Title: Endure Elements and Extreme Cold
Post by: SquareKnot on July 30, 2006, 09:25:03 AM
The PnP spell "Endure Elements" protects people from the effects of extreme temperatures (-50 to 140 degrees F). So it would seem that the same spell in NWN should prevent the numbness effects found in cold areas in Layonara. However, I don't think this is the case.

Am I wrong, and does it really prevent the chills?

If not, was this a conscious decision, because the NWN version provides 10/- Damage Resistance while the PnP version doesn't give any resistance or was this just not coded?

With it getting colder and colder, I'm starting to think about more ways to stay warm.

Thanks. I really like the cold system, by the way.

The NWN version provides resistance against damage, for game mechanics reasons, most likely.
As far as our cold system, it doesn't actually do damage, but rather hurts things like mobility and such...basically giving operational penalties rather than damage.
There are (or at least used to be) craftable items that can protect against the effects of the cold system.

There is in fact an item I've seen which would protect against that, but I would imagine that anything which limited cold damage (exceptional phenalope ring, for example) should help with it. Is this not the case?

It's game mechanics that's the problem here.

Hm... Could you not add something to protect against the cold effects to the items that add cold resistance?

Could we? Sure. But why? We have items that protect against the effects of the cold system.
Phenalope rings and whatnot are simply too easy, too craftable and would effectively negate the cold system.
Really...is the campfire too difficult? Only a few areas, and none that people tend to congregate in for very long, have been added to the cold system, and those areas that were cold before have been made colder.
The world is in turmoil...survival is getting more difficult. I'm not sure why we'd want to make things automatically easier.

Aye, understood; when you put it that way, I can see your point.

I'll check the "this a conscious decision" box here. I really like the cold effects, and having a lot of simple items (or a first level spell, for that matter) completely negate it would be a loss. I've actually enjoyed the campfire breaks I've had.

Thanks everyone.
