Title: New Version Online V3
Post by: Pankoki on March 02, 2007, 10:55:09 PM
Alright, lets start V3 with a new version online thread! First step in this update is to download an updated control hak, you can snatch it here:
  Layov3 Control (http://nwn.layonara.com/downloads/files/layo_controlV3.rar) (2.28 MBytes, 2007-03-02 23:35:22)
  Now for the actual stuff:

We are proud to announce Version 3 of Layonara. This update establishes the base for all future Layonara development in the NWN game. While you wont right away see all the plans that we have for the world, the foundations are there for us to use them to spice Layonara in many different ways. These features will be slowly rolled out during the course of the year as they are polished and refined. So for now most of this first rollout is a lot of visual eye candy. Of course that's never a bad thing :)
Stay tuned for more developments, it only gets better.

Tons more to come! Stay tuned!

Many people were a part of this monumental effort to bring all this content together and even more of what is coming ahead. Lots of thanks go to them for all their work and their continuous love for this world, without them and without all of you we would not have this great place to enjoy our time.   NWN has been running for quite sometime, yet even after all these years and a second version out there we have a great following in Layonara. To say that we appreciate your presence is an understatement and we hope that you remain with us through all the new experiences we will bring to you during the next few years.
  Thank you very much!

With the excitement of all this I'll ask just to be clear:

So with the "New Features", is the list posted here to come, or have all these features already been incorporated into the current version of the game?

These are features that are in right now, though some are not yet fully implemented.
The Day/night spawn system, for example, is only used in a few places at the moment, but will eventually have much more widespread use once we see how things work out in a limited test situation.
The loot system is another example.  We have support for a brand new, more dynamic system...one that will not put healing potions on undead, for example.  This new system will be gradually phased in as we get the various drops set up and balanced and so forth.

Awww, now we can't laugh at Undead that commit suicide with potions...it was fun while it lasted at least...

Where is the link to download this update?
Title: Re: New Version Online V3
Post by: D Blaze on March 04, 2007, 08:04:11 PM
This recent update does not require a download on the player's part, it is only adjusting the world to fix some issues here and there, followed by a restart of the server, that's all.
Title: RE: New Version Online V3

Not all updates require downloads. This one did not. For those that do, we will announce as much. Otherwise, it's safe to assume there are none.

Version 3.01

Yep!  It's finally here! :)

I was a bit rushed, so I haven't yet had time to work up a proper "What's New" post, so this will have to do for now, until I can get it all typed up. For now though, here's the key things:

Central and East are now merged into one server

LOTS of brand new areas to explore

BLUE SKIES!!!

Though several contributed to this update, it absolutely would not have been possible without tons of hard work from Chongo.  This is more his update than mine, to be truthful.

Anyway, enjoy. Like I said, a more complete list will becoming when I can get it compiled.

I like the new Rest timer.  I think it will promote better RP.  Besides that we obviously have to conserve spells better.  I think it will also where we actually build a camp fire, and provide more RP time, as oppose to Rest, buff, and go.  Also we will have to find safer places to make rest time, which is also better RP.

As far as the new terrain.  I am speechless.  I had no idea NWN could be so good.

I love the new rest timer.  Once again you guys have exceeded my greatest expectations.  The fact the the timer is now remembered across servers and when you crash or relog.  This is better than it ever was.  Thanks so much for being so good at what you do.

Credits to those who contributed to this update (in no particular order): Chongo, Eorendil, Darkstorme, Weeblie, Script Wrecked and Gulnyr. Thank you all very much!

LORE has been updated to reflect the new spells and language ear system.

Those who have completed their WLDQs and have items yet coming to them will need to speak with their GM to be handed the items and told what, if anything, goes with them.  Those with rewards involving special abilities should see those abilities automatically applied.  If you don't know, ask your GM...or me.

The Fine Print (tm)

 * Yes, this means that some places may be significantly more dangerous than before due to things happening with the main campaign plot.  You will have to purposefully travel to these places in particular, but players should expect variability at all times. Proceed with caution and don't assume everything will be exactly as it “usually” is.

** This guild hall appears as any other player housing, however it has been placed specifically for the guild to which it belongs.  If you are not the authorized leader of the guild, do not attempt to purchase this house.  If you do so, you may end up forfeiting the gold you spend on the purchase. No, I'm not kidding.

Right then, go forth and enjoy!

When it's up on LORE we'll point it out.  Short version though is there's now a voice command to activate a specific ear rather than having to "use" an item, which breaks the continuity of things like sitting and such.

Full details coming, I promise.

And as with all voice commands, they're there for convenience but also to aid immersion, so please don't send them "in the clear".  It always makes me cringe when I see someone type just before logging....but that's just me.

The LORE team has updated the page on languages to include use of the new system. You may find the information here:

LORE: Language Ears (http://lore.layonara.com/Language%20Ears)

Also updated my post to include direct links for the new pages that have been created in LORE. I will update more as they become completed.

FYI, to send voice commands not-in-the clear, as in the example above, use:

Code: [Select]
/o c save

Unfortunately, when you start out, you end up copying the people who do send them in the clear, 'cause you can't see the ones who aren't. :)

does this mean it doesnt default if you only used your racial tongue any longer?
Title: Re: New Version Online V3
Post by: Acacea on March 01, 2008, 01:46:10 PM
It's just like a shortcut activation that doesn't require you to 'use' the ears all the time, which is pretty convenient if you switch often. If you "/o L say something" without activating it will still translate into whatever your default is, if that was the question.

Happy update! :)

Acacea's correct.  It doesn't change the behavior of "default" racial languages. It only gives another way to activate a particular language.

Version 3.01.5 is now online!

Once again, this one was pretty much all Chongo, so praise should go to him.  Other contributors are Script Wrecked, Weeblie and muaddib.

For this update you will need to download a new Control HAK (http://nwn.layonara.com/downloads/files/layo_controlV3r4.rar) and a new TLK file (http://nwn.layonara.com/downloads/files/layonara_v21.rar).  You can get both from the Downloads (http://forums.layonara.com/local_links.php?catid=3) page.

Anyway, on to the good stuff!
As always, thanks to all who contributed in one way or the other.  Go forth and enjoy!

The Fine Print (tm)
* The hunger/thirst system has been tweaked a bit.  The rates at which hunger and thirst progress are slightly slower now, and all food/drink items have just a little more impact than they did before.  The changes will likely be subtle, but should add up and be less burdensome overall.

** Poison durations have been increased from 3 rounds to 6 rounds across the board.  We're going to try this a bit and see how it works out.  I've considered all the arguments for and against, and while there are concerns on balance, poisons should be usable.  This isn't the minute that was suggested, but it may still be enough to get in that all-important strike before it expires.  This is a server-side adjustment which can and will be pulled at any time if it is abused in a mechanical or RP sense.

3.01.5 Addendum

 First, some general notes:

 - Everyone with a Dusty Old Tome needs to throw it in the trash, right now. Your keys too folks. There's only a handful of you, I'll be checking.
 - 'Upper' Firesteep CR is reflective of the King of Dragons residing there. The warnings are sufficient, pay attention to PC messages from the server.
 - People should read the Tale of the Broken Arc in the rumours forum for more information on all the Thunder Peak changes. A second half is coming to this, and it'll help in understanding why things are so different.

In addition to the updates listed below, there's a new system in game that will be slowly integrated over time. The first major area to incorporate this is in game right now, the second will go live in a couple weeks. Following that we'll be integrating exisiting areas as well as adding new ones. Thanks go out to Weeblie for developing the very adaptable script that I've been using for this.

So here's what this means for you.

Lore and Relic Based Adventure System

One of the constant points of contention amongst the community here is that all things, over time, become mindless killing loops. It's the nature of a PW, and as much as we strive to put in new content all the time, all things are born to become stagnant. And a lot of areas really aren't meant for the mentality that comes with this. You grow too accustomed to heading to that plot area, and it no longer feels like it carries any plot or meaning at all. It's the same thing every time, and ultimately it becomes depleted in a sense as it's simply getting too much traffic. And this is tragic as some of these regions, however big or small they may be, are not meant for this.

This new system is basically set to curb this, and offer a new medium for adventures that should begin with an excited roleplay-centric mindset.

Integrated into the droplist are relics, tidbits of lore, and other items. Right now it's pretty limited but it will go live on a grander scale in a few weeks. These items do different things. Some hold nothing more then information, lore, keys to figuring out puzzles. Others are actually relics that permit entry into a region.

How does that work? Well, here's an example thanks to Weeblie's script. You find a runestone that seems to have markings indicative of a certain region you know of up on the top of a fiery volcano. You think little of it at the time, pocket the runestone, and go on your merry way. Later in life you find a book, which details the existance of an ancient dwarven clanhome rumored to have been lost behind the 'twin fires' of that same region you know of on top of the fiery volcano. You decide to head up there and you see two lavafalls spiralling into a pit below. On approaching the falls, the runestone glows, and suddenly the earth begins to quake around you as the lavafalls separate to reveal a door. You then enter the ancient dwarven clanhome and the falls close behind you after a few moments, your runestone fades and disappears.

So, there are a few key points to this. One, it's rare to enter these areas. Two, it hopefully requires some brainpower as well as lore-based roleplay to think of these things. Three, the spirit of the region is maintained as it's always a rarity to look forward to. Four, it hopefully breaks down some of the 'adventuring company' barriers. The person who finds such a relic is now the organizer, and it is based on this alone.

What you'll also notice is the general dynamic of these regions gets away from the PW mindset. It's rare, so the reward can be balanced in a different fashion. You'll find treasure. You'll run into puzzles. The feel is a bit more like a storyline. You may even have to separate it into two sessions.

Now, on the subject of puzzles, I expect people to maintain the excitement levels of such things by not spraying the secret password to such and such once they find it out. These things are bound to happen, but if you want to do your part in helping this server maintain atmosphere, then you'll keep your mouth shut, and at the very least, keep such transfer of information to moments of excellent roleplay opportunity. If I see someone do this "//hey - don't forget to avoid the pressure plate labelled X dude, you only press on Y. Have fun!".... you are so dead. L or Dorg may fire me, but I will seriously consider putting you in a locked room with 100 invulnerable rust monsters. Be cool and use some wit in how you choose to, or refrain from, delivering information. It's pretty easy to do.

Again, we're in a bit of a trial phase with this. In time it'll be integrated into the world more. In a couple weeks a gigantic new region under this system will open up which has layered levels so that it's more accessible for varying levels. Following that it'll just start cropping up here and there.

We hope you like it. And with hope, you won't even notice it for a long time... until one day you find that strange ancient tome on a body somewhere and begin to read...

I might be wrong here but I am fairly certain that this system was dropped due to too much coding needed and the shift of development hours from some of the builders to the new MMO instead of the nwn version of Layo

Not so much "dropped" and "indefinitely suspended" due to manpower issues.  Unfortunately I cannot say whether it will ever see the light of day, because I simply don't know.  Everything is still "in-place" for it, however.

Sadly, this was one of those great ideas that fell victim to circumstances.

* Special note on horse system fixes: By all estimation, these things people are seeing are due to lag in a PW environment during the dismount process. By all accounts, the things that people are seeing should not happen at all, as Bioware's code accounts for these things already.  All I have done is to reorder things a bit and also add in some "clean-up" code.  If footsteps and collision circle issues persist, the first course of action is to re-log.  You may need to do this twice, but they should clear up when re-logging. This procedure worked in testing, but I can't catch all of these sorts of occurrances on my test system because of the added dynamics of a live server.

Update 3.02.3 is now online!!!

The bulk of the effort and time for this one goes to Chongo, with a nice assist from Script Wrecked.

Area additions and updates
As given here:  http://forums.layonara.com/general-discussion/203022-small-version-request.html
 - Great Spikes integrated
- "Relic entry" areas opened
- Numerous creatures rebalanced
- Miscellaneous area bug fixes
- Added monument to Haven City
- Tomb of the Lost Hero updated

Other bugs
-
Grannoch bindstone works now.  Anyone bound to this stone will need to re-bind
- Relogging should solve the "horse on the head" issue, if another mount/dismount cycle does not.
- Square wooden table deed should work properly and be available in unlimited quantities from all furniture vendors

Other additions
- Using the special property of a house key inside the house pertaining to that key will repopulate the furniture after a reset.

Once again, the bulk of the credit for this one goes to Chongo and Script Wrecked.

Go forth!  Enjoy!
