gamemaster:
the following is a tech. question concerning NWN: Diamond that i have had no help with yet on atarisupport.com
when i get to the menu that lists "play" and click the button, i am taken through the cinematics only to have my screen turn black when i reach the area i think is the place where i can begin the game
though my screen is black i have control of a single hand (my mouse), which i can move where i like
i can even click buttons and hear the music
do you know of anything i can do to fix this?
what i have done is:
disabled 3rd party applications
update of directx
update of video drivers
update of sound drivers
update of monitor (though the download told me i did not need it or already had the update)
critical rebuild
none of the above has worked
have you any ideas?
thanks,
realmseeker
p.s.
my system:
Windows XP
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500
Pentium 4
766MB RAM
directx 9.0c

No GM but the only way I know so far is not up-dating, but "down-dating" them.
The drivers I have installed installed are 66.93
If you want a link or the drivers or anything else, let me know ;)

EDIT: But ofcourse there may appear other problems with newer games, it is just a commom problem NWN seems to have with the new drivers
-
how do i "down-date"?
-
You have to download an older version, for example the version I posted works with NWN, delete the old drivers and install the new ones :)
-
my ignorance prevents me from doing so
i do not know how to delete a driver
i also do not know where to find your post of the stated driver
with respect, would you be willing to explain the details
i thank you greatly

No problem, I'll try my best ;)
(one problem is I'm from germany and I will try to translate the words from the german windows-version)
So click on what is called "arbeitsplatz" here must be something with "working...." on your desktop. The symbol in thr left top of the screen, looking like a computer and open it.
A window should open showing your drives (CD; DVD; Hrad-drives and so on)
On the left side of this window there is one point "software" click on it and a new window should show up, search for the entry that reads "NVidia drivers" (possible it now contains soething with ForceWear in the newer version)
Click on that entry and it will be underlined blue and a button "change /delete" should show up right.
Click yes and follow the instuctions.
Make sure you have the new driver downloaded before you do so.
After you deleted the drivers restart your PC. Windows XP will find the graphic card when it has booted and automatically start a process to install the drivers, abort this one if it shows up.
Instead of that just start the downloaded driver and install it!
...oh, here is a link for the driver that worked for me Nvidia Forceware 66.93 :: Hardwaretreiber.de :: neue Treiber f (http://www.hardwaretreiber.de/Article174.html)
Just be aware you could have problems with other, newer Games

I tried digging up older drivers and gave up since Nvidia no longer supports all cards in one package. I just have a mark on my monitor where the load button is at, I click it then I can see the screen, hit cancel and then I can also see the normal screen. This was broken by Nvidia in my case and no one knows if they will fix it, NWN is after all quite old.
-
i am wary of any possible problems which might occur of i use a german format in an english format machine
i think my screen is all black and i can find no part that would make me think i could get around the issue
i need to think about this
-
i intend to check this thread often
i'm open to all approaches
-
The drivers are not language-specific.
-
this sounds like the thing rhynn ran into and she just clicks at random i think till she finds the spot
unless im mistaken
-
The menu is still there, you just need to click where the load button is at,even though you can't see it, then cancel out and the screen will appear normally.
You'll need to guess where the button is at based on where it normally is at. Also I think if you open it windowed you will see everything as normal.
There is a thread on the bioware forums for this but I cant get there from work.
-
i'm giving it a try now...
-
where abouts would the load button be in the screen?
-
after i locate the load button will the cancel button appear?
-
it worked!
-
i hit "thanks" to all the replies i recieved
a person might have recieved more than one "thanks" on record
is this poor etiquette for this realm?
-
The load button is from the middle of the screen abit down, and I think you wont see the cancel button but you here a "click" and pressing "sec" should work and if the menu show up after that you have done i t right, if not... go on clicking...
oh, the drivers I linked are eglish, just my system is German and so it is hard to explain to you because my names/titles for the menus are different.
This clickking around is one solutiona nd you have to see how the game runs. Maybe your lucky and it works fine or your not (like me) and you have mssing and wrong displayed textures.
Thats the main reason for me to use the old drivers.
If you have problem with the old drivers, updating back again is no problem.
-OooOOoOOoopss... too late, glad it work now!

As the person who presses the Thanks button more than anyone else on the forums, I would have to say it's not poor etiquette. But thanks! :)
