I lost a shield today due to what appears to be be a bug. i have also seen two other examples.
I was equipped with Tower shield and heavy pickaxe and was mining in Haven mines. I finished mining and clicked upon my quickslot for sword and shield (which is set up as a aingle button). The games played the item sound and my shield was there upon the floor. I was unable to try and pick up though (it wouldn't highlight when I moved the cursor over it) and the cursor didn't change to the 'grabbing hand'.
The shield on the floor then disapeared and i noticed that my char was actually still holding her shield. I used my orb of rememberance. I then continued to head out and went up to the next level. My shield then suddenly disapeared and was no-where to be seen.

This is a well known problem with filling your inventory too full and the cleanup script.
The cleanup script is necessary to remove corpses, unlooted drops and random junk thrown on the ground.
When you drop an item you must follow these steps or you may lose the item at the next area transition:
1) Pick up the item
2) save (remembering orb, rest, or /o c save)
3) Relog before going through any area transitions

1.)I couldn't pick the shield up - it wasn't grabbable 2.)I did 3.) Didn't try that one

This appears to be working as intended, and unfortunately your shield got eaten by the clean-up script.

A similar thing happened to me - I was helping Robert mine gold and he dropped his shield. He asked me to pick it up for him as his inventory was full, but I couldn't pick it up just like Nibor21. The shield was then lost.
