to go down for me and so I check the server status board and see that there are still lots of people logged in (even me!). I wait at times and then notice a hoard of people dropping off the server status so that looks to be a server crash. But even then sometimes the numbers go down to 2 or 3 people and then back up again.
Is there a good way to tell if the server crashed vs something went wrong on my end?
-
The server status does take some time to drop players off after they have dropped off. My most reliable method is looking in the NWN history or favorites tab and seeing what the status of the server is. Another way that is good is to get on the Layo chat server and ask there.
-
Yes, ask on the IRC server.
It usually starts to get a little bit annoying when server crashes 3-4 times in row...
-
Wacks Gotak on the head with a heavy flail, knocking him out, there no more rushing dwarf....pardon? You say? Oh dear, I didn't realise ye meant thee server, no no, I assure ye, really twas an honest mistake *shrugs*
-
*pushes it back to the top as a reminder*
-
good timing
-
I did not know this. Thanks for bumping this.
