Hello Everybody,
As everybody knows we are gearing up to start the NwN2 conversion of Layonara. One of the major concerns we have is that our servers will not be able to handle NwN2 specifications; they certainly can not at this time. Please understand that we do not have our hands on the product at this time and thusly this is all speculation but we are pretty sure it is accurate. NwN2 will take a lot more memory and likely faster hard drives (at the very least) in order to run the servers, at least for PW’s like Layonara. We have eight servers and as such we need to make sure all of them are running 2GB of memory and have fast hard drives. If we receive enough in donations we may even purchase a new system or two, but the memory and hard drives come first. As such, we need about $5,500 in order to upgrade all of the servers so that they can support Layonara for NwN2. This is a significant amount of money and thusly we need a strong push from the community in order to reach this goal. Whatever we are not able to raise will mean we have less servers and less horsepower to run the modules for the PW. Please take the time to donate. I hope to have all eight servers running at 2GB of RAM with SATA drives. The target date for the server updates is November. It will definitely take a long time to reach this monetary donation but spread the word and please do donate when you can.

We do not need hardware donations. I have used these servers (including memory and hard drives) for four years and I am sticking with Dell hardware and memory. When running a server farm that serves a community of this size (or larger because we will continue to grow) one must have reliable equipment and the Dell servers have proven to be very reliable.

I'll donate as soon as I have a few odds and ends wrapped up. I was about to ask where to send components until I saw your statement about no hardware donations/sticking with dell. I understand your reasoning on that one, too bad I don't have any new Dell hardware left over. :)

There is no way I am giving out bank account information--that would be crazy heh.
On the donations page there is an address that anybody can use to mail a check, money order, or any other form of payment.

I just setup a reoccuring donation - figured that would be the best possible option on my end. After all, I pay 15$ a month for a game I don't play, 41$ every three months for a game I play occassionaly, so why not 10$ a month for a game I play too much :)

We have had a total of six donations so far. From what we understand at this point NwN2 has some very STEEP requirements for PW server farms folks, we need to upgrade memory and hard drives at the very least. Please donate if you want to have a smooth running server farm.

At the moment, there's 55 countries where Paypal is an option. Please visit https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-approved-signup-countries-outside for a list and click on the link of your country. In most cases, you can then transfer money from your regular bank account to your paypal account, and then onwards to L in order to get us new servers.

I recommend anyone that has a payment plan coming from PayPal that you check the status. I went to verify that mine was still going, but somehow is had been cancelled. The account did not have any details on the cancellation. It may be something that PayPal does when a certain payment is not touched for a long time.

I was going to donate $10 a month, but I will raise this to $25 until upgrade is made. Oh and it's the middle of the moth allready... Time flies when your having fun *grins* I will make my June donation soon.

That would be a violation of the EULA for NWN and would cause very bad things for Layonara's longevity, Leanthar's bank account and various other things.
So no.

*He grins.* And I knew it (in-game benefits) wouldn't happen, but hey, a tag on the forums of "Donated $100+ for NWN2 Servers!" would be nice, and not involve any legal difficulty (as far as I know).

No, those go entirely for payments for the bandwith. This is hardware upgrade only.

I kind of think we could give the needed cash without ingame payback but if there are enough people who need that encouragement...
I don't see any balance problem if there should appear in the new system in the middle of the future Hlint or whatever a "Statue of the Forgotten Soldier in the Battle against Blood" with an inscription that read "To those who made it possible for us to be here today..." and listed the names of those who contributed to the server fundraising drive and wanted their contribution acknowledged in game...

Alrighty...Well it seems we didn't it make it to the 1/2 way point on this drive, and that was even with somebody donating $1000 and another donating $500 and a few others donating $100 and $50 (two huge donations with a few large ones). Essentially less than a dozen people donated for this cause which I think is not such a good thing when we have a thousand or so players in the community.
Thank goodness we had some large donations!!

I'd just like to point out before I get back to writing my essay on Inflation (Har! The Irony...) that the donations shouldn't/don't have to stop here. Money is still required to keep Layo running and though Leanthar has said he'll never require (and I suppose he really can't) people to pay in order to play, it doesn't mean he won't eventually "close-up shop" if it becomes too much of a burden. (Expect a Christmas Present from me L.) :)

We're always accepting donations, as it requires around $300 a month to keep this place going. And yes, ZV, it is not allowed to ask for mandatory payment to play here.
