When you craft armors you recieve half the ingots you use (rounded down) as mangled metals when you fail crafting. but when you craft weapons you recieve 1 mangled metal no matter how many ingots you use. Which seems a bit unlogical since it must be as easy to recycle metals from armor crafting as from weapon crafting. Since weapon crafting is one of the most dfficult crafts to master I don't think this small change would alter the system very much, but it will of course make the life of the weapon crafter a bit easier.

To add to this, I've wondered why only certain metals produce mangled metals upon failure. I know failing with silver doesn't produce mangled metal, but failing with platinum does. Is this intentional, and, if so, what is the line of thought behind it?

This is a balance sort of thing, not a logical sort of thing (sadly).
I have had serious considerations of removing all mangled metals. It is part of the problem (at least to some degree) of the flooding of the market with metal items and such.
