//Greetings everyone, new player on Layonara here. At 3rd level I purchased 7 healing kits and had 4 failures out of 7. at 4th level I went and bought 7 more and again had 4 failures out of 7. Why am I failing about 50% of the time?
My healing skill is at 8, my wisdom bonus (Paladin) is +1. When I examine the kits, it says a DC check of 15 is needed to cure disease and poison, but nothing about the kit failing, and I don't see a DC check against failure.
Thanks for your replies, just trying to get a feel for the game.
Cheers!

Are you using them in combat? It isn't possible so you'll always fail if it's during combat.

Thanks for the reply. No, not in combat.
For example, after combat I will be down say 20 hp's. I will try a healing kit and get a failure, try again get a failure, try again and heal for 10, try again and get a failure, try a fifth time and heal for 10.
Thanks!

Yea, I always make sure the combat music has passed, it helps alot.
Also, I have not confirmed this, but when I put my weapons away (which should be natural) I succeed much more often. By level 2 I made sure to think about the RL work regarding treating wounds.
Makes a difference.

Thanks for the insight. So healing kits do fail without a visible DC roll even if you are out of combat with weapons sheathed?
Is there a skill that you will increase over time to lessen this (like the healing skill)?

Well as I play a fighter-type, healing kits are my good friends. At lower levels I also remember failing some times to apply the kit, but once my healing skill covered the shown DC, I never fail anymore (out of combat at least). So perhaps the DC is for application not disease/poison.

Thank you.
Yes, that is my suspicion as well. . . that the listed DC if for overall kit success/failure and NOT to check for poison/disease cure.
I posted because I did not see a DC roll for success or failure, and I found it odd that for the listed DC of 15, with a healing skill of 8 and a +1 Charisma modifier, I should be successful 70% of the time.
But, in a small sampling, results can look skewed that otherwise even out over a larger data group.
Thanks for all the help!

yeah, the DC 15 applies all the time, and is handled behind the scenes. wait until you reach 7th or 8th level and you won't fail too often. also, charisma doesn't help with heal kits.. it's wisdom based i'm pretty sure.

Thank you everyone for clearing this up for me.
Yes, I misspoke, I have a +1 WIS modifier applying to the healing kits, not a +1 CHA.

Use of healing kits will always fail if used during combat.
Combat does not end when all the spawns are dead, it usually last for a while longer.
A good guideline is to wait till the bodies have disappeared.
And if you keep an eye on the right hand dialog windows, you will see the message about cannot use during combat and if I am not mistaken you see the roll vs the DC there as well.

Catarina is level 6 her total healing skill with feats puts her over 15.. she doesn't fail any more.
Just remember.. you have to roll... add your score... and if you're under 15.. you fail the heal.

Actually, there's no indication in the mechanics dialog window about the Healing Kit except "[Character] uses item's special power. | [Character] healed [Heal Mod] points./You don't apply the bandages correctly, and your healing fails (or something of that nature)." And I always look to see whether my Rest button is still browned-out. If I'm somewhere I could never rest, anyway, then I'll go by the music.

The roll will show if you have enabled it. You can change how "verbose" the system is. You can make it tell you some incredibly complicated mathamatical rolls for almost every simple thing we do in game.
-
I'll just summarize it succinctly in one post even though much of this has been said repeatedly allread heh:
Healkits autofail in "combat" and the kit is wasted (anything that NWN considers combat and about 1 round after any real combat has ended.)
when you use a healkit (outside of combat) you make a heal check vs DC 15 with a modifier equal to your ranks in heal+wis mod+any other modifiers(bardsong, etc)+the bonus of the healkit (+1,+3,+6 etc.).
If you fail the check the kit is wasted.
If you pass the check you are healed a number of hp equal to your ranks in heal+wis mod+any other modifiers(bardsong, etc)+the bonus of the healkit (+1,+3,+6 etc.)
AND
You are cured of any ACTIVE poison or disease. However any stat dmg you have already taken from said poison or disease will not be removed and will require a restoration or some other spell/potion/technique to remove.

How? The radial menu off of the chat window doesn't give me that kind of option; what will?

Oh um.. it's some sort of "verbosity"... I can't remember where the option is, but I left it on normal since it gets kinda crazy with all the text and the flying and flinging and medication.... um.... so.. yeah... maybe one of the other patients....er.... other who *have* the patience... can show you where it's at.
