Title: Soul Mother Defense

Can this feat be changed to allow a PC to take it at any level vice 21st level and above?

If you permit, maybe not give the same one as the one at level 21, which is 5 extra soul strand but maybe something lik2 extra soul strand at lvl 13 or something like that.

People need to understand that even though there is not XP loss as severe on death as it used to be there are still conequences for dying. If we allow those that are pre epic to take a feat to stave off death longer the only purpose it will serve is to further remove some of the fear of death and people will continue to play carelessly and bash away for XP and items with little regard for the rp that death is a big deal.

  I'm quite happy with waiting until 21st for this feat...Even if that means my characters die before they get there.
  Death should have consequences and if you don't want to perm then as Dorgy said...Die less

I don't have an issue with the death system...I think it makes the game more interesting in that yes, there IS a fear of permanently biting the dust, and with that fear, you have a vested interest in keeping your character alive (as a DM, I always used the rule that when you were resurrected, you permanently lost one point of CON, and when you lost the amount of your ORIGINAL score, you were permanently toast).

However, I do have a question:  Has EVERYTHING been amped up in say, the last three or four days?  The ogres at Zainge River, whom I have fought many, many times, alone, and had very little problem, just handed me my head in short order, with me doing them little or no damage at all...and this with my wearing newer, better armor, and having help!  

Not to mention that they snatched my 8th soul strand...I understand that it's random, but I need to play the lotto...in the last six deaths (of which four were against things that two weeks ago it seemed I could wade through like a cheap kiddie pool), I have been visited by the Soul Mother FIVE times; all of this at ninth level.

Now I'm no mathematician, but if I have a 9% chance of the Soul Mother popping up, yet it happens five out of six consecutive times, that's gotta be some INCREDIBLE odds...

Have I made someone up there angry?:)

I'm not asking anything be done...hey, I knew what I was getting into, and still love the game....just had to vent a bit, and after reading this post (which yeah, at that point, I was all for something to stave off the ol' SM since she seems to like my cologne a bit too much here lately), I thought I'd throw it in here, just to let off some steam.

Thanks for listening to me rant, and if I bet on any longshots, I'll throw some of the billions I'm sure to win your way:)

This feat was added when you had to take an ECDQ to reach epic levels.

Getting some "extra lives" is something extraordinary. Which in my opinion should be reserved for people who have done some earth shacking style (Elminster-ish? :) ). So, I wouldn't actually mind if it was changed so that only the WLs could pick that feat... ;)

Ah, just noticed another post that slipped before mine... Hehe!

Well, the roll system -is- working. My character has a 14% chance to lose a Soul Strand, and yet, she managed to fail that save twice in row now (actually, the only times she has died after the soul mother's return, if I remember correctly).

But why do I say this system isn't broken? Well... I know people who have died gazillions of times without failing that save. :P

There has been no update so there has been nothing changed. Have you recently leveled? Spawns scale up with your level.

Heh.  I see your point...and I never doubted that the system works, I'm just frustrated by the fact that I've built confidence in areas; I know where I can go alone (which isn't much, but there are times when I'm just trying to gather crafting supplies where I DO go out by myself, but only to these areas where I have grown confident), and where I need to be with a super-powered group to even tread near.  

Now, it seems, that confidence is biting me on the posterior, and in a very harsh way.

Now I understand (and I'm trying to head off another blunt but very accurate truism from Dorg:)) that if this were RL, you wouldn't be able to get confident in ANY area where things like ogres, renders, and dire spiders actually turned up on a regular basis, but if you were the guy who had faced them many times before and fared very well, you would have no reason to believe that you would not fare the same in the future.

I'm wrestling now with how to keep playing my character, who has established himself as brave (perhaps even reckless, to an extent) to where it's believable...I just don't think that Creighton would be overly cautious to enter Sielwood, or Haven, or the Zainge River Bridge, places where he has bested what lurks there MANY times before.  It's just not in his nature...and I'm not ready to retire the character, but perhaps that would be the route he would go, seeing as he has a child on the way and all.

Have to think on this more...but thanks for listening!

No, I haven't recently leveled...I've been at ninth for the last 4-6 weeks, and still 200k away from tenth.

Level 9 is curse I say!!! I had 3 death strand on that level and non since *knocks on wood* :( . And no My death were not from me venturing alone, they were done with good groups.  So I say, Beware the 9th level is Curse!!  :D

Level nine is probably a curse because it is very hard to pass it, most people are stuck on it for a while. So they become rather bored and begin searching for new opportunities. These searches most likely end up in places where things eat level nine characters and thus these characters die often, the circle goes on as they continue their search.

That's what I think

The situation with such an amount of tokens in a row for a level 9 character is simply bad luck and the extreme end of bad rolls. Such an explanation certainly doesn't make a person feel better after so many tokens, but it's the truth.

I think that when you go to the bridge alone you get a spwn your level.With help you get an avarage level spawn which might have been higher.The higher lv you are the more Ogre berserkers appear.
Atleast that what I see.Maybe im wrong.

All of these responses make sense...and now that I've had time to sleep on it, the initial shock has dulled...

But talk about a run of absolutely horrific luck!

*sighs*  

I really just don't want to play another character, and I don't want to punk this one out...so I guess it's "see it through to the (in this case seemingly very likely) bitter end....

please don't scare me I'm at lvl 9 right now, and sonya just got a spell that alowes her to go into close combat instead of ranged combat all the time. I don't want her to die. I'd like her to life to the 20+ lvl's in wich I hope to get some cool things done. if the rp before that allowes it.

Know when to run, know where to run know when to strike know who to strike. Rhynn learned those lessons the hard way after too many stupid deaths. Good thing I'm fairly lucky and the Soul Mother doesn't like Rhynn meat...

I feel bad now. I've got a level 10 rouge that died 73 times by Lores count, and I've still got 0 DTs. They were all from noble actions (a form of stupidity) so if you stay smart, you won't need the feat.

yeah strange eh, I know a few people who died almsot as many time as Rain did and yet they have no dt's.  Well, happy for them but sucks for me  :(
