Title: Foreign cultures
Post by: miasma_hemlock on January 04, 2007, 04:22:23 PM
This is something I've been wondering and while it's somewhat there in the handbook if you really look I'm still not clear about the details, or how you would apply them if say creating a new character..

What are the areas of Layonara where the human cultures (and this is assuming humans are supposed to be the main race) aren't based in Medieval/Fantasy Europe. It's pretty obvious that Saudaria has a Middle Eastern feel for example and Barbarian islands are like viking Iceland (it is right?)... I was wondering what other parts of the world are exotic and foreign cultures.

Like if I wanted to make a character from an Asian background is there an area that feels like ancient China...  Or tribal Africa, India, China, Mayan, Native American, Mongol or Cossack, obviously there's hundreds more...

I'm not trying to be PC and demand every type of person be represented, this is more about asking what cultural flavors of the real world correspond to Layo and are already there but not so apparent... I think it would help in coming up with player backgrounds if this information is clear... It also may inspire more human characters if there is a wide variety of cultures to model themselves after. It would also help in RP I think to be aware when you are in an area with very foreign people and architecture.

I suggest you walk through the areas you want your character to come from. It is usually easy then to assume what a culture is like. Our envirmoments make our culture, and the same people who live in Mistone would have a lot of trouble living in the Blood Desert without some social and thusly cultural adaptations.

I've played human characters from a wide range of imaginary cultures that are not truly represented in the game, or handbook, but would otherwise reasonably exist as where there are humans there is a culture formed around their gathering.

The three island Talimar, Calishan, and Alibor were formerly known as the Kingdom of Roldem and were setup to be the Eastern Asian cultures when I wrote their backgrounds.  Unfortunately Blood trashed the place before he was defeated, and the "Roldemian" culture is on a decline. See the handbook for more information

 Milo! It's alive! :)
Anyway, on the decline is putting it mildly as it was virtually destroyed. Updates will be forthcoming!

and then hundreds of thousands of true and items were donated to the relief effort... and Rodelm got a few dozen Mistone Alliance flags.  Most of the same rubble and scorchmarks on the ground remain.  Reminds me of the Red Cross and Salvation Army fiascos of recent times. :P

I don't think that's quite fair, considering there is progress that just isn't seen. Our eyes are different from our characters' eyes, after all, and too many times things that are supposed to exist in game are denounced just because for some reason it couldn't be added to the module.

I'm looking forward to seeing it in v3. hehe.

I don't think that's a very fair statement either, lonnarin,
