Title: Canadian National Do-Not-Call List
Post by: OneST8 on October 01, 2008, 07:53:29 AM
It's official folks! Canada's national do-not-call list has been setup and is now accepting registrations for the list!

The easiest way to sign up is to go to their website and register online:

https://www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/insnum-regnum-eng (https://www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/insnum-regnum-eng)

Here's a decent article on the matter:

Canadians clog no-telemarketing lines - Nova Scotia News - TheChronicleHerald.ca (http://thechronicleherald.ca/Business/1082208.html)

Enjoy!

Maybe if you're getting Canadian telemarketers!

Now if only they enforced the list by tracing the signal to the origin of the call, then relaying that geographical location to the Star Wars project.  Fines only scare away the small companies without ample legal departments.  Death lasers from space?  No more calls from Alderaan!

$15,000.00 in fines for every call... and you only need to supply the time of the call and the number called from in order to file the complaint... I think it'll be a useful deterrent even if it's not a complete solution to the problem.

The problem is the method of enforcement.

We have a do-not-call list (http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/donotcall/) here in the US, and FCC rules about unsolicited telephone advertisements... the problem is that you generally can't file class action suits against the telemarketing companies, no individual cares enough to file a suit (and it's not like you're going to recoup legal fees by doing so), and the fines aren't used independently of a law suit...
Our regulations have helped, but not so much as one might hope.

good luck to Canada, I hope you do better than we have down here...

Well, if you had third degree burns over 6% of your skin, spent 8 days in the hospital, and needed skin grafting you might want to sue too (especially when McDonaold's refused to settle). Yes, there's a lot of frivolous lawsuits, but liebeck v.mcdonald's is not one.

Yep. But my common sense would say "do not put that soldering hot liquid in between your legs while doing something that takes your concentration away from it" :)

Edit: Heh, I had a long post here, but the forums clipped it out when I posted.

Which is ironic, because lawsuits are all based off the principle of re-distribution of wealth.
