Title: how many items are in your inventory?
Post by: jrizz on April 17, 2009, 09:14:32 PM
Picking up from this thread:

 http://forums.layonara.com/layonara-server/225072-layonara-3-21-2-patch-release.html

Stacked items count as one item.

Wren's total item count now is 224 items. When he goes collecting he collects and then goes and drops off or crafts right away.

Got Wren down to under 200 items and his bic file is 294kb.

Just pointing out a post made by Dorg in the past stating that Stacked items counted not as one item but as the number of item in the stack.

http://forums.layonara.com/424244-post14.html

Quote from: Dorganath
A couple things to point out....
On storage facilities...we still need to limit the number of items that can be stored in a chest. The more items (especially if they're stackable) then the more lag when they're opened and closed.
On stackability, I dare say that making things more stackable, whether increasing stack size or making an item stackable that is currently not, will not do much to discourage the practice of hoarding such items in one's inventory. It's not the number of stacks, it's the number of items that's the problem. by having most CNR things non-stackable (at least the raw CNR). we're effectively trying to limit how many of something peole can carry around.
Let me throw some numbers at you. Take a large chest that can be bought for housing. You can store 30 items in that chest. If the item is stackable, like gem dusts, then that number increases to 300 right off. Increase the stack size to 20 and now that's 600 items. Item/object creation in NWN is one of the most "expensive" operations in terms of CPU usage, which of course contributes to lag.

I might suggest a simpler solution, though I know it is going to be met with resistance....
Get out of the practice of carrying around large amounts of CNR in hopes that you might use the stuff some day. If you can't use it or don't have any specific plans for it, get rid of it, or don't gather it to start. Maybe sell it to someone who can use it, sell it to the pawns or just toss it in the trash. I think a lot of crafters will get massive loads of CNR and then go and craft in a marathon session. For things that require non-stackable ingredients, this practice is generally self-limiting. For those who amass bags/boxes worth of gem dusts, I'm certain it can be done better/differently.
To give you all a perspective, my main character was at least level 12 before he bought into a house with 3 other characters. He's physically not very strong at all, and could never carry much in terms of CNR. And so he would craft in smaller batches, utilize his ox as needed, and if he ran out of room (or weight) he either used it or dumped it. So it can be done.

Maybe the DB change effected that. Now how many items in your inventory? :)

Stacked items only count as 1 item.

Players should try to target 300 or less items on their person.

Alright, Grohin got around 110 items, for .bic file size of about 170 kb.

Well I went through both of my main characters and thinned them out.

Beli started with 258 items at 268k file size to, 195 items and 236k file size.

Buddy did even better with a start of 280 items and 289k, to 123 items and 209k.

Beli was carrying around 3 bags of empty viles and flasks. Buddy had 5 decks of creature cards he got rid of. He doesn't even play the game any more.

How low can you go?

P.S: None of my characters has a place to store personal items. Outside of the bank chests that is. Beli is part of a guild so he can store his craft stuff, that's it.

Heh, the people posting probably aren't going to be the ones causing the problem.

I'll check when I am back home. Probably around 200-300 items per char from memory.

I took the trouble and optimized Fenrir's inventory as well. It was filled with quite a lot of things I decided I don't need with him at all times.

- Dropped off significant amounts of gathered items from various trips into the bank and guild chests. Due to this several containers were freed up and could be scrapped as well.

- Donated several stacks of scrolls I felt were not going to be useful on any quest.

- Gave up on the idea of picking up weapon crafting and therefore dumped all the molds I had gathered but hadn't used yet (ca 75).

- Dropped off duplicate charged items that a character is unlikely to run out of on any adventure.

All in all this is how I'll try and keep him as for the nearer future. I always thought I needed to optimize a bit, just never got to it, it's done now.

Character .bic file size 550kb -> 280kb.

I strongly advise everyone to find the 15 minutes it takes to optimize your inventory.

@sOulz, thank you very much. This is exactly the kind of action I had hoped this thread would bring. If we all do what you did we can reduce lag spikes.

Lag spikes can kill pcs folks. Death caused by a lag spike of an abused inventory can happen at any time, lets keep eachother safe, clean it up.

Personally, I try to avoid storing CNR that I'm not going to use up in crafting almost imediately after acquiring it, the exception being CNR I'm gathering for resale to others, in which case I still try to drop it off with the buyers within a day or two of completing a load/order.  I find this helps me to keep my inventory pretty sparse even on my characters at most times.

Okay well didn't count the items in my pack yet, but here are the bic weight

Fehriel: 253kb,
Rain:        352 kb (he probably needs a little clean up)
Eslar:     301 kb ( he is my gatherer strangely, and no possibility of storage space at all)
Brian:     28.0kb ( I don't know how this is possible but it is 28 kb)
Lex'or:   304 Kb (also probably need a bit of download, but I think I logged out with a newly batch of mined platty before having the time to go back home and set it in his crates)
Sil'via:    204 kb (with no possibility of storage space at all)

Can you explain to me how to get the local vault to work? I have gone into the game and exported the character, and then went to the local vault and had to save the file as a .txt. When I opened the file to see how many items I have in my inventory, there were random numbers, v's and 0's. Should I be saving the file as something else?

Once you save your character go into your NWN directory in Windows (OS) and open the localvault subfolder. There you'll find the .bic file named by your characters name and you can check its size.

We have some movement happening folks :) lets all jump in a try to reduce our bic file sizes.

have a base that you always try to get back to after a crafting session.
clean up items that you picked up during a hunt.
dont pick up all drop items! some you dont need or even want.
store food at home and carry only a few items (I need to do this one next)
 only two water skins

I got rid of a few things today that I never use, and used up all the crafting stuff I had lingering too.  Cleaning up after yourself really is the best method.  I agree with Chongo, lets let our Team work on what's fun and interesting, like feats and spells and RP tools, and leave what we can manage ourselves up to us.

You have to manually count the items IG, unfortunately.

Ido is 228 Kb... and he's carrying a lotta stuff as far as I'm concerned.... no worries here then...

EDIT: ... I wonder what has him up in the 220's.... maybe it's the small stash of Barley I haven't had time t craft? I'll do that next time I log on.....

Tod was at 507 Kb yesterday, and I got it down to 485 Kb. This is actually pretty difficult since I have him carry so many items such as rings, cloaks, boots and hoods that do different things since the only items he's restricted to is the level requirements and how big the weapons are. I'm trying though!Getting more chests in his room to store clothing and things he gathers so hopefully it'll drop some more.

I was amazed to find Bjorn in the 313 kb range with a box of breads, a box of roasts and a box of pies on him.  (Bjorn's lunchbox is legendary)  I did finally throw out that huge box of rotting trout fillets aged some 6 years ago and stuffed Willy's room full of the 80 or so random spider venoms I'd been pack-ratting for him.  Don't be surprised if the well near the Prantz barracks suddenly starts tasting a little tangy, like bastard spider.

The fun thing about foodcrafting is that it's the one craft one can readily share with the populace without muling being a factor.  So his inventory's been trickling down into the bellies of everybody else around him getting random massive sandwiches and pie lobbed at them.  If you would like to assist in the streamlining effort, seek out Bjorn's Baked Goods and Annie & Earl's Prunillite beer stashes.  And toss me those random berries, hops, sage & empty bottles and we'll picnic our way to lesser lag! :D

Not sure how, but Keppli carries lots of pipeweed, booze, and a stuffed bag of various foods(i.e. a couple of roasts, pies, fish and about five loaves...:))... along with lots of random trinkets in her large pocketses but only has around 100 pounds of stuff which is pretty lucky as thats about her limit of weight ;)
Might be because she doesn't do a whole lot of crafting, just wanders about the place!

@Kenderfriend It is not the weight but the amount of items that can cause lag. Check your .bic file size that will let you know if you are in the zone of creating risk for others when you log on.

Vrebel started out at 327 bick size and I was able to get him down to 299.  He had to sell a bunch of feathers, molds and other odds and ends.  After the 29th of April, when I can free up my storage chests from a hord of coal, I will be able to reduce that number considerably.

Soon I will be lean and mean.

Tralek went from 357kb to 304kb.  I still carry quite a bit for alchemy, like dusts, aloe, ginseng, etc.  I try to keep as much in storage as possible.  My number is still higher than I expected, but appears to be with in reason.

With the new way you can put boxes in chests it is easy to drop off your crafting stuff before logging and then pick it back up after you log back in later.

Emie's is at 358.
