Well my PC ive played on forever died last year. I got a new PC w/ Windows 7 but its onboard graphics were no good... so I used my nvidia graphics card from my old PC.
Today I installed all the NWN and Layo stuff. Once I got in game I noticed my characters looked all silver (like the silver surfer) ... **See attached pic* Now if it were just my characters I could maybe just deal with it... but other caracters with newer clothing choices also look like liquid silver in those areas.
I managed to catch Dorg in game and he reccomended reinstalling all the haks...which I did... then I was advised later to get latest drivers for my graphics card.... which I did.
Sadly I am still having this issue. Any ideas?
-
You may want to revert to an older graphic driver.. I know sounds odd eh? But the newer drivers have always given me problems with NWN, especially from Nvidia.
-
Really? But I had this issue before I even updated the driver.
*edit* Why are only some of the newer clothing choices affected if it were a graphics issue?
-
Well when I purchased a new Nvdia card last year I had that same problem. The char became silvery, the horses were like zebras, and the shadows were purple. I went to an older version of the drivers and it solved my problem. Granted I was on win Xp. But I suspect it to be the same problem. The driver you tried to install when you switched card might be newer than the one you were using on your old rig. Also, just out of curiosity, have you disabled the on board card in the bios?
-
Depending on the make of card, the driver that came with it might be too "new". What's the model?
-
EVGA 512-P2-N757-TR GeForce 8600 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
Purchased - Jan 2008
-
were you trying to install the same driver you had on your old rig, or did you download it before installing it?
-
When I added this graphics card to this new PC I do not recall what I did to get it working.... (what drivers I went and got, what disks I ran). At the time it played the games I was playing with no issues... EQ2 and LOTRO.
So I installed NWN today... all the Layo files and got into the world only to find my dark elf was all liquid silver... I went to Center and noticed the town crier had some articles of clothing that looked normal.. but his arms were liquid silver looking.
I went to my cards site, downloaded and installed its most current driver for my card. I came back into Layo.. no changes.
Thats where I am at now.
-
The issue there is likely "most current driver".
Previously, when there was a texture issue to do with an nVidia card, the corresponding Omega driver fixed it: Omega Drivers (http://www.omegadrivers.net/).
Otherwise, I would recommend rolling back to driver version 169.13, which folks on the BioBoards suggest worked with an 8800.
Good luck!
-
Tried the omega driver.... still silver clothing on the newer clothing appearances. Also now the entire screen flashes and flickers... I'll be putting it back the way it was.
What file are the new clothing models and colors in? Seems to me that file is my issue.

If this is a driver issue, you'll have to try some older nvidia or omega drivers. See what works for you.
I wonder if it's a driver issue though. Seems more like haks aren't loaded properly.
I would just try one thing at a time, including emptying your override folder and redownloading the haks.
-
Also, the drivers you can download from EVGA's site differ a bit from the original Nvidia drivers, that Nvidia offers from their own site.
Here's the driver for 32-bit Win7 (newest from Nvidia) (http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/win7-winvista-32bit-260.99-whql-driver-uk.html)
And here's the driver for 64-bit Win7 (newest from Nvidia) (http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/win7-winvista-64bit-260.99-whql-driver-uk.html)
I also have had the same kind of problems when I still used a 8000-series Nvidia's graphics card, but the problem was dated to a certain period of driver development. And since the card is not "top notch", I suspect the driver EVGA supplies is still one of that period's drivers.
-
I just cant buy that this is a graphics issue.
Here are some of the new problems I see.
1. If I dont open NWN as "administrator" it crashes and it even crashes sometimes as admin. **not a huge issue others say they have to run NWN as admin with windows7
2. Enzo has a bag in his inventory that if I open it I crash every time. I cant remember what is in it. I think it has some banners and stuff in it. Which would maybe explain my theory that im missing a .hak file. BTW I redownloaded and installed every .hak listed in the dowload section and that didnt help... so Im lost on what file(s) im missing.
3. one of my characers (Dot) her hotkeys wont save. Everytime I log out and in after setting them up they are wipped out. Ive rested and everything... it doesnt seem to help.
4. Everyone who has newer armor apppearances looks like they are coated in liquid metal.
Why I think its a missing file is because it reminds me of when I saved a LAYO character to NWN and then tried to play them in the regular NWN game. Things in my inventory would have these similar white boxes, or look invisible.
So any ideas?
Here is what new appearance items look like in my inventory... these are all cloaks in the chest... they look like white boxes. http://forums.layonara.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=143136&limit=recent
Here is what every character looks like that has "newer" armor appearances. It makes them look like they are made of liquid metal, like the T-1000 from Terminator 2

Try moving the whole NWN folder to a different drive if you have it. And make sure that nwnmain.exe is flagged to be run as adminstrator.
-
Had a similar problem recently when I updated one PC from Vista to Win 7.
Eventually I had to re-install nwn and delete the desktop icon it creates. I had to ensure it ran in Administrator and I had to create a new shortcut from the launch file in the nwn folder.
Once I did all that and adjusted my graphics settings to a lower setting (despite having a new wizbang graphics card) it played up once or twice but then came good and I've had no problems since.
-
Another question is whether you installed NWN as administrator. I don't think it gives you a choice, but generally if you want an app to have access to everything it needs, installing it as administrator is a must.
You might be describing symptomology from two different issues, though - the liquid metal appearances does sound like a graphics card issue. Given how hotkeys are preserved, I suspect that one may be a permissions issue (the above administrator run/install suggestion), likewise the crashes.
-
Ive uninstalled and working on a re-install. I was not given an option to "run as administrator" but when I opened the disk and right clicked the setup file I chose... run as administrator. So we'll see how this goes.
-
Ok all disks re-installed....
I need to update to nwn v 1.69 right? does that need done 1st or does it matter?
-
Yep , yep
The Bioware critical rebuild file migth do the trick
Last post on This thread (http://forums.layonara.com/general-discussion/283776-patch-1-69-need-smarter-folks-than-me.html)

Ok... all NWN stuff uninstalled. All the left behind haks, tlk's etc deleted.
Complete re-install of all the NWN disks, updated to 1.69. Re-downloaded and installed the files from the download section.
All my characters that have "newer" colors to their armor look like liquid metal still. Also the items that are designed with said colors and styles either are invisible in my inventory or white boxes.
Im still convinced this is some kind of file issue. Because it is ONLY items with the newer colors and designs that are messed up.
-
Ok it wasnt Enzo, it was Dot who I crash each time I try and open the bag on page 1 of her inventory... that is still happening after this complete uninstall and reinstall.

Try These for Windows 7 (if you have 64-bit OS) (http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-64bit-275.33-whql-driver.html)
Or These for Windows 7 (if you have a normal 32-bit OS)
-
It does sound like an issue with privileges. When I switched to Windows 7, I just copied the NWN folder from my old hard disk and I could play it right away.
Not sure you have access to the hard disk of your old machine?
-
Wish i could have tried that but my old PCs Hard Disk died... thats why I got the new PC.
Anything that is "old" as in dyed clothing or item appearance in my inventory. I can see just fine, and it looks just fine. Its anything with what I call the "newer" dye color or inventory item appearance that looks silver on a person and looks invisible or a white block in my inventory.
That is why I still think its a file issue.. but how can it be when everyone else downloades the same files I just did yesterday and they have no issue.
I guess I give up.

This seems to have insalled some nvidia control panel to my PC. Though it hasnt changed the issue of silver coated clothing when its a "newer dye" nor the white and invisible items in my inventory. :( I looked all thru the settings of this Nvidia control panel but I dont see anthing that will help.
-
IN the control center for nvidia, you can set the graphic settings for each program independently. Select NWN in the list, then set it so that it is set by the game, not overwritten or enhanced by the control center.
-
I am not seeing where to do this in the nvidia control panel HB. Can you tell me where I should be looking?
-
I will have to get back home and I'll post a few pics about where you can find this.
-
I see some settings in the manage 3D settings section and it lets me search for games/programs. In the list I see
Neverwinte rNights (nwn.exe)
Neverwinter Nights (nwmain.exe)
Then it gives me the buttons to add remove or restore (looks like I can only click the add button). I jsut dont know where to add something... if I am supposed to.
Anyway.... stopping to watch Womens World Cup Final... GO USA!! :)
.
-
yes that would be where you need to go. You need to select (click) on the nwn.exe that it gives you, then you should be able to change the setting in the window below it.
-
Isn't nwn.exe the launch menu? Think it's nwnmain.exe that is launching the actual game.
-
Ive set as many settings as I could find back to application controlled. But my issue remains. So I set everything back to restore to default, still same issue.
-
Dots issue of the crash when opening a specific bag has been addressed. (Thank you Redeemer) The design of a warhammer was the culprit. Even Redeemer said it acted as if it was trying to crash his machine when he looked at the item.
Still having the liquid metal appearance on any armor that has newer dye color. It goes beyond clothing... because Dot's hair looks liquid silver to me... also my dark elf... all the skin on his body looks like liquid metal. Because when he was created I must have chosen one of those same "newer" colors from the pallete.
At this point the game is indeed playable... but certainly odd seeing myself and so many other people with liquid metal parts to their armor or skin.
.
-
I'd suggest trying out a few different drivers for your card, then - the liquid silver effect is something I saw on one of my cards when I had a particular driver installed. It has to do with how the new textures work.
-
Ive found an archive of older drivers. I will work on that.
-
You could also try this, no idea if it will do anything... But a try is a try *shrugs*
Go to where you installed NWN at, then go back one step through the directory tree (like: "\\games\\" if you installed NWN to "\\games\\nwn"), select the appropriate NWN folder of yours, click with the left right mouse button on it (left button of course, if you're left handed and have your mouse set so), click Properties, select the "Security" tab from the top, go to "Added Properties" or whatever the button is called below the list of Rights, go to "Owner" bar on the top, click the only selectable option "Change", then "Other Users or Groups", then "Added Properties", on the right side of the you should see "Search" (click on it), select the log in name you use to log in to your Windows (likely the fifth name on the list, after Event Log Readers user), click OK, click OK at the previous menu where you can see your name chosen, check the box below "Added Properties" that says "replace ownership of content and objects", click OK.
There should be a brief moment when Windows changes the ownerships, then a pop up window that says "If you have changed the ownership of this object, you should close it's Properties Bar", click OK on it, your username should now have a check or "V" symbol on the Full Rights checkbox at the "Security"-menu. if not, click "Change"-button that is between the two scroll-boxes, click your username, and check the Full Rights checkbox on Allow, click OK, and click OK.
Now go back to Properties of NWN, uncheck the Read Only checkbox, and click Apply or OK, this won't change the properties of your \\games\\nwn\\ folder itself, but it should change the properties of the files and folders Inside \\games\\nwn\\ to more suitable ones.
Didn't hurt for me to do this change, so I doubt it hurts your installation either. No idea at all if it will help, but a try is a try.
PS. I have long thought there might be an "Obscurity" tab/menu somewhere in Windows 7, but I have yet to find it (har har)
-
It's the "Security" tab on US/English versions of Windows.
-
Kinda difficult to follow but im about 85% sure I completed these instructions. My issue remains. anything colored with "newer" color appears to me as liquid silver.
At this point I am hesitant to mess around with older drivers for my vid card... in getting this issue with NWN resolved I dont want to create issues with other games, and apps.... which I have no issues now. :)
-
Well this is what you could do. YOu could create a partition (http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/diskdirector/?source=us_googleADDH_n&ad=add+not+branded&k=partition%20magic&gclid=CIe50a2mj6oCFcFo4AodMmg3wQ) on your hardrive and install your OS twice. Doing this would allow you to have one partition with older driver, while the other with the new driver. This way when you are in the mood for NWN you could boot your computer with the partition that is for nwn (old drivers).
-
Switching between drivers is just as easy as booting another copy of the OS - at most, it requires a restart.
-
Some (http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_32bit_197.45_whql.html) older drivers you could try for Win7 32-bit OS, the version is 197.45, dated April 11, 2010.
Same for Windows 7 64-bit (http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_64bit_197.45_whql.html)
-

Yes but then it's a constant uninstall install new driver, reboot, play... uninstall, install old driver reboot.. play. Each time he will want to play nwn or an other game when he plaid the others maybe minutes before. My way at least is fix, one time only. Just need to reboot the computer and voila.
-
Ok, the issue of certain weapon designs has just come back. The Melee vendor is selling something that is causing me to crash everytime I acces his wepons for sale. Normally not a big deal since those are like starter items right? Well I am trying to do the Helm of Armor II quest. Which requires me to restock the weapons locker at Haven.
So basically I can not do this quest untill this issue is resolved.
I have begun installing older drivers for my graphics card... so far no change. Anyone who has a newer clothing dye color that clothing looks like liquid metal. Also the "newer" goblins their bodies look like liquid metal. And as stated above some weapon designs are causing me to crash when they show up on my screen.
-
I don't know if this has been asked yet or not, but have you (in no particular order):
1) Tried to re-download and/or re-extract the HAK files (deleting any previous HAK files before re-extracting them)
2) Removed anything and everything in your \\override sub-folder
3) Made sure your user account has full read-write permissions to the NWN folder and all subfolders
4) Tried using lower-resolution textures
5) Tried the 169.13 video driver
6) Uninstall NWN, log out, log back in as the Administrator account (you may need to enable it and set a password to do this) and reinstall NWN, extract fresh HAKs, etc.
7) Tried the critical rebuild patch
There may be a compound problem at work, because honestly, the color thing sounds like an NWN issue, if the older video driver doesn't solve the problem, that is. Layonara did not produce those colors. They are part of an update from Bioware, so there's nothing we could really fix there. The item model might be a HAK, or it may be something else, but if it's a HAK, trying to delete and re-extract (and maybe re-download) the HAK files might help. It might also be tied to driver issues. It's sadly impossible to tell from this side of things. The Goblin thing is also probably due to colors, as I know I've assigned a few goblins to have some of those extended colors on their skins. Tough to tell though.
Just as a note, and you're probably aware but it's worth mentioning, there's not a lot we can do on the development end to fix this, especially since we have no solid information as to what part it might be and more importantly, no one else is able to reproduce the problem. If we can't do that, we won't know if it's fixed, and most likely, we'd just be treating the symptoms, not the problem.
Besides what I asked above, I can only suggest that you be absolutely certain of your steps. For example, when you downgrade a video driver, reboot and then check that the version number matches what you think it should be.
Good luck!

This administrator thing doesnt make much sense. I am the sole user on this computer. So how can I not be the administrator?
-
You are -an- administrator, not THE administrator. As counter-intuitive as it may sound, there's a difference.
For Windows 7 and Vista....
Click open the Start menu, find Computer in the right half of the menu, right-click it and select Manage. You may have to agree to something at this point. Do so.
When the window opens up, there's a tree view on the left and a bigger section in the right. On the left, you should see an item that says "Local Users and Groups". Expand this. Below that you will have "Users" and "Groups". Click on "Users".
On the right-hand side, you should see a list of users, and up at/near the top of that list should be one called "Administrator". If you look closely, you'll see it may have a little circle with an arrow pointing down overlaid on the little user icon. If you see this, the user account is disabled (this is the default for new Windows installations).
Right-click the Administrator user and select "Properties". UN-check "Account is disabled" and click OK.
Right-click the Administrator user again and select "Set Password". Click Proceed when it warns you of bad things. Type in a password you'll remember in both blanks and click OK.
With that done, you can now log in as the Administrator.
Happy hunting.
-
I opened the start window... I find Computer (over on the right) I right click and choose manage (no permission pop up).
The window that comes up I DO NOT see a choice of Local Users and Groups
I see
System Tools
Task Scheduler
Event Viewer
Sharad Folders
Performances
Device Manager
Storage
Disk Management
Services and Applications
Services
WMI Control
I checked all those sub catagories and cant find Local Users and Groups
-
Look to the column to the left - under Computer Management (Local) you will see a tree that includes Local Users and Groups or at least mine does
-
I can not find that tab either, so my guess is that it's only found in Windows 7 Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate
(Mine is Home Premium)
-
Ah OK, well if it's Home Premium, you need to do this:
Enable the (Hidden) Administrator Account on Windows 7 or Vista - How-To Geek (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/enable-the-hidden-administrator-account-on-windows-vista/)
Keep in mind, this whole thing with the Administrator account is only to eliminate possible problems. It may not matter for your particular issue. Proceed with caution.
-
OK well here is an idea from left field. My wifes PC has a copy of NWN on it... it worked fine no silver clothing issues etc. But... it was too laggy her graphics card and or processer just werent good enough. So I figured what the heck copy that whole NWN folder and put it on my PC & i just moved my NWN folder to teh desktop for now. So I did.......
BYE BYE silver coated people!!! It worked!!!!!
*haoppy dance*
.
-
Cool. Sounds like you just had a bad install then. Glad you got it worked out.
-
Thanks... and two bad installs apparently! LOL
Sorry if I was comming across like I expected the Layo Staff to drop everything and attend to my issue. I realise y'all are workin for free here. It was just a ratehr frustrating thing to deal with over here.
Anyway see y'all in game...
and now ya wont look like the T-1000 ! :)
.
-
Wow! Glad to hear you got it working!
