Ward’s eyes snapped open, the memory of his recent falling at the hands of goblins intruded into his thoughts, shattering his peaceful meditation. Sighing, he stood up, the moment was gone, still the learning from the encounter was: Do not be over confident. The firebomb that had been thrown at him had been a surprise and the resulting experience had not been pleasant.
Since being in and around Hlint, Ward had helped a number of the local population in various tasks. Some had been easy; others had proven to be deadly. A trip to obtain a head of a bugbear had proven to be a blood bath. The party had consisted mainly of dwarves that appeared to be fighters. One, Victor, also fought quite effectively with empty hands although often without subtly, using power to smash limbs and disable opponents.
Then there was Ael, a dark elf. He also fought without weapons, using techniques similar to Ward, but more effective, although they were sometimes cruel. Possibly this was a result of his earlier training in the lands of night.
Observing the two different fighting styles had provided some new insights into techniques that could be modified to suit him. Still, discussion and demonstrations of fighting styles with the two warriors would be a better learning experience. Perhaps he should seek them out again and see what he could learn.
Walking to the centre of a small paved area in Port Hampshire, Ward began to pace around in a circle, torso and guard facing towards the centre. Every eight steps around the circumference, Ward executed a technique, incorporating hand and leg movements, representing strikes, throws and locks. Every now and then, he focused on a particular technique that was not perfect. Over time, he hoped that it would become so. With the pattern, his mind became clearer again, allowing him to travel further down the path.
