Title: Toran?
Post by: ParryWins on June 04, 2006, 07:26:17 AM
Is it me, or is Toran the Vatican?

Are paladins and justicers of Toran supposed to be zealous warriors, like followers of Vorax?

Or are the paladins supposed to be kind, open-armed friendly folk?

Maybe it's just me.. after reading the description of the followers of Toran, they sound pretty much like the Templars from the movie Kingdom of Heaven. Is that true, or did I misinterpret the information?

Toranite paladins are supposed to be the standart upright goodie-2-shoes, always willing to help and trying to root out evil to destroy it. Justicers have more responsabilities, but they still fit in the category above, the same applies for Champions.

However... not everyone has to be a carbon-copy of someone, and you're free to play your own type of paladin, as long as he matches the ideals set by Toran and his rules. :)

Oh, always willing to help someone? D'oh. That's a bit of a turn-off.  Do you know anything about the followers of Vorax? do they fit the description above? I'm looking for a God whose followers are always up to the task of defeating evil, but more concerned about their self and society than others.

Lucinda's Paladins are pretty cool, though not exactly what you would call "powerful". They wear robes and carry staffs so... yeah. But Vorax; I always took them as being more concearned with defeating evil and helping to keep towns and cities in order than helping out at a retirement home or a soup kitchen, if you know what I mean. Still, if you see someone in trouble, in distress, and you can help them, it's sort of a general Paladin rule that you should help them.

Eg: Someone begs for food, you have enough for yourself and a little extra. You'll give the food to the beggar, rather than keep it for later.

Still, a Paladin is no good to others unless he takes care of himself, so it doesn't mean you need to donate every gold coin you aquire to a Church or a charity, or that you can't loot corpses, or that you have to help everyone... just most everyone.  ;)

Vorax it is, although Toran, in my mind, still seems like the Templars from Kingdom Of Heaven (and that's what I would like to be [ aware of real-life morality issues.. it's roleplay here though ;O ] ). Guess Vorax is my guy.

Well, since you're going for the Templar type Paladin, I WOULD suggest going with Toran. Check here for the Paladin Oaths and look over them both.

Woohoo... maybe...

I'm not too sure I like the sound of this, though:

Jennara has enough to worry about without Paladins giving Rofireinites a bad name.

EDIT:  Wait...  What exactly is "society" if it isn't "others?"

Well, i can't really see a paladin that is more selfish lasting long in favor of either Toran, Vorx or Rofirein... I might be seeing that soon, it seems. :)

I don't think he meant a selfish Paladin. However, the steriotype of paladins often comes across as being so generous that one ends up with nothing. I think he wanted a form of Paladin that would be justified by his Oath to take good care of himself (money wise) while still being able to fight evil and injustice, and help communities. Think of it like a truly dedicated police officer. Yes, they uphold the law and help people in need, however it doesn't mean every coin they have needs to go toward helping people. (Heck, they hardly make enough to help themselves.)

Hm yes, my last post didn't come as well as i'd wanted.

I didn't mean selfish to sound like that, though i don't need to add anything up, you pretty much summed up what i would write quite well. :)

Aye, zero understands. And by society, I meant their religious society, their 'inner-circle' if you will. I would be grateful to do mundane tasks for fellow paladins, however, if a random person asks if I can run to town and fetch him some miracle whip for his sandwich, I'd refuse.

Pardon the example.
