Title: First screenshots of NWN 2 hitting the shelf
Post by: Filatus on October 11, 2005, 08:23:00 AM
If someone has a subscribtion on PC Gamer, I'm mighty jealous. Latest screenshots of NWN 2 will be shown in the latest issue. I've only found descriptions yet about the screenshots, but from what I've read dragons will never be the same. :)

A few days ago my borther showed me new screenshots of NWN2 online, don't know the adress though. I am mighty sure those screenshots will be online quite quickly.

Nope.  While recent those on that link are older.  They were from some leaked promotional material from a while ago that finally reached the net.

I really don't CARE what it looks like, to be honest, I want it to be functional as a PW, I turn the graphics down when online anyway to minimize any skip I might get so... FX are great for single player, not such a big deal for me long term for what happens here. I just hope they hurry up and release it, so the code gurus here can start fixing all the bugs I'm sure they will release it with (for free, bonus!) and we can see if it's a feasable 'next step' for Layonara. Not that I know whats going on in Leanthars head, but.... Going to have to get the game and play with it to see whats going to happen with it I am sure.

Actually, I am more interested in Dragon Age than NWN2.

http://www.bioware.com/gallery/index.html?galleryID=80&screensize=3&screenimage=2

It's bioware who is doing the legwork here.

Though NWN2 will likely be released a lot earlier.
Only reason I would buy it.

Hmm you're right...one thing I've heard from the NWN2 forum though which I didn't much like is that familiars are going to be inventory items rather than possessable creatures.  Same with companions too, to be honest I think thats a shame :(

How is that possible? You activate the item and a famiar comes out? *confused*

They say they are changing a few things but keeping the concept and major parts of the system the same but I havent read recent stuff.

As for Dragon Age, I am not looking forward to it seeing as how they want it to be an MMORPG, probably pay to play like all the other companies nowadays.  :(

I don't want NWN 2 coming out, because then Layonara online may die :( I don't want that to happen, I hope like you can upgrade it to NWN 2!

Just one minor problem with upgrading to nwn2, no linux client. This is really what's keeping me from getting happy about an upgrade of Layo from nwn to nwn2...

I refuse to pay $40-$50 for a game, then continue to pay for the privilege of continueing to play a game I've already bought. It just violates my principles on so many different levels. Like buying a car, then paying a lease on it too. I think MMORPG's are the new cocaine, Gods way of telling you you have too much money.

Donate to Layonara instead, you'll get better game play, a better atmosphere and all sort of other cool things, like CDQ's and a skill prgression that doesn't put you on autopilot for three months. Not to mention I've never heard anyone here called a N3wB.

I hear what you guys are saying about MMO's... I really do.
"Donate to Layonara instead, you'll get better game play, a better atmosphere and all sort of other cool things, like CDQ's and a skill prgression that doesn't put you on autopilot for three months. Not to mention I've never heard anyone here called a N3wB."
Donate?  I make no more than $200 a month (on average) and that does not pay for 1/2 the bill any more.  I was making about $325 at one time and it covered a good part of it....
So I can guarantee you an MMO can not be run by donations--not possible if a company wants to make money and since they will be paying employees--well they have to make money.
As to GM run Quests, ECDQ's, CDQ's and all of that... a good company can do the same thing if they structure things right and know how to run them--and that is a major thing that MMO's are missing in the market today (well one of quite a few major things).

And on that note, I'm going to donate because I get a paycheck tomorrow.  Its not much but its what I can kick in, and all I have to do is... not impulsively buy things I don't really need while nearing the grocery store checkout.    We need to have another donation "drive" like trace used to do when he went crazy and made all those posts.  Where is trace anyway?  But yeah, everyone with a credit card, donate 10 bucks.  Just click the thing!  You don't have to think about it 'till next month!   No, but seriously.  Think about how much of your time at work you're donating by giving just 10 bucks right now.  For me, its an hour.  My work-study job isnt that great heh.  But... I mean, thats not that long.  A lot of people are "donating" a lot of their time to make, and run this world, and L, a lot of his time AND money... so thats like... 2x the time.  Anyway, if you want to donate your time to layo you can, whether you know squat about scripting and stuff or not.  Just donate some of your time at work.  Donate 15 minutes of your time at work (come on, you know you took a coffee break for that long anyway!), or donate 30 minutes, or donate an hour.  If you'd gladly spend an hour of your time doing something to help layo but don't know how, spend that time at work, and donate it to layo.  You can even think about layo while doing this if you want.   I disclaim all liability for possible loss of job if thinking about layo induces waking nightmares about rust monsters, balor high princes, rift drow, fisty's kobolds, and/or fantasies about succubi.  Thank you.  -TV

L that goes with out saying.. i would rather continue playing here with the folks than have all the new bells and whistles with a game type. as to NWN2 time will tell, i will buy it ofcoarse and hopefully it will be half as good as this one. but with a lot of the other new games i have bought, in the rack with the rest after i am done with them.  as long as layo remains vibrent and living place i'll stay right here

A few screenshots were leaked to a french NWN 2 website http://www.NWN2.fr, or so I read somewhere. But they seem to have been taken down already. *sighs*

Anyway, people won;t have to pay to play NWN 2 online, it won't be that kind of game. As far as I've been able to find anything NWN 2 again will not be developed for PW's in paticular but that doesn't mean it will not be able to be used in that way. Obsidian employees are for the most part from Bioware and they know the importance the online community has been for NWN 1. And also they will be using the same game engine as was used for NWN 1, that might helps things a bit along. They only introduced a new graphics engine.

About the donating. Leanthar, is it possible to donate without using a creditcard. I don't have one and I will probably never take one.

EDIT: Well, there are these, but I think they're old.

Ahh, NWN 2's greatest supporter Rhomal, from the NWN 2 News site has been so kind to grab a digital camera and make a few foto's. I'm sorry to say he's such a bad photographer, but still.. just look at the dragon.

http://www.nwn2news.net/modules/news/article.php?storyid=391

The pics are a bit big by the way and take a long time to download, well for me they did. According to the developers the picture from the dragon is directly from the game.

EDIT: Heheh, ten minutes later the screenshots have already been replaced by even better ones. I love the internet. :D

yay for scary looking dire boars!

Judging from those screenshots they have two tilesets so far heheh.  Have they said when its supposed to come out?  Or is 2006 the best estimate.  I plan on taking whatever date they give, add 9-12 months to it, and that'll probably be when it comes out.  Not that I'm complaining about that... I hate when a good game feels like it was rushed in spots.

No according to what I've read when the item/familiar is equipped it offers new abilties skills or stats instead.  Just no actual animal.

The second screenshot says that the mod and scripting system should remain the same, that's great news!

Thats silly.  I'm sure its based on speculation, people saying something with partial information, and the "through the grape vine" effect.

Its probably based on something that was said like "Familiars will acctually give mages the benefits they should get as in PnP."  like certain familiars that give bonus hp, or give alertness etc.

Written by Anthony Davis, Obsidian programmer

The current plan is that familiars will not fight. They can be put in your backpack.

I think the jury is still out on damaging familiars, but I would bet on 'No'.

Animal Companions are a completely different deal. They will be similar to how they were in NWN1.

Again, none of this is completely set in stone yet.

So there will be an animal. It will be the same as in BG 2, where you can choose to keep him in your backpack.

EDIT: Concerning the release date, NWN 2 has been booked by Atari for the second financial quarter of 2006. Or something like that. But I wouldn't be surprised if the game would come out in december 2006

Just what we need... Oddpetal the spastic Fairydragon pokeing it's head out of my backpack every few minutes to annoy me... and everyone in hearing range. I wonder if they will add an animation so you can see the thing wiggiling in your pack or have it's head pop out once in a while... would be entertaining at the least.

If those are the screenshots, something tells me I am going to need to purchase a high end graphics card :(

Did check out the NWN forum through bioware, and it seems the ongoing posts that I have read, say that 2DA is here to stay, that there is GUI and XML. That most things in the existing NWN will be migrateable to NWN 2. I may have read this wrong, but I think that is what the programmer at Obsidian is saying.

Not really sure I like the whole virtual aspect of NWN 2, it looks so like Civ IV.

Yup, to enjoy the full potential of NWN 2 you will need a 512 MB videocard. But still, it'll probably still be a year before it comes out. Plenty of time.

You can play Battlefield 2 or Half Life 2 on full graphics with a 512MB card, you won't need that for NWN2.....I think :)

Hmm, yes, you're probably right. Couldn't find where I read it anymore, which makes me doubtful whether I actually read it in the first place. As far as I could find the only problem might be that the videocard will have to be able to support all direct x 9.0 functions. Of course I have no idea what that means. :)

Probably just the req for the absolute highest gfx setting.  Likely if you nix some of the shadow casting lights and such and lower the resolution it'll run pretty smoothly on a 128mb card.  By no means will the min req for vram be half a gigabyte; that'd bankrupt them as only 4% of the gaming population would be able to play it.

I'm hoping they make their content even more easy to modify this time around.  Like wizards in the toolset that more easily generate new feats, spells, weapon types without having to edit a hackfile.  More useful administrative panels and logs would be very useful for PW maintainence.  Also... please please PLEASE let there be the fly spell! :P  It's so useful just to soar over obstacles from time to time... been playing XMen Legends 2 and Magneto is my favorite character thanks to this ability.

Overall, I'm excited about their GFX and GUI this time around.  Kind of steering away from the Warcraft top-down perspective and more mirroring a 3D style like Gothic II or Fable.  Ideally though, I wish there was more action and eye-hand control involved for PWs.  The point-click-kill Everquest standard, though "fair" is somewhat boring compared to a more active interface akin to Fable's heavy action.

Of all the games I *really* wish would become a PW, it'd have to be Vampire: Bloodlines.  It's GUI plays like Doom when you're shooting firearms, Fable when you're up close in melee, Knights of the Old Republic when you interview NPCs, and the Thamaturgy and Obfuscate modes where pretty well done.  The storyline is probably the darkest I've seen in a PC game so far, more vile than Grand Theft Auto.

I just hope they release a Mac compatible version of it, though I suspect my current computer (a 1.5Ghz Apple Powerbook with 64Mb ATI Radeon 9700 graphics) won't be fast enough (it works perfectly with the original NWN, though, even on quite high graphics settings)
