Title: Player Built Towns
Post by: Eight-Bit on June 21, 2006, 11:48:22 PM
This idea struck me as kind of unusual at first, but after a little thought along the matter, it is something I have never seen any other servers do. It would be something unique to Layonara, atleast in my experiences in Layonara. The possibilities are pretty endless, and the amount of scripting involved is as complicated as a group of player housings. Several crafters could set up their own shops, along with an Inn, and so on.
  I like the idea.

I think thats a great idea! Also it could be made so much more (and is perhaps a good NWN2 idea) where a series of quests allow an area of wilderness to be tamed so a town/village can be forged from nothing.

The quest series would need to start off with the pacification of an area of wilderness, and the PC would need to head out with Axes etc to chop down trees for the stockade, and wooden perimeter. Get Iron to make nails etc.

If it were held on and island somewhere then the party could be stuck there without outside help (means the quest series would leave the PCs permanantly stuck on the quest island and not available for other things)

A quest to implement that'd be cool, like, somehow a group ends up being stranded on an island, and have to make their own settlement, eg. starting with a camp, then expanding to a small town, then a big one, then city etc.   Having a player made town would probably end up being harder than it sounds to do though, guess the scripters/builders would have to comment on it... it'd be extremely cool to have something like that though. *big thumbs up*

In all seriousness, would the end result be any different than North Point, Point Harbor, Dalanthar, or the myriad other towns of the land? A well-crafted town far from the normal player traffic patterns and thus completely devoid of life.
Perhaps those enthusiastic for such an endeavor could OOCly agree to revive an existing town on central. Prove that you have the staying power and numbers to make a town vibrant and alive. Now that I would gladly support.
Pranzis is actually a good candidate.
Lleion is also a good candidate.
I would OOCly support such an endeavor, but I would like to hear what players would do after it is built. What benefits does this have for the global player base?
  My two cents

1) This isn't likely to happen under NWN1
  2) Patience is a virtue  :)

I like the idea.  Good points have been made.  You would have to make sure it's a high traffic area, or the town would end up dieing under economic stress.  Another good thought would be to make sure that towns couldn't be too close together.  The only problem with finding a high traffic area, there problably will already be a default town there.  Lots to think about how it should be scripted.
Good point, Dorganath, patience.
