In a quiet corner of the Caring Hope Inn sat Ifion Witseeker. He peered over his rough, hand drawn maps. Then, with an air of near reverence, he painstakingly transcribed the blood and dirtstained charts, hastily scrawled in a large book, onto the fresh sheet of parchment in front of him. Nearly an hour had passed when a disturbed expression crossed the old bard's face. He peered at his notebook, then brushed the pages with his inkstained hand. He held the book up, shifting it so as to take full advantage of the weak light in the tavern. He paused, then repeated a simple phrase while waiving his hand. His pen immediately began to give off a soft light. However, the added light only served to illuminate the problem. "I can't make out what I wrote here. It's so hard to write while invisible. And so hard to stay alive when I'm not." He chuckled hollowly at the paradox. "Looks like I'll have to revisit a few places before I can call these maps complete." And I just might have to be visible this time around. Which means I'll need some help. Pulling a fresh parchment sheet out of his pack, his half-elven hand quickly wrote out a notice. After giving a nod to a friendly passer-by, Ifion posted the note on the wall. To each with the desire to see the dangerous corners of Mistone AND the strength to smite what foes lie there, I, Ifion Witseeker, offer 100 pieces of gold for assisting in providing me safe passage for a short journey. The note concludes with instructions to assemble at the campfire west of Hlint the following week. // This is an event specifically for players new to the server, part of a series of player run "welcome" events Wednesday March 8th 7 pm PST / 3 AM Thur March 9th GMT // Please sign up using this Calendar Event (http://layonaraonline.com/forums/calendar/event-view.asp?eventid=1767&year=2006&month=3) // For this event to meet its objectives, the following draconian ground rules are necessary: Levels 1-6 only please Party Size Limit: 6 Max (priority is signed-up, then roleplay, then dicebag, party size has never been a problem so far) No running (except from monsters) There will be a "mandatory role-play period" at the beginning and possibly during at least one "campfire intermission" Please arrive with arrows/bolts, food, water, potions, flint, tinder or whatever you need to last the trip The goal is for everyone to survive the outing, so patience, restraint, and caution will be necessary (At least one person has died on each of these so far, and in all cases, it could have been avoided) This IS: A chance to see a little more of Mistone and learn how to move safely between Hlint and the wide, wide world An opportunity to ask in-character questions about world events and locations, NPC quests, where to find CNR, whatever A good place to ask in-character those questions people on the forums tell you to "ask someone in-game" A great time to trade crafting items and resources with people who can't use items better than the ones you can make A setting in which to meet people to go adventuring with later An acceptable time to use OOC tells to ask questions about the more frustrating aspects of the game's mechanics (eg I just can't get my character to fish ?! ) This is NOT: :p A GM run event (which means no GM granted XPs) Run by a player with extensive knowledge of all worldwide happenings An opportunity to "kite" or "draft" behind a high level tank character, soaking up XPs for fast leveling A chance to quickly group up and go 'hunting/bashing'

// Hopefully not too dumb of a question... but roughly how long will this event take in RL time? This would be a wonderful opportunity for both me as a player, and Aeoleth as a character, to get a better feel for Layonara and what is available out there, but I live in the Eastern time zone, and 10PM already starts running up against my bedtime. :)
I could probably manage staying up late one night and still have some sembelance of productivity the next day, as long as I know I won't be up too late...

// These usually take 2-3 hours. This is buried in the calendar event, but I should have posted it here as well. If you need to leave early, that can be arranged this time (meaning that on this trip, we should be able to get you to a safe spot so you can log out if necessary). I've learned from my mistakes on the past couple of trips like this, so this one should be shorter and crisper.
Hope to see you there.

I am glad to see you continuing to do this SquareKnot. Good job, and thank you.

// If you tried to sign up earlier and couldn't, sorry. Originally, I hadn't checked the "Allow signups" box. You should be able to sign up now, as I fixed this a few days ago. Signups really help me, because where we go depends a lot on the number, strength, and personalities of the participants. I have three routes planned now, and will pick one that allows for the best role play and survivability of the attendees.
Thanks. See you this Wednesday.

Isn't the campfire in Western Hlint Goblin lands surrounded by goblins?
I am coming, just don't want to die before it even starts
-
// Actually... (annoying yet thought provoking :P)

Drat. Sorry about that. I hope you were one of those that made it. I didn't see the post until after the event. I guess I need to be really careful about things like this for new players. I meant the safe rest area immediately south of the west gates of Hlint. Not the goblin camp west and up the hill. A lot of good that does you now, of course. If you didn't make it, please send me a private message and we'll work something out. I learn something each time I do one of these, and I guess that's my learning for this time.
To those that did attend, thank you. We were able to do everything I had planned, and it went fairly well. Thanks for putting up with me. And remember, tell no one what we saw. Your character's life depends on that a lot more than you think. Really. And not from me. From, well, you know who. Just one word -- "Zombie". Yep. Enough said.
