Title: Kids day out.
Post by: Vyris on December 20, 2005, 03:37:00 PM
I have a 7 year old. he loves to play the SP game on one of our other computers. Recently I had a thought and I think maybe perhaps friday or next week after christmas I might put it into action.

What I will do is set up a multiplayer game and have my son log in. I just wanted to know if there are any other parents out there who might enjoy watching me herd cats through the first act or so of the SP scenario.
I'd set it up to be really easy, no PvP and such, so plast away with the fireballs all you want, etc.

I anticipate this lasting 3-5 hours, but, more likely 5+.

Basic mouse skills are a plus, typing is definately not expected, reading is helpfull, but if your child can stay reletively close to the group and knows how to click on the bad guys thats enough for me. Some recognition of the level up icon and a parents help to sort equipment and help level characters would be needed.

Of course, any parents that wanted to help would be welcome, I have a pretty zippy cable connection and computer so I should be able to handle a little multiplayer traffic.

Essentially I'll babysit your kid(s) for a couple hours on NwN, as long as you are willing to handle some of the game mechanics on your end.

Let me know if anyone is interested.

I have a kid that would love to bash the bad guys... but I'll be helping control his movement, leveling, and things like that... so I can help you, and I can let him bash things, IF hes home and IF I don't work that day.

My son would love this, what characters would we use? He plays a 27th level weapon master/champion of torm/ fighter, on the Single Player and made it through hordes of the underdark by himself I doubt he would have little trouble fighting his way through there. Oh this character also has 486 hit points. My son is 12 so typing is not his strong point.  I wish we could do it, but we will be in mexico, and they have no connection there. Rats..!

my 10 year old daughter would love to play. she has spent numerous hours watching me play layo and has fought some skeletons and myconids on layo, but has little SP experience. the week after christmas works great for me. i wil be on a dial up connection, ping about 100-200 on layo's servers. i dont have any SP characters made.  what level should i get he/she  to? I will definitly be watching as well since i have yet to be on one of your quests but have read many good posts about them. i will keep an eye on this thread for more details or pm me. she will be very excited to hear this.

I'd like everyone to start level 1 characters, we can all suck the same that way. I am open to suggestions as far as the time of day. Dec 30th works the best for me, I can have them up and running as soon as 1-2 pm EST.

I was thinking about just doing the original SP campaign. If they enjoy that and we can work something else out Minerva suggested a pirate Mod that sounded interesting.

Glad to see some other youngins got the urge to play out there. My oldest boy is now insisting that we call him 'Guimi' His Dwarven fighters name. 'gooweeemee' is how he says it, I call him 'gooey you' instead.

Go ahead and post a tenative time for having the kids meet up on the 30th and we will all work something out.

This is a great idea.
My daughter would love to play.  She is a bit young maybe (almost 6) but I will help her from my side.
Her mouse control is fine, but typing is a no-no.....takes her 10 minutes to type her name.
I will keep my eye out for dates and time. Next week I am on leave so anytime would work basically. Not sure if there is a decent PST/GMT time overlap. Maybe in the morning PST (which would be early evening GMT). The EST 1-2pm works well actually.

My son would love this. I told him about it in passing, and he's brought it up every day since. His attention span would probably only last an hour or so, but he'd really enjoy that. Especially if it was pirates. I might be able to get set up on two machines and could either be another player or a GM, whatever would help the most. Maybe if I played a healer, things might go better.

30 December mid-day US time zones sounds good.

I'll go through and PM everyone the IP and the time the server should be up for logging in later tonight. I'm burried under a pile of 900 e-bay listing right at the moment, so it will be a little while :)

oh yeah... I don't work today, and my son could come on.

but, like someone else said-I've never played on another server (unless you consider that capture-the-dragon game one)

I'll be setting this up shortly.

Since my new cable modem seems to think that I'l too stupid to have any need to know what my outside IP adress is I am join to set up the game and post it to the internet on Gamespy.

The game/server name will be: A kids day
The password will be the same one you use to play on Layonara.

An easy way to find what IP address you are using on the outside is to go to http://www.showmyip.com

I've been searching GameSpy. Could someone give me a hint as to what category it's under? Or the IP?

Thanks

Drat. I'm just getting a "couldn't connect to server" message. I'm trying to direct connect to the IP given. Is there any chance a firewall is blocking the NWN server ports? Has anyone else managed to get in?

No, the problem is entirely on my end.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to postpone this and work something out with my cable company because it's resetting my IP address a little too frequently, and not letting me set up anything stable.

Sorry guys, Me and my kids were looking forward to this too.

No problem. I'm on vacation right now, or I'd just host it. If you can't get things worked out with your ISP (and good luck with that, in my experience), let me know. When I'm home I have a fast DSL and I've reprogrammed my DSL modem and my router to allow NWN hosting :) Thanks anyway and have a good holiday.
