Title: You're HOW old?!
Post by: lonnarin on July 01, 2008, 05:26:24 PM
Just got curious looking at the in Game Time Link and crunched the numbers according to the basic formula, Starting Age + (Current Date - Character Approval Date) using the in game time converter link... Layonara Time Converter (http://www.netgod.org/cgi-bin/ltc.cgi)

Egads!

Bjornigar Ironguts: Was already pretty old at 132 years in the submission, is now 187.  Not too bad for a dwarf.

Farros Galdor: started at the age of 23.  Now he's rather venerable at the ripe old age of 82!

Earl Frogstomper: started at the age of 38, now approaching 70!  For such an old geezerly human, he's got pretty big muscles.  I don't think he can even count that high, so in his heart he'll always be a 14 year old boy, hahah.

Kor Gromak: an old wrinkled orc now pushing 53.  All those years in exhile and regenerating his backbone have been good to him.

Grovel Foaming Wolf: 30 year old goblin druid.  Not bad at all, but I've only had him for less than a year and 12 years went by in that time.

Kahzrag Gloom: my newbie little dark dwarf started a little over a month ago is a mere babe in comparison to all of these (in dwarf year at least) at 52.  That's still about 18 in human years.

Pretty fun stuff.  Curious to see how old some of your characters are?  Click the link above and dig up those old character submission threads, heheh.

Of course nobody feel pressured to retire on age alone... from the first mention of Bloodstone in the timeline to the day of his death (-825 to 1402) a good 2227 years had passed.  :D

1390-1435... 45 years. At eighteen when he started, that puts Pyyran at sixty-three.

Post by: Acacea on July 01, 2008, 05:43:21 PM
Remember that there are decent IC reasons to stave off retiring characters for those that absolutely can't stand it... we can't pretend that they are in fact 29 forever, but explanations exist as to why they are not bed ridden :) Stretched ones, but at least something to fall back on!

Acacea is about 72, give or take a few as she doesn't know exactly how old she was when she was adopted, hehe. Not really a huge issue for a halfling unless she gains 80 pounds and galleonesque hips upon hitting the century mark.

Hey, Pyyran's rocking the old-man kick. Between the Bindstones and the MASSIVE amounts of divine healing that have been pumped through him, his body has another good forty or fifty years left in it, and half that at adventuring strength.

His soul, on the other hand, doesn't have much left to hold it to Layo.

It is all the healing potions they drink that keeps them young.

Wren start age 100 (young start age for a elf) now 141. Still young and handsome LOL

Heh, mine was more of a High Priest of a deity pumping every bit of divine energy he could channel into him, but, y'know. Same thing. ;)

Title: Re: You're HOW old?!

Well, I'd certainly suspect regeneration and healing magic to be a big part of it.  The only reason we even age is that our body cells slow down regenerating.  Throwing magic into the mix and an occasional curing of disease would effectively boilster your immune system and put some pep in your mitosis cycles.  All that cartilidge would grow back into place, an excellent cure for arthritis!

Of course with all the hundreds upon thousands of NPC monster deaths we go through just before level 10, maybe we're getting a wee bit of windfall from Soul Mother for sending her so many tastey Souls.  Every goblin tribe vanquished is like sending her a box of chocolates. :P

Ahh.. but sadly all that good healing magic is probably undone by our addicition to haste spells and the like... can't imagine they do the body much good at all.

Carr is about 67. He's been running about for half a century.

For me to calculate Kenelm's I'd need his file's creation date. All I know is that he's over 20.

I figure I created my characters not too long after approval - in Pyyran's case, maybe an hour or two. So check the timestamp! :)

Steel started at 18 and now he's 59. Goodness. Since his life-span isn't entirely defined, I've always RPed him as not having physically changed a whole lot since he was in his twenties.

Barion was created around 5th off January 2005 .

That makes him 84 now since he was created as a 32 year old , no wonder he's getting slower but luckily his intelligence is high enough to prevent his memory from going weak ;)

BAH, no stealing the protectors holy walking cane! :P

A little addition to Storolds age info;

Ethan Alexander Doesscha and Jonnathan Tristen Doesscha(Twins); 17 years

Sarrah Doesscha; 15 years

Unknow(son) Doesscha; 10 years(I think, don't have an exact date here. And to all OOC speculators this is a child of Mylindra and Storold not some child Storold has with someone else)

I dont think I did this right...  1382 to 1485..  103 and was 18 when made does that make Quantum old?

The current year is 1435 not 1485 so Quantum would be 71 years now

I started playing Drexia in 1410, and she was 125 (I was told 120 was the minimum age, and 5^3 seemed a more meaningful age), so she's 150 now, and still views herself as being very young.

Pallena started when she was 26, in 1413, which means she's 49... I still play her as a mid to late 20s character, just can't wrap my head around time passing that quickly, just not enough ooc time to RP changing that much.
And well, I know it doesn't exist in Layo, and she's not close to being the level for it even if it did, but I still pretend she has this (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/druid.htm#druidTimelessBody) and figure a resourceful druid has to have figured out -some- way to stay looking young. :p

Xan (human) was 24 when he left the Watch of Port Hempstead... he is now 62
Allean (half-elves) left the woods at 25 and is back in them at 64 now (helping Wayfare from time to time though)
Grohin (do I need to tell ;)  ) was 70 when he had to leave his clan home and is now 97
Oma (Witch... err Human) left her farm at 57 and has had a lot of fun for 18 years now. So she is 75.. all her teeth and still kicking... and drinking too :D .

Of course, after seeing some of these classic pro-wrestlers physiques in their older years, there's no doubt in my mind that a 70-80 something, if active enough, could keep up with the young uns.  ESPECIALLY with all the magic healing we get.

Vince McMahon: Age 62 http://www.catchclub.com/catch/Images/VinceMcmahon/23.jpg
http://www.wrestlemag.com/images/vince_muscle.jpg

He seriously scares me sometimes.  Seems getting knocked out by Bret Hart made him hit the gym 8 hours a day!

And we've all seen the Hulkster as of late, looking pretty ripped for an "old geezer"  http://images.starpulse.com/Photos/Previews/Hulk-Hogan-mm02.jpg  That's him at 54.

Ric Flair was moving around pretty well for a 59 year old when he finally retired.  Ric Flair says goodbye at mania 24 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/11302725@N03/2407103913/in/photostream/)

Kevin Nash (Big Daddy Diesel) at age 48... http://ww1.prweb.com/prfiles/2007/04/17/519708/nash.jpg

Hacksaw Jim Duggan at age 54 is still kicking as well.  http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f5/Hacksaw-Jim-Duggan-Entrance%2C-RLA-Melb-10.11.2007_filtered.jpg  after battling kidney cancer as well.

And though he's resorting to the use of a feral leprechaun to win his matches, Dave Finlay turns 50 this october... Finlay and hornswaggle on Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/11302725@N03/2407090361/)

So you see, age doesn't mean a thing if you're crazy enough.  There's steroids and human growth hormone usually involved in these cases, but hey, those aren't nearly as effective as strength rings and bulls strength spells.

The funniest thing is that Vince is the oldest of them all, and could probably rip my arms off.

Arnold Scharzennegar is 60 now, and Sylvester Stallone was utterly scary at 61 in the latest Rambo flick.

Tod's 50... I don't think I can play him as that, he's too immature to be 50. He just took a liking to women, can that be natural to be 50 and then just started to be interested in girls? I still play him as if he was in his twenties, it's sort of hard to remember how fast time flies.

Halflings have pretty long lives, though.  Depending who you ask (IC or OOC), it wouldn't be uncommon for a halfling to spend a hundred years or more being wild and free before finally settling down, and some may not ever settle down.

Also, maturity is kind of subjective.  Jennara is 80 and loves playing tag with children and rolling down grassy hills and all sorts of "immature" fun stuff like that.  It's all part of being halfling, I guess.

17 game years have passed since the first post.

Earl is now 86.  Farros is 99.  Egads, time flies when you're a drunkard!  With Earl I'll have him winding down, maybe even request an honorable permadeath via CDQ soon.  Farros, meh... Tiefers have some strange genetics.  I may have him die sometime between NWN and the MMORPG.  then again, I might request for him to be some villain in the game, lol!  At 20th lvl, it's time to start planning his WLCDQ.

Bjorn is 204.  That's hardly old for a dwarf.  Also 20th level.  Have to figure out what direction I want to take him in.  Right now he seems to be shifting LG and on some mission to feed the world tasty pies.

Grovel is 47.  Eeek!  He's going to have to start watching himself.

Fenthon is just 27.  He's doing better than I am now.

Annie is 30 in brownie years.  Still pretty young.

Although Ed hasn't weighed in on it, I have always considered binding oneself to a Bindstone, somehow stops the physical deterioration that comes from aging.   Seriously, these things keep you from dying by every other cause, I don't see why age wouldn't be included.

Of course it would be nice (or at least I think it would be nice :) ), if age gave rise to a deterioration of your stats, but we can't do that. However, as time goes by your character does age. As there's nothing we can do really to physically affect your char, it remains as he was created at age 18. However, your character has probably been healed (by potions, magic, whatever) so often, that it may have slowed it down or something. And there's of course the bindstone thing, which I can easily argue for that it would hasten the ageing process :) so I'm more in favor of the healing magic/potion thing.

That is from a longer post in this thread (http://forums.layonara.com/roleplaying/109403-ageing.html), with all sorts of nice chatter about aging.
Title: Re: You're HOW old?!
Post by: lonnarin on July 02, 2009, 04:55:37 PM
Besides, isn't Moraken going on several centuries now?  And Bloodstone was several thousand years old.  If we start enforcing age limits on characters, NPCs would have to follow.  And that would mean a new handbook revision every 2 years.  I think captain Garent must have been pushing 200 by the time he had his daughter take over, and she's probably over 60 currently. :P

Beyond just being difficult to code, the time dilation get's pretty significant.  Say you have a 4-part quest which runs every 2 weeks.  In the quest, it is usually time-bubbled, which means that the event is pretty much taking the few days it takes to actually run, and you're not really supposed to RP having been in that quest until it is completely over.  You could have a quest series that takes 2-3 months to complete in real-time, which would according to the game-clock take more than a year.  Still, these events could take just a few days of RPable game time.

Then when you take a half-hour talking to the NPC in-game, you see that several gametime hours pass by.  Spells that would normally last half a day poof int he time it takes for an old man to tell you about his grandchildren.  This doesn't mean of course that the NPC is speaking at a rate of one word per every 5 minutes in Treebeard treantspeak, but that the perceptual half-hour of conversation takes precedence.

So yeah, there's a lot of time-dilation going on that the set game-time doesn't cover.  This would also include running from town to town or sailing from continent to continent in less than a game hour when it would take 3 months at least for a 1600s Spanish Galleon to sail from Europe to America. and full nights rests that take less than 10 seconds after pressing the R-button.

No argument with what was said, just a little off-topic comment:

Sailing is faster than we think sometimes.  Not in-game instantaneous, of course, but not necessarily ongoing months, either.  In 1493, Columbus's fleet set sail from the Canary Islands on October 13 and spotted Dominica in the Caribbean on November 3.  That's about 3000 miles in three weeks, which (at least to me for whatever reason) seems pretty fast.  If we imagine that Layonara's winds are similar to Earth's, sailing from Lor to Vehl at a speed similar to Columbus's fleet would take about three and a half weeks (it's roughly 3500 miles between the two).

To continue on the off-topic-ness...

That is only about 6-7 knots on the average. That's not fast at all, its just that sailing is a 24 hours a day.

Random quasi-related thoughts lead to more thoughts and elaboration is the bread and butter of invention and innovation.
