Title: invis bug in The Rift ?
Post by: jan on January 20, 2008, 08:25:50 PM
Not sure if this a bug or not .

After mining diamonds and killing dark elves i went back up by ways of the rope because the dark elf  city is suicide for my character .
When done with climbing i was attacked as normally by the two giants there on the way back , but this time they were invis and one used a stardust i think .

While they are invis , their sneak-attacks keep working and even facing them with expertise on didn't change that .
I managed to kill one and get the other to half his life i think before i fell .

No real loss except a little coins , but invis giants using stardust's in a non magic zone seems a bit weird to me .

I re-spawned and tried gm-channel , but seemingly no one was on , so i guess its a bug .

I could perfectly see the one i was traveling with , so i guess it wasn't a visual bug from my side .
The fact that the giants could keep attacking with sneak attacks while i was hitting them seems to point again that it wasn't something on my side .

Jan A.K.A. Barion .

this happend around 11-30 PM GMT forumclock .I dont have logs or screenshots since my logrotator isnt working and i was too surpriced it even happening that i forgot to take some screenshots.

If they stayed truly invisible, it was quite likely that well-known Bioware display issue where creatures do not appear. If it were a haze/semi-transparent visage, it might have been Improved Invis.  A bit more information about what you have seen would help to understand the details of this issue.

As for giants using stardusts in a dead magic zone, this is along the lines of undead using healing potions in their inventories.  These items get generated automatically by the loot system and sometimes there are odd things that happen as a result. I'm fairly positive that the giants are not simply equipped with these stardusts by default.

Question, and perhaps clarification of previous point: If one used a stardust, wouldn't that stardust's effect be canceled by the DMZ, regardless of how it got it? Drops are drops, and mobs sometimes use them unexpectedly, but... Shouldn't all magical (read: spell-like) effects be annulled?

Yes and no.

IC-ly: It applies to both. But sometimes, magical "spells" from monsters in DMZ aren't truly magical in nature...

Mechanically: While it applies to PCs, DMZ doesn't apply to monsters (from experience)...

Pretty much what Weeblie said.  I've not delved into it deeply enough to know for sure where the difference in handling comes from (i.e. script code or Bioware weirdness), but that does seem to be the case.

In most cases, creatures in DMZs are built to not use "magic" as such, and any spell-like things they seem to do should be considered abilities and not spells/magic.

As for flukes of inventory and those items being used by monsters...we have a supported system for changing that, in place and ready to roll, but it would take a pretty significant dedication in man-hours to properly balance and configure loot drops for these kinds of cases.

They were semi-transparent , meaning that when i  moved close enough and faced them directly i could see them .
Even in combat hitting them though they kept sneak-attacking .
