Title: Flame Weapon
Post by: Talan Va'lash on October 16, 2005, 09:47:00 PM
The IG spell desc, and the description in the handbook states 1d4 +1/lvl to a max of +10.

For both of my characters that can cast this spell, the temporary property still says (level 1) and I don't think its doing more than 1d4+1 damage.

Sounds like the descriptions are wrong.  The spell was changed to 1d4 + 1/5 caster levels, I think.

Are you thinking darkfire maybe?  Darkfire is 1d6 +1 every 4 or 5.  The wizard one is (or should be) intentionally more powerfull because... well, a wizard cant turn himself into a soloing machine like a cleric can with the spells unmodified.  A wizard's flame weapon is a party buff as opposed to how clerics most often cast darkfire on themselves.

Even in the default versions of the spell the wizard spell becomes more powerfull than the cleric at higher levels even though it starts with a lower damage die.

I rather agree that +1 every level up to 10 is probably too strong and stops increasing too soon, but it should progress more quickly than darkfire +1/2 or +1/3.

Even if +1 every 5 is how its currently implemented, my level 8 sorc is still getting the +1 version rather than the +2 which is what he should have now since the spell starts at 1d4+1 when you can first cast it at level 3 or 4 for wiz/sorc.

+ Both Darkfire and Flameweapon are not PnP spells and they completely throw the balance of things out the window, they were put in to NWN in order to help balance things for a single player campaign.  I almost got rid of the spells completely but decided against that after some input from the team as well as a few players.  These spells now do a max bonus of 1d4+4 and you get the +’s once ever 5 spell casting levels.  So if you are a level 10 caster casting this it will do 1d4+2 points of bonus.  This is more in line with our crafting system as well as keeping with the idea of a low/mid magic world.

Oh yeah, I remember that.  The tlk and handbook should be updated though.  Is darkfire's description correct?

Both spell descriptions are correct.

You mean fixed?  or correct?  because my flame weapon description IG at the time of this post was incorrect.  I will check.  It is also stated as 1d4+1/lvl up to +10 in the campaign handbook.

That's because what's in the handbook got ripped from the in-game description, so if that's wrong, the book is wrong :)
