Title: Defenders Of Nature, And The Rapid Shot Feat
Post by: Glassman on December 29, 2005, 12:43:00 AM
Hi all. As some of you may know, I play Lan Aeldanner. He's a ranger and staunch follower of Folian S'pae. He believes in protecting all wild places from the enemies  of his deity as well as guiding the unwary traveller through such places to protect both travellers, and the wild animals who live in such places from eachother. To most, I hope Lan lives up to a rough approximation of what they consider a good ranger to be.

One small point I wish to make is about the Rapid Shot Feat. Its is possibly the most useful feat any archer worth their salt could take. It allows them to fire off a rapid succession of arrows, most of which hit for middling damage. The more powerful the archer, the greater their potential with this feat. However.....NWN A.I. dictates that as an enemy falls, another is automatically selected and firing commences. The drawback with this feat is that in places inhabited by wild animals that are targetable, though not neccessarily hostile, they become the next target once all hostiles are dead. Same with attacking summons or animal companions etc. So to some druids and rangers it will seem like archers immediately target the nearest animal in their wild blood frenzy once all enemy targets are dead. This aint so. Im not sure how to work around this, but I certainly wouldnt want Lan pulled up before the Vakhar just because he was seen shooting a random wild boar because the A.I of Rapid Shot made him. I just think that in some cases the players of druids and rangers should allow a little leniency for archers who use this feat. Thanks all for reading the post.

This isn't Rapid Shot, it's how the Bioware AI works in any case.  If you target an enemy and then the enemy dies, you autoattack the next hostile target if it's within your perception.

Also if a NeutralToAll animal is within sight of you killing a hostile creature, it's faction towards you will change.

Thanks for clearing that up. Makes alot more sense why animals are suddenly slaughtered for no reason in the midst of combat.

Hmm there is another issue about rangers NWN and the rapid shot feat though.  As far as I am aware in PnP a ranger has the choice of going the way of the bow which includes feats similar to PBS and RS or, as in NWN the way of two armed combat.  However in NWN you don't get that choice you have to have the two armed combat feats, which is a pity really considering how many rangers tend to use bows.

I dunno, I like my blades.  almost worship having two.
Yes, I use my bow for partying combat, but find that the two blades when alone are very effective.

It just makes the ranger more versitile.  And you'll NEVER see me with a shield...
But getting matching pairs of weapons gets to be kinda spendy.

If you can RP killing the animals (you need thier hides/meat/whatever) or that you had no choice, they were rabid... I dunno, it doesn't really work.  I haven't thrown points into rapid shot, mostly push my points into my blades, and sneaking types.  TRY to be versitile
