what would I have to do to become a shape shifter.

Definitely read up; there is tons of good onfo in the handbook. If I remember correctly, going from Druid to shifter doesn't even require a CDQ so it's pretty much like being a multiclass, you just have to include it in your Bio or recreate your bio for submission in the Character Creation forum for approval involving the new class. A DM could explain that better i'm sure.

You can't apply for shape shifter on character creation so don't even put it in your bio. However you can show him leaning towards that in your bio as long as its not shown as him shifting. Basically you create a druid, RP him in game and write a chracter development thread in the forum showing his reasons for becoming a shifter. You do this as you play and it must support the PrC. Then you need to take a CDQ and if thats successfully completed you get to take levels in that class. The shifter class is the only class that druids can freely multiclass with.
And I know that its been said you don't need to take a cdq but yes you do...and thats a good thing, really :)
