Title: V3 Update - A Prelude
Post by: Dorganath on February 27, 2007, 10:46:20 AM
Since in all likelihood we'll be launching V3 tonight on schedule, I thought I'd take some time to let you know what to expect and what not to expect.
As we have said in the past, we have many plans for V3, many of which will be rolled out in phases.  The first phase of this roll-out will occur tonight as we officially change from V2 to V3. This initial update deals mostly with content, and this content will form the basis of the things that will surely come over time.
With this update you will see: * Many updated areas and a few new areas.  Some old areas area also going away. * Many location name changes * New clothing options * Dyes are no longer available or needed.  Coloring of clothing and armor will now happen directly on the customization machines and will not require having the dyes in your inventory. And yes, this includes all those nifty new colors. * New creatures * New placeables * New Time-of-Day Encounter system.  Yes, this means that spawned encounters can and will change over time. Be prepared! * A new PvP system.  Use it wisely
And I'm sure there are a few other things, but we'll leave them to be surprises. There will surely be some things that are not where they used to be.
Another very important thing everyone should know....
When we move over to V3, everyone will start on West in the new starting area.  From here existing characters will have the option of portaling to another server. New characters will only have the option to jump to one of the new starting locations Port Hempstead or Fort Vehl.
For the safety of your characters, do not choose the option to return to your last saved location.  That location may no longer exist, or it may be in the middle of a new encounter area.  Don't say we didn't warn you!
I encourage everyone to read a post recently made by vgn (http://thread-view.asp?tid=35143&posts=2) before V3 goes live.  One of the key concepts to remember from his post is that there are likely to be issues with this transition, and your help in resolving them is always appreciated.  However, it's important to remember to stay calm and constructive when reporting problems, perceived bugs, etc. This transition represents huge amounts of time put in mostly by Pankoki but also members of the Project Team and the GM Team. Let's try and keep that in mind as we take our first few steps into V3.
Remember,  things will not be the same, so don't expect them to be.
But more than anything, have fun!

No, L said that before in a previous post. Port Hempstead and Fort Vehl are the starting locations now.

For your statement

"For the safety of your characters, do not choose the option to return to your last saved location. That location may no longer exist, or it may be in the middle of a new encounter area. Don't say we didn't warn you!"

For possible safety's sake, would it be adviseable to log out in a home if you own one?  If for some reason one logs in incorrectly would you suggest doing thus?

What about my ox.  If it was kept in an area that now no longer exists will it respawn somewhere else or should I move it to Port Hempstead for now?

Personally I will log out with my ox as a henchman. That way when I log back in it will appear beside me.

I will try and make sure that the "last location" option won't work, but no guarantees. About the only places that area definitely "safe" and not changing are going to be player housing, so if you wish to take that precaution, then do so.
Oxen and horses should appear beside you...we have ways of making them...not be where they were...*shifty*

About V3, the old post by L in october of '06 said that... in relation to the V3 release   "The time frame in the world will be moved forward by three to five years on the first rollout to V3 and when the next campaign begins. In RP sense most humans and half-orcs should probably be retiring but we are not going to force that since it is not forced on other races (due to there being no wipe)."  What does retiring mean and why should my 2 month old PC have to "retire" because of the v3 update.  Wouldnt it make more sense to RP him as having come to Hlint/Hempstead/Vehl then as opposed to the Hlint of 5 yrs ago?  I mean, for some of the RP with my PC, pushing him through time by 5 years would make him a Master swordsman that is probably engaged, and probably ALOT stronger...  So...  as my African American buddies might say  "Whats up wit dat?!"

Many character have been around for quite a long time. Adding 5 more years for them would make them like 70+ years old for humans. 70 wouldn't be an age where your PC goes out to the world and explores it. They would be too old.
The statements says that this wont happen, you can still play your character.

If we went by in-game time, one real life month would be about the same as an in-game year.  Humans and Half Orcs don't live that long, so a lot of them, especially older characters, should be sitting at home rather than running around killing things.  Instead of forcing characters to retire, we are ignoring that, as the red text above indicates.

I think he is referring to the many who were dragon called.  I have a Cleric who should be around 80 or so for version 3 following the timeline from when I submitted her and when version 3 starts.  Your character will be older in game but not that old yet.

OH, Cause Shiff is only like 21.... er 23 if you take into account the month and a half he has been around on Layo...  no now he's like 26-28 with V3 I guess.  well I would still think alot could happen in 5 years IG, so I still think that might make some RP weird.  Should I just RP as if hes been in V3 the whole time, making him basically still 23, but in the world of V3 layo?  Or am I thinking about it too much?

Somehow, I missed the last bit.  You can RP arrival however you want, really.  Still, five years might make a difference, and it might not.  A lot of characters could be forced to do things they normally wouldn't (like farming rather than killing things) in order to get enough to eat.  Or you can imagine that a lot of the changes are now and have been taking place since the end of the war, so that the "five year gap" is this "between campaigns" period we're in now.

*takes a deep breath*

Just one question.  Are there any Inventory Items that do not exist anymore or wont work with v3 that we should get rid of?

Which is a very very good point, remember the Dark Ages, food is scarce!

Unless it's an emerald, and then you need to give it to me. I read it in the release notes.

I was thinking about the general layout of things and how that will change with a new start location and I had one question that I think could be helpful to know the answer to before I start heading out and exploring from Port Hempstead.  Right now a new character starts in Hlint and there are low level quests that can be done and low level monsters around that are equivalent threat to the low level characters.  So my question is:  Should we expect as we start to explore that the monsters' level of difficulty will increase with distance from Port Hempstead and Fort Vehl like they do now from Hlint?  I know this is not a rule but it seemed a logical conlusion from other things I have seen.  I just wanted to confirm.  Thank you.

I think it's fairly safe to assume that the areas around the start area will be appropriate for low-level characters.
