Title: Could we remove the Divine Relation vfx?
Post by: SquareKnot on April 13, 2006, 01:16:54 PM
Just a question/suggestion that I hope is taken in the right spirit.

Would it be possible to remove all vfx from the spell Divine Relation?

Would it make sense to replace the vfx with a pray or meditate action?

I really don't want to reopen this can of worms (http://layonaraonline.com/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=24664), so let's please keep this on the topic of removing/changing the visual effect or action related to the "spell" Divine Relation.

Thanks

Why not make it an area effect with no vfx that responds with anyone's relation nearby.  That dodges the targetting issue too.

And.. just to state the obvious, under this approach, the spell/prayer this would be "cast" on yourself, which makes more sense anyway, i.e., "grant me this knowledge".

Well if its caster targetted AoE flagged in the 2da you just hit the button and it casts.  You don't have to target yourself, it will do it automatically.

But also there is not as good a way to give the feedback to the player other than spewing:

John PC is neutral to XDeity
Jane PC is unfriendly to XDeity
Bob PC is Allied with XDeity

and so on for every PC (or every creature) in the AoE

Why not?
Make it an abillity like turn undead, and everyone affected would have thier diety assesed without hasssling the other player. Of course you would still have to look away from the player doing this, because no matter what you still need a item to be aktivated or an abillty that needs doing and aktivated for the ingame mechanics to work.

Maybe make it a ranged touch without visual/sound effects?

Probably much easier to change to than making it an AoE spell... :)

Better yet, make it an area effect, but where the only visual thing is the PC kneeling, as one does when they're binding.

I think something along the lines of how the Paladin Detect Evil used to work would be cool as an AoE effect, but it does not work towards the true intent of this spell. If Dulan was in Hlint and someone used the spell with Key, Remiel, Ozymandias, Acacea, Dervish, and Renji around you would get..

"There is an ally of Toran near. There are four enemies of Toran near. There is one whom does not have a divine connection near."

No names would be given, and everyone's faith would be kept to themselves generally. However, this spell -needs- to stay the way it is because of the fact that Clerics shouldn't be punished for raising someone whom they had no IN CHARACTER way of knowing who their God is. Even as an AoE, it still wouldn't serve it's purpose. Orth explained this a few times I think.

The visual effect or not, if you do not want to be seen casting it, just use an invisibility spell.

Why not let the AoE list names then?

X worships an ally of Toran
Y worships an enemy of Toran
Z worships an enemy of Toran
