You cant be innately good at everything. Kinda like real life.. Sure you could be strong and make a good miner and smelter. But you lack the technique for making molds. But you can practice... practice untill your tired of clicking. If anyone's parents made them take piano lessons you know what I mean.

I dont know if having higher strength helps you dig better. Even though i like to think so cause im supersticious. But i do think that the higher your strength the less often you break your shovel.

actually i think there is some kinda of script that tailor makes areas to suits your levels, so if you bring more people or higher levels, the monsters will be more numerous or spawn with scrolls to use against you ect.
