Title: damage resistance
Post by: Aqwena on July 14, 2006, 03:33:30 AM
Question:

Will multiple damage resistance items/spells stack? How can I get the highest damage resistance as a sorcerer?

For example, stone skin, zombie form, ghost armor, platinum clothes etc. or any other combination that I can't think of off the top of my head.

oh and that cloak from the fur trader in Hlint...

In general, damage resistances do not stack in NWN.  You may have multiple resistances active at one time, but only the best one for your current situation will apply at a time.

For example, if you have 5/- DR against physical damage and a 10/- DR against slashing damage, you'd only get the 10 points of resistance to a slashing attack (not 15), and you would still have the 5 points resistance against bludgeoning or piercing damage.

There may be exceptions to this, but if there are, they're rare.

Of the things you listed some provide Damage Resistance while other provide Damage Reduction.

There is a significant difference of which you should be aware.

When stone skins damage reduction reaches zero does it stop functioning and need to be recast? I am still somewhat confused about reduction and resistance

I am having difficulty figuring out the difference between Ethereal Visage and greater stone skin both are lvl 6 wiz/sorc spells. Which would protect me more from damage and what types of damage ie slashing, piercing etc. I am sorry for the silly questions but I just don't understand the difference between the 2. Does reduction give a limited amount of damage absorbed then it has to be recast?

Greater Stoneskin gives 20/+5 Damage Reduction, and absorbs damage until it reaches 10 * caster level.  Ethereal Visage only offers 10/+3 DR, but the amount of damage it absorbs has no cap.

Greater Stoneskin lasts much longer in duration than Ethereal Visage does, but is limited in its ability to absorb damage.  Ethereal visage doesn't run out due to damage, but has a short duration.

Auuumi, go with the Greaterstone skin over the Visage. The skin last Soooooo much longer and is generally more effective. make sure you have the proper enscwe(whatever) for it, it needs diamond dust to cast and Kinson can afforde to buy ya that *winks*

Greater stoneskin is better.

But ethereal visage comes with some perks like some concealment and immunity to low level spells.

  See http://nwn.layonara.com/Encyclopedia%20of%20Spells (http://nwn.layonara.com/Encyclopedia%20of%20Spells )

in fact you can go to the starthere page on LORE and navigate to pages that will answer pretty much all of your spell/class related questions.

  http://nwn.layonara.com/StartHere (http://nwn.layonara.com/StartHere )

The info on LORE is correct (or at least the most correct) and thourough AND documents all layonara specific spell changes.

Don't rely on the NWN manuals, they're not very precise, often incorrect and most of all don't include any of the changes made for layonara.

when i play i alwese kept 2 extended Ethereal Visages ready for a backup if my stoneskin failed. Though now that they have been.. balanced, there not very good for that anymore. So i never use it now.

The energy resistance feats WILL stack with an applicable item granted resistances.

So,if you have  feat to spare, this would help.
