Title: bored while driving
Post by: Laldiien on January 08, 2007, 10:58:03 AM
Could someone start an interesting, insightful and beneficial thread?  I have a looong drive and need something to read. I've tried license plate bingo, riddlely-ree and making up limericks. (They all start with "There once was a girl from Nantucket..."). I need mental stimulation.*edited for formatting

Try being read to--books on tape or cd are available from your local library.  Great way to pass the time!

Interesting and insightful things could happen, but they wouldn't be especially beneficial, I think.

Something tells me he's a passenger, though.

I thonk he is a passanger. Do you have the interweb on this long drive? I am confused. If so, get some Enemy Territory... good game... great for long drives, apparantly...

No, not a passenger. All by myself. I thought I put my Power of Persuasion cd's in the car, but I didn't. Not interweb, Blackberry. Gah!  Still 2 hours from Richmond, with to many to go after that.

Imaginary friends are always good for stuff like that... Just stay away from the ones that tell you to drive over people... bad.

Nah seriously. I'd go with music... Something new maybe. But I'm kinda a music freak.

Been jamming to Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Aqua, but if I hear 'Barbie Girl' again, I may ram a bridge support. As far as running peoe over, I drive Hyundai. I'd tear up my suspension if I hit squirrel at highway speeds.

I know what a long dive can be, and how boaring it can be.  I think Cd's, and tapes of books is a great Idea.  Finish all the book of Harry Potter off.  Good luck in your mission to keep your Sanity :-)  I lost mine long ago.

I made it. As I post this, I am sitting ina Golden Corral, happily munching my banana pudding. You know, I never want to move back South, but I do miss the cooking. Just had Bourbon Street Chicken, turnip greens, fried chicken livers (with the requisite mayonaise), and peach bread pudding. Now I am going back to my hotel, finding a stairmaster, and working off the aforementioned dinner. Tomorrow, I do things to Citrix they never intended.

They were dead......and DEEP FRIED! Oh YEAH! Give me the gland that filters the poisons from your blood, dip it in batter, and deep fry it. Slathered with Mayo, well....Need I go on?
They weren't actually very good. They had ben sitting a while and the undersides were soggy. A tad off-putting. The greens were great, though. You just can't find that stuff in PA. I remember moving there and going to a restaurant and I asked for sweet tea. They looked at me like I had just asked for baby-flambe. Then again, if you want a decent cheesesteak, if you are below the Mason-Dixon line, give it up.

*grins happily about the mention of Pennsylvania and cheesesteaks* See! I was right! There's only one place you're getting an authentic Cheese-steak and if I can't see you in the lines of one place or the other you're not getting one!

MoonSorrow...  Nothing beats mind-bending Finnish Black Metal churning like an apocalypse in you brain, with interludes of classic folk, swords clanging and lecherous pirates yearghing.  Sounds pretty Bloodwar Thrash meets Dwarven War Opera.

Ah, but then Samael...  Forever they were an angry blitzkrieg dark metal band of incoherent madness, then one of them took up electro-blastbeat drumming and operatic doomtide synthwork.  Era One blew me away, then Xytras did a 2-disk album entirely electronic, with Zorphalax on crazed hoarse growling vocals per usual.  Here's some promotional track the band has up on their site.  Mixing Laibachesque industrial with death metal was the best alchemical formula ever.  What I also like is instead of lowering themselves to profaniy like the pop culture bigwigs, they merely substitute insaniy with very poetic descriptions of desolation with shrieky evil-muppet voices.

Laibach still... my ultimate favorite electronic experiment in orchestrated gloom.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=YBn6Mr34LGA (War cover)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4EZCl7sZniw (Das Spiel ist Aust with creative subtitles)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=sRADA7fLVpQ (way more oldschool with live instruments and people with weird cultist stares)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=YvRhOpqZO7I (life is life)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=j7cKZlkC2AI (zee final countdown... best cover ever!)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=BukDVsLS_pc (I dunno man... gears and leotards)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=8qixisUDtVo (doomish battle hymn LIVE)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=mV-q1WRZPWs (now they're REALLY getting weird...)

pffft, get yourselves some janis joplin vocals that'll make you melt just thinking about their sound, move it on the stones, sympathy for the devil, then head bang to the ozmiester, continue on up to ac/dc, go crazy for some pantera, then end with some tool.

nothing beats the classics. NOTHING.

Diary of a Madman plays daily for me...  but, Lemmy wrote No More Tears.  Motorhead plays twice over Ozzy, in honor of god-like Lemmy.

Try to get "Wikipedia" on tape/CD..or maybe even better...make it yourself ;)

Now that’s a task :) and it would probably get you into the world records

*in a tiny voice* So I'd be the only one jammin' to Cherry Poppin Daddies and Squirrel Nut Zipper?  *slinks away*

I miss southern food too.  There is only one place around here that can almost sort of make a decent gravy for chicken fried steak and it's just not quite there.

On the other hand, I've never had so much really good pizza before!  In the south, Dominos and Pizza Hut are considered "good pizza".  *shudders*

Audiobooks are my friends on long trips as I get bored of just driving or looking out the window.

Currently I'm on The Areas of My Expertise (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Areas_of_My_Expertise), one of the funniest audio books I've heard so far.  It's read by John Hodgman himself so it's a very pleasant listen.

Oh, America (The Book) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America_(The_Book)) is funny also despite already being slightly dated.

Hmmm...  Come to think of it, I have cases of audiobooks in mp3s.  From the Lord of the Rings (Unabridged) to the Lord of the Rings (BBC version) with a few Chomsky (lectures and Hegemony or Survival), several pulp sci-fi novels (Heinlein, Asimov and Clarke) and cyberpunk (Stephenson and Gibson).  I think my 45+ minute daily commute lends itself to my gorging of books.

*rolls eyes* lets hear you say that in a few years when everything has a myspace and the only way to get information is by having a myspace. as sad as it is, you KNOW it's true. Hence why i have a myspace. you gotta accept the sadness of society sooner or later man. better sooner than latter. never know what position you'll be in when you suddenly accept it ;).
