Title: Giving up smoking.....
Post by: DMOE on November 22, 2007, 03:05:54 PM
I am about to try and give up smoking....

This is the second time I will be attempting it....I did the first time manage it and was actually nicotine free for a good 7 odd years...

I know, from my previous experience that I can be truly foul and evil...Before some bright spark asks "How will we tell?"...Trust me, you'll be able to tell ;)

I of course will be doing my level best to not let any foul moodness spill over into other things, but I am, after all....only human.

If I get into an IC argument, and send you a tell saying I need to walk away....please, please let it drop.  I'll happily discuss it in PM's or re-visit it at a later date but I would hate to vent my OOC frustrations IC.  That having been said, also remember that not all of my characters are nice so depending on the argument, it could actually be all IC

Also, if I could ask any smokers I may go on trips with to try and avoid calling a smoke break, it will really help not set off my cravings.  Let's see if we can come up the daftest non smoking related reason we can afk so those who may still be smoking can go feed their demon instead.

"afk to dance round the room in a pink tutu for 5 minutes" for example :)

That's about pretty much it!

Hey, that's cool!
I stopped smoking a while ago, too. I wish you the bets of luck with it, really.

...but one question remains... bloody why did you start again after 7 YEARS?!?!?!

However, you'll make it!

I have never smoked before but I do have bad habits that I would like to break.  I wish you the best and hope it happens as quickly and painlessly has possible.  :)

I quit seven years ago and it was one of the hardest things to do.  But I went through a program with the patches.  It made it easier for the family to live with me. ;)   Just hang in there and get through each craving one at a time.  It is well worth it. Good luck!!

What if we're in a quest and a house is burning, pouring a lot of "smoke".  Should we say "avoid the thick wispy blueish-grey cloud that emits from that burning house?"

How about the pipeweed you pass IG.  Will that cause you greif?

I'm just kidding by the way.  I've quit for 3 years now and just lately I've been having an occasional cigarrette at work dinners and seminars.  Even though it's probably one every fourtnight, I'm already feeling the lure back to them.  I've put an abosulte stop to them, even the rare occasional one.  Lesson is if you quite, don't think you can do the occasional smoke.  It's way too tough.

Cheers,
Polak76

Yes you should! ;)

Oh and I should warn anyone with words of wisdom......

Last time I gave up smoking, after a week of being incapable of smoking due to risking hospitalisation if I did....My Father decided to say

"You only have to give up one cigarette....the first one of the day"

I threw something at him ;)

After helping my girlfriend keep the willpower to stay quit, I know how hard it can be.

You've got a support group here that's large and that cares about you as a person, rather than just another bastion of non-smokerdom. We're rooting for you.

Good luck, if you aren't already I would recommend a program (like 12 steps or something).  I think the statistics are pretty clear that success rates are improved with a program.

*a cheer squad comprised solely of Johnny Depps starts following DMOE around, chanting, "go Deemoe, you can do it, you don't need it, let it go-o"*

Is Johnny Depp the poster boy for clean living that we should enlist to our cheer squad for DMOE?

I get the thought process ... maybe someone who doesn't look like they smoke twelve packs a day would be better ... ummmm *thinks who DMOE might be strong for who is also somewhat wholesome looking* ... a cheer squad of Ben Affleckses or Ryan Reynoldses?

O.o

It's easier to quit and be done with it than it is to deal with the results of a life spent smoking.

Make a list of the reasons of why you're quitting, and when you're really mad, need a quick smoke, or just need a morale boost, you have your list of reasons to look at.

Mine is two pages, back and front.

Nope....Johnny Depp rolls his own from drum tobacco and liquorice papers...

Is it worrying I actually know that?

And yuck!!!

Nice try Pseudo....

Nathan Fillion.....And yeah....I had to think about that one....Seems I'm not so much into the wholesome looking guys ;)

Good luck with your awesome epic quest against the smoke that terrorizes your physical body!

PS: I'll try to refrain from using the //afk smokes and say things like *he kneels down to meditate for a brief while, and seems absent to all things* and so on ;)

Good luck with quitting... stick with it, perseverance, pig headed pride and chewing gum (lots of chewing gum) is what saw me through when I quit nearly 3 years ago - haven't looked back since.

p.s. - My method of quitting cold turkey, the day I moved into my in laws house for 2 months while work was being finished on my own.... Not Good!!!!  Try the patches, try the gum, from what I hear they do help :)

@DMOE: hope your doing fine and it works so far?

@Cariad: Congratulations!

And you both CAN do it.... so do it, don't try....simply do it ;)

I think the best way to call for an AFK is a Bio or Drinks break. I've never smoked, but I need those often enough. THIRST. And what it leads to. xD

True, I do have a non-mandatory bio-break everytime I go for smokes, but I would like to RP the break in some way too :)

Post by: DMOE on December 13, 2007, 03:14:16 AM
Well it's been just over 2 1/2 weeks on the patches....

Could have another 3-4 months on said patches to ween me off slowly

Have had one minor lapse where that 10 pack of Marlborough looked so very good.....It was not helped by the fact as part of my job I sell cigarettes

I'm still having insane mood swings and I want to be able to sleep!!!!

I suffer from insomnia often but had finally managed to get it under control.....but the reduction of nicotine in my system has once again effected my sleeping pattern and pretty much nothing makes me sleepy! *pouts*

It's a long time since I gave up smoking last time and I had completely forgotten just how rubbish you can feel just because *sighs*

The kids are still alive although some days I could quite cheerfully throttle the entire world if only they would be nice enough to form an orderly line for me.

Thank you to all those who have made themselves available to be ranted at and still continue to do so!

Can we not just have the world form an orderly line and every time I'm stressed I'll call the next one forward? ;)

*giggles*  Sugarless gum used in that quantity makes one belch big-time, I've been told.

It took me 4 real tries at quitting before I could actually get it right.  And if you are in the beginning stages of quitting I know EXACTLY what you are going through.  There is no method that is perfect and each one works differently for different people.  A few things that I found work very well to give up smoking

1. Become an alcoholic - whats better then giving up one addiction for another
2. Eat lots, then eat alot more, then eat even more, til the point you can no longer get off the couch to go buy cigarettes
3. Take up exercise... on the other hand, nix that.. too strenuous.. just play Layonar more instead, both hands on the keyboard at all times
4. Suck on a straw, it worked for me!
5. Suck on anything else, sucking is good for many things, trust me
6. Take up a pipe or cigar.. At least they are not cigarettes?
7. Drugs, lots of drugs to numb yourself.  Also for the same reason you would become an alcoholic.
8. Beat your kids... I haven't tried this one, but it seems to work for others
9. Have I said play more Layonara with both hands on the keyboard yet?
10.  And lastly pipe nicotene right into your blood stream, if you cant have cigs the nic fix will be amazing in the morning

*clutches the cup of coffee tightly*

Give up one addiction for another?

Hmmmmm....would that be why I agreed to the very sexy coffee machine meaning I would actually drink coffee because it was nice and no effort to make?

Oh I'd never do that.....*grins*

And of course....Mr Depp would get to be at the back of the aforementioned line ;)

Oh should anyone want to volunteer to be killed in a new and intresting way to reduce my stress levels.....feel free to PM me :)

2.5 weeks is great !   One minute, one hour, one day at a time and it does get easier... thought I've been smoke free for about 5 years and had a MAJOR craving on the weekend ... came like a wave and left 10 min later..

I found after the first 2 -3 weeks it was much easier...

Keep at it and good work

As for throttling - Can I mail you a few clients for Christmas?
