Title: Suited for being a paladin?
Post by: Pibemanden on October 04, 2005, 03:03:00 PM
I was just thinking while writing in Storolds journal, would a character like him ever be declared suited for being a paladin. Sure he has the will to become one, but his stats speak for them selves that he wont be the best paladin around. I really want to know whether he would be refused to join the ranks of the protecters because he's too weak and lacks leadershipskills. His stats are;
Str 10
Con 12
Dex 12
Int 17
Wis 14
Cha 10

First off, please take all this with a grain of salt, I have never had the desire or took the time to read deeply on becoming a paladin (so right off the bat, you know I'm definately an expert).  And if you think all this is a total crock, please feel free to tell me.  But be nice, like Jeran, I'm fragile :)

I guess it all falls in how you define "best paladin around".

Desire and willingness to subject yourself to a life of paladinhood would count for a lot I'd think.  Being a paladin isn't an easy life, from what I gather, so if Storold is willing to do this wholeheartedly that should be a large positive step.

Leadership skills could be developed I guess.  Intelligence and common sense count a lot toward what makes a good leader, and Storold has both by his stats.
I take the charisma stat and use that to interpret how my characters deal with people.  Jeran has a 12 CHA, so he can be honeytounged and conniving if he wants to be (ask Yardislan :)) or fairly blunt spoken and very very insulting (again, ask Yardislan).  Daren (8 CHA) doesn't really care what other people think and will speak his mind no matter what (walking into the temple of Toran: *mutters bindin' at th' temple o' Toran...what be th' worl' comin' ta?  Toran sucks* in party chat, with one of Toran's paladins waiting outside the temple in the party)

Give me an ugly hunchbacked paladin that speaks gruffly who you know is a survivor over an empty headed pretty boy with blond hair and bright shining armor and flowery words any day.  Turn undead you say? Daren says if'n ye turn me axe sidew'ys, it be like a spatula, so I guess I c'n turn all th' deaders ye wants...

But like I said at the outset, I'm an expert, so I don't know a thing, and just proved it by this post :)

Well CHA is important for the paladin abilities that go off of a stat. Not too mention the turning aspect that a paladin receives against undead. It doesn't mean you can't RP a paladin well ... it just means that other PCs who developed their PCs around the Paladin class will do things a bit better than you.

I know that Storold isn't going to be a powerfull paladin. I was thinking about whether he would be accepted in a paladin order because of his low str and cha.

I think your strength is fine. And if you a wizard which i think you are you can just morph so you can carry more when you need to. Kharl has 16 strength and it helps with carrying stuff when minning but i wish i had put the pionts in charisma instead.

Thanks for the inputs(this goes to the others posting in this thread too). I have thought about the weight issue and have come to the conclusion that I would proberly stop carrying around stuff that I don't need imidiatly and concentrate on producing one type of items each time I craft.

My 2 cents on this.

If you're going to become a paladin for RP purposes, i think you'll do just fine as it's not only a combat class, but also a faith-driven one.

However, having low scores on both Strength and Charisma will make the fights harder, and your Paladin abilities much weaker, such as Lay on Hands, Smite Evil and the Divine Shield/Might optional feats.

So it seems that I can multiclass into a paladin if I have a succesfull cdq. Thanks for the many inputs, I'll begin writing up on Storlds journal now...

Well, becoming a paladin doesn't mean you have to quit using arcane spells, especially a paladin of Lucinda. A couple Bull's Strength, Endurance and Eagle's Splendor and you're set. Preferrably either empowered or maximized. Then you should have things such as flame weapon, ghostly visage, etcetera, that you can use to your advantage too. I don't think you'll be a bad paladin, you can even be better than others with your arcane spells.

I will be casting quite a lot af spells, the chapter I am joining will allow leveling both as a paladin and as an abjurer. I have discovered the power of arcane spells while I am rp'ing using a sword, it really helps battle all those attacks of oppotunity. I really look forward to having Storold level as a paladin if his cdq is succesfull.

Here is an intresting one:

Weston Pendrot

Sorcerer

12 STR

12 DEX

14 CON

10 WIS

14 INT

16 CHA

Not including stat increases in CHA for levels achieved

For a Paladin of Lucinda, he wouldn't be the most battle hardened. He would however have an incredible amount of magical power on the battlefield, as well as a strong leadership presence, Divine protections, and a powerful Turn Undead.

With a low WIS there would have to be some increase in that stat.. but even one point would make a large diffrence.

Pretty boy? yes... but then your also going to die when you find that Lightning strikes the same place twice... every four seconds.

I would think that Lucindite Paladins wouldn't be as Warriorish as say a Torranite, considering the Weave is the source of their power.

Strong leadership isn't what Storold has most of(Pretty stupid for a paladin but it is the case)... And turn undead isn't that important for a lucindite paladin. Undead isn't enemies of the weave as long as they stay where they are supposed to.

Excatly what Storold is like. He can be usefull in battle but he isn't a good warrior unless he uses his magical powers.

In Weston's case... he really doesn't like Undead... and for reasons I cannot at this time divulge.
