Title: Familiar Shared Spells
Post by: Tygular on February 23, 2007, 03:53:11 PM
I did a search for this subject and didn't come up with anything. I might of missed it though.

My questions is, do familiars share spells with their master when the spell is case on the master? I have a wizard and when ever I case a spell on myself, I don't see it effect my familiar.

Thanks.

Familiars don't share spells with their masters, as far as I know. If they do, boy have I been missing out...

Nah, iirc thats a 3.5 rule.

NWN1 uses the 3.0 ruleset.

I'm not entirely sure that that's how shared spells work either... but I'm not the expert on that particular rule.

Share Spells

At the master’s option, he may have any spell (but not any spell-like ability) he casts on himself also affect his familiar. The familiar must be within 5 feet at the time of casting to receive the benefit.

If the spell or effect has a duration other than instantaneous, it stops affecting the familiar if it moves farther than 5 feet away and will not affect the familiar again even if it returns to the master before the duration expires. Additionally, the master may cast a spell with a target of "You" on his familiar (as a touch range spell) instead of on himself.

A master and his familiar can share spells even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the familiar’s type (magical beast).

For example, Mialee could cast Invisibility on herself, and so long as her raven familiar stayed within 5 feet of her, it would remain invisible as well (assuming she did not choose to not extend the benefits of the spell to her raven).

Sadly, this is indeed a rule that isn't handled in NWN. I'm not sure if it's new to 3.5, but it's not something that NWN could do easily... Not with the range limitation, at least.

2.5? Er... I think you mean 3.0.

3.0 Familiar rules are identical to 3.5 rules. They didn't change a thing as far as shared spells. 2.0 also allowed the sharing of spells if I remember correctly, but I didn't feel like trying to find that book to make sure.

The change in familiars was something done in NWN.

Ah, I wasn't sure. I never played 3.0. It was out in the time period after I had stopped playing 2ED and before I reconnected with my nerdish roots.

And proud of it.

Anyhow, I wasn't sure about the 2.0 rules - I haven't had the chance to pore over my AD&D books yet, so I didn't know if there was a Shared Spell rule for familiars.

Likewise, it's been so long since I gave away my 3.0 book when I got my 3.5...

As far as I remember, there were no 2.5 rules, though IWD2 did use some odd conglomeration of 2nd and 3rd Edition rules (which I think was sometimes unofficially called "2.5" because of having nothing else to call it).

The one scary thing I discovered with spell sharing is that it works for divine spells as well.. so long as you have a familiar out the mechanics would still cast the divine spell on the familiar

Doubling the value of Bless and other such spells.. since it counts it as though the familiar cast the spell.. thus you get the stacking bonus...

That and people can buff their familiars up by buffing themselves.. and then cast "True Strike" while the familiar attacks... you get maybe... 2hits.. with it.. while the familair gets the benefit of all 9 seconds

I didn't think Spell Sharing worked in NWN. I've never noticed it with Tyeaan.

You can find such on the Vault. But that hasn't been updated since 2004 or so.

Search for.. I think a user called Demetrious and you find it.

Yes, I have seen this on action at Middle-Earth server way back. and it seemed to work just fine. There wasn't any range limitation on it as I recall. And can't place my finger on the exact name of the server. Was quite fun though.
