Title: A Perennial Suggestion
Post by: darkstorme on March 13, 2007, 04:47:28 PM
While I realize this has been suggested a number of times, recent developments with TinyMCE suggests to me that the time is now for implementation... particularly as we've just moved to the new forum design:

A spellchecker.  TinyMCE (http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/index.php) has an opensource spellchecker built into their WYSIWYG editor, and it doesn't take much to implement.

Running posts through OpenOffice or Word works, of course... but few people want to write their posts in a separate program - particularly if they're posting on a work computer, a public computer, or just someone else's computer.

*shrugs*  I think it might contribute to communication on the forum, so I'm throwing this out to the community and the Team for consideration.  Thanks!

what i do is i write it here ( lex cdt ) then copy paste in word do the spell check copy past back here. Most spell checker i have seen on forums are rather limited, but aye if a good one could be found this would be a great addition.

Well, more to the point, this would mean that not just CDT posts (or similar, long posts) would get spell-checked - even simple posts like this one would be open to digital scrutiny.  Moreover, not everyone may have Word at their disposal - as I said in my initial post, some addicts (*raises hand sheepishly*) have even posted from public computers, say at the library, which serve as little more than an internet terminal.  And while there are online spell-checkers (http://www.spellcheck.net), bringing it to the forum itself would be just that little bit more convenient.

@Hawklen - I had the old spell check extension for Firefox 1.x - I  personally prefer the new one in 2.0, but either way you're limited to a browser.  The beauty of a forum-based spell check is that it's platform-independent.  Opera, Firefox, IE or whichever web browser suits your fancy - even handhelds or cellphones.

The Firefox with Google Toolbar provides this option at any site you browse. You can spellcheck whenever you're entering text on the web and you will be supporting Layonara.

Attached are a couple screenshots of how it works.

It also has quite a few other nifty features.  So next time you see that ad somewhere on our forums, take the time to consider jumping from IE or upgrade your FireFox to use the Google Toolbar.

Oh i have the lastest version already, but the actual gramar and spell checking is rather poor, compared to other on-website gramar and spellcheckers  i have seen.
