Title: Freelancer Combat Academy info
Post by: Pen N Popper on October 14, 2006, 08:02:57 PM
((OOC
  23Oct06
The response to this effort seems positive, so I am going to take it one step further: The Academy will begin enrolling for its first class of students.
The class of 1412 will begin as freshmen on the first of the year 1408 (November 4th). This puts graduation sometime in February. I would like no more than ten students in the first class and I expect some will not make it to graduation (for IC or OOC reasons).
To submit your application to the school, PM me on the forums with your PC's bio as it relates to wanting to attend the combat school. I will put a level limit of 15 on this first class. If you are above that you may be better suited as an instructor. Lower levels will get preference. This is a combat academy so you are expected to be able to use martial weapons in hand-to-hand combat.
This is not a school to gain XP and level fast. I am hopeful that we can get some WLs to offer classes and perhaps wave their wands at us, but that is by no means guaranteed. This is a chance for you to belong to part of a larger non-guild group of classmates, add some RP to your combat, and in general add depth to your PCs existence. You will be required to work ICly towards graduating, as that too is not guaranteed.
I envision this being the player-run equivalent to what was once the Pranzis officer corp and Mistone alliance scouts. Without any of the benefits of GM attention, but with the benefit of being more active.
Guest students and instructors will always be welcome at the classes.
  PM me with your interest!
Alright, here's my idea: I like the Fort Velensk combat arena, such nice work by our building team should be put to good use. Since I switched to my "bashing" PC, it seemed like a good time to try out some ideas I've had.
  1) You don't have to be a member of the Freelancer guild to be an instructor or a student. If you have a PC that would like to teach a combat oriented class, speak with my PC, Koppig "Pig" Varken, about being a guest instructor. If you hold the class under the Freelancer title, you will be paid in gold for your efforts.
  2) The Fort Velensk is an in-character area. These are not sessions to try out OOC tactics and PvP just because it is safe. I want these sessions to add an RP depth to normal combat-oriented gaming.
  3) The arena is not mine. This is an area open to everyone. You can start a competing school, hold tournaments, etc. No one should be under the impression that the Freelancers are in any way taking it over.
  4) Since all of our playtimes differ in timezone and length, what I am really hoping is that several people will want to RP their PCs as instructors. The Freelancers can help give your PC some publicity and prestige. Wondering how to make a good case why your 20th level weaponmaster deserves to be a world leader? Have a rogue/ranger/mage guild that is in need of some notoriety and recruiting?
  5) Students are needed too! Want to RP learning knockdown feat? How about dual wielding? Ambush tactics?
  6) Just want to come to RP being a medic to the combatants in the ring, or a bartender serving refreshing ales and juices? Are you a weapons salesman with a batch of bronze "training" weapons? You too are encouraged to come.
What to do next? Post below some specifics of what you'd like to do. For example
This is really just an effort to make some scheduled player events that can involve RP in the arena and then possibly lead to ventures out in the wild to get some XP. I'm sure it will be an evolving process as we find out what works and what doesn't.

Great response, I'm impressed!
  Here's what to do next:
Teachers, create an event on the player calendar for a time that is convenient to yourself. Be sure to make the event name something recognizable (eg. School - rapier training, Freelancer Combat Academy - Pig, etc.). I will check the calendar often, or you may PM me with the event. In either case, I will make a flier for the tavern forum threads with the Freelancer logo and include your PC's name and info you put into event.
Payment: Yes, you teachers will get paid. I need to do the payment a bit OOCly here to keep things fair. Here's the formula I'll use:
PC level * 1/2 * 1000 + ( Number of students - 2 ) * 500
The maximum payout isPC level * 1000, the minimum is half of that. You must have at least two students show up to your class to get paid. Examples:
5th level fighter teaching ambush tactics to three PCs -- 5 * 1/2 * 1000 + ( 3 - 2 ) * 500 = 3000
20th level teaching rapier use in duels of honor to seven PCs -- 20 * 1/2 * 1000 + ( 7 - 2 ) = 15000
This teaching payment is a one time thing, though I will still pay for students at 500 each going forward. (I hope everyone understands that the coins involved here are significant to Pig's back account balance.) I would hope a teacher would run at least a couple classes for this amount, though I'm not going to hold anyone to doing that if it isn't fun for them. Teachers may, of course, attend classes offered by others.
Classes should all convene in the arena but then may continue outdoors for "field" training.
There is no level limit for running a class. If your first level PC can RP teaching something that is in-character, then please do so. Obviously they should teach something that is appropriate to their level. Examples: 2nd level fighter teaching military ettiquette from his past, 1st level rogue teaching hand signals to coordinate ambush, 1st level paladin teaching care & maintenance of polearms.
Edit: If possible, try to schedule your class for Wednesdays. I am thinking that pre and post class activities could be at the Freelancer tavern. Knowing that Wednesdays are "school days" might help give this combat academy some starting power too. If that day doesn't work for you, do go ahead and schedule it for any day. Thanks!

Just me being a CPA, but should that answer be 12500?  (7-2)*500?  Or did I miss something there.  It appeared you multiplied the last part by 1000 instead.  Eredel

The Freelancer Combat Academy is open all day tomorrow.  My PC will be in the arena as much as possible to run impromptu sparring classes.  There is a scheduled event later in the day taught by PC Ireth.  After that the Freelancer's tavern in Point Harbor (a boat ride out of Fort Velensk) is also open for business with plenty of opportunities for merchants, dancers, and RP.  A portal has been provided should you be too poor from the festivities to afford the boat ride back to Mistone.

Hope to see you at one of the many Wednesday events!

Two possible students for the class of 1412.  If you have any interest in joining the academy, see me ingame tomorrow; I should be around Fort Velensk quite a bit running events there.

I'd still like to get some more teachers.  Goldbeard would like to learn some Dwarven Defenderness.  Other fun classes:  Rapiers and honorable duels, weapon masters instructing on their chosen weapon, rogues and attacking critical areas, etc. etc.
